How about very high pressure steam which includes degreaser and deicer sprayed in front of the wheels when slippage is detected. This should clear the rails of most contaminants for several hours assisting the following trains and deal with ice and snow as well.

Liz is so beautiful that it's hard to concentrate on the subject at hand the moment that she appears on camera.

My thoughts exactly! I liked seeing her as much or more than the interesting content of a one of her shows about wildlife in India.

Yes, let the piss taking stop! train drivers can cope with this and do a great job keeping everything safe, but yes there will be a few mins delay here and there!

The reason it's still a joke is because we have one of the most untimely and worst kept rail systems in the world along with ironically being one of the oldest yet we still can't manage what are silly basic things which makes them a joke. Leaves were there last year, they'll be there next year, it shouldnt be too surprising

It is far from one of the most untimely and worst kept rail systems in the world . If you have ever been to S.America, Africa, Asia or Arab countries then you would see how good ours is in comparison. The British ones are pretty bad compared to Western countries though, so in that sense you are right.

***** Quite right, I should've amended t to the western world. But hey at least on those trains you can always escape the crowding and get on the roof :).

Why not spray the wheels with some liquid rubber as a coating, Once the leaves have gone away ( Next day) the rubber would wear away pretty quickly. Another tough coating would be silicone spray, which repels dampness anyway. Might give a much quieter ride too, outside each station have spray guns with huge tanks of rubber or silicone , that are tautomatically riggered as the train rolls out ...when the train leaves (excuse the pun) the stop it automatically gets a coating of spray, At the next station stop process is repeated, Only needed in the Fall. why would something like this not work. Let's face it they are mean and do not want any extra expense it costs THEM nothing to have trains delayed, it isn't in their interest to solve the problem.

we have a train called Rail Head Treatment Train (RHTT) which sprays water at high speed
@beachfrontal

***** would I be right to ssume you meant " at high PRESSURE "not a 125 train used to apply the water right.

Problem with that is the rubber would get caught in the wheel arches and breaks, or if one side failed it could potentially cause a massive crash.

would it help if trains have ABS?
@neilmcmahon
@neilmcmahon 10 лет назад
ABS only allows the change the direction of steered wheels without them losing traction. ABS does not stop a car quicker. On a slippy surface the braked wheels would just not lock and would continue to roll to a stop much farhter on
@AngusDuncan

They do, ABS came from the railways. It's called Wheelslip Protection (WSP) and most modern trains are fitted with it, although there's a number of strategies that drivers can use that are just as (if not more) effective at preventing lock-ups and slides.

Can someone help write out the very first line of her statement. Research has shown that ........ ........ leaves are actually sucked under the train

soggy, slippy
@jayrap94

but wouldn't a modern train have abs like a modern car? sure it would still be a longer stopping distance but not quite as long as a lock up like that right?

TheCamshafter ah ok - I just googled "do trains have anti lock brakes) just before I read your reply to which the answer seems to be no. Hmm, I guess I'll be looking out for lock-ups next time I need to use a train ;)
@mole259

Technically trains have a similar system, it's called WSP wheel slide protection, which helps to avoid wheel locking and ultimately severe wheel and rail damage but ultimately as mentioned it's steel on steel not tyre on tarmac

Don't trains have a sander?
