This week we sail from Cooktown to Lizard Island, a short passage of 55nm. Our first upwind passage since fixing the boat though and I'm interested to see if the repaired Daggerboard will hold. We had 20-25kts all day and multiple squalls rolling through with ferocious downpours of rains each time. A huge female Humpback whale came from no-where and breached very close by, exciting for sure but a little sketchy too!
We had a couple of days "holiday" at Lizard Island and thoroughly enjoyed it there. What a magnificent tropical paradise!
Thanks for watching.

Always excellent actual sailing video with explanation of sailing tactics. I have seen dozens of those giant clam shells in Yap and Palau in the 60's but never alive. That blue color is truly vivid. Thanks!

Top video and Lizard Island looks incredible. I never made it that far north on my travels in Oz but I'm adding this one to the list. The colour of the water and the coral / blue clam was incredible. And that whale! Wow, that was super close.

Apparently Cook saw so many lizards he called the island this but I only ever saw this single lizard.

It was amazing! We had seen any whales that day but the mum and baby popped up right in front of us and we were doing 10kts so it ended up quite close and I sort of knew she would breach. I was ready with my camera.

Sick one Vernon! Loved this vid mate, we have been doing a few windward passages of late so it was nice to see you doing the same. Keen to see next weeks vid and your shot, sounds unreal. Yew!

Cheers bud. Gentlemen only sail downwind, as in, lazy buggers with no sense of adventure. Mate, you'll be blown away, this photo I got is one of my best.

Vern.. in 2017 we moored in the exact same spot at lizard Island. Stayed for a week and swam in for a beer at the bar most nights… We left and the next day the guy on the boat next to us was hit by a salt water crocodile 🐊

Wow thats pretty scary! I was wondering if there were any crocs around. Must be very seldom though that one shows up as the resort were bring guests around a few times per day to snorkel there.

The beautiful YELLOW flowers are on the KAPOC plant...which provides a FLOATATION material. BTDT with fellow catamarans. Mrs. Watson Bay is a delightful anchorage. See that you have ALAN LUCAS book...cruising the coral sea. Great resources. Check out the Lizard Island Research Station before you leave. And the CLAM GARDENS in Mrs. Watson's Bay..And the MARLIN BAR...just for yachties.

One of your finest short productions Vernon! If I may ask, at 00:55 how do you get your background to be out of focus? Your camera work and editing are awesome. Love the way you speed up some clips before the frame of interest. Thank you!

Thanks, yeah it was one of the shortest vids in a while. I sort of wanted to do this length but they always end up longer, maybe I need to be more brutal on the edit. The shallow depth of field is coming from shooting at f2.8 with a high quality lens. You cant get this look from a go pro, point and shoot etc. iPhones do a pretty good job with it these days but its mostly achieved with software tricks.

How strong are those giant clams, do they have anything inside them and how fast do there shells move?
@SailingLearningByDoing
@SailingLearningByDoing 10 месяцев назад
Hi Robert. Those clams are so beautiful, each one a different colour. The really huge one dont really move much but the smaller and mid size one will close completely if threatened. If your hand was stuck in between there is zero change you'd get it out, crazy strong.

@@SailingLearningByDoing That's supper interesting. Great footage of it. When I get my boat is when my adventure will start and be able to see those things. It's actually quite dangerous to swim with sea lions. I would avoid that in the future. That's what I've heard anyways. I used to go spear fishing all the time and this one time I had a fish in my bag that was tied to me and a sea lion tried to get it. I saw those teeth, the speed and agility of a sea lion and thought it was going to grab my leg trying to get the fish. I tried to dump my bag but I had tied it solid to me and couldn't get it off fast enough. Next time I used a tender to put my fish in.
