Although my blog is currently on hold, I thought I would share some super helpful and important tips for your adventure to Juan de Fuca provincial park and Port Renfrew!
The most important piece of information that is left out of the vlog is that the surf breaks at Sombrio beach are not beginner friendly. It is a more advanced break onto a rocky shore (surf booties are definitely a necessity here!) and there are no surf shops or rental stores located in the general vicinity. Further south (closer to Victoria) there is a more mellow break popular with longboarders out at Jordan River. Here, there is a surf shop (seekandsurf.com/) but they do not offer rentals. If you don’t have your own equipment and you’re starting your adventure in Vic, the only spot in town that offers surfboard rentals is Sports Rent. They have a great variety of sizes in boards and suits, however their prices are much steeper than what you’ll find in Tofino and Ucluelet (sportsrentbc.com/rentals/surf...
Camping at Sombrio beach is beautiful! There are two different campgrounds east and we and they are all self registered, first come, first serve campsites. There are bear caches to keep all your smellies safe and wooden platforms to keep your tent from washing away to sea while you sleep. The hike out to the campgrounds is not long but it is definitely tedious and super muddy so make sure you come prepared for that! The parking lot and campground are also popular spots for thieves so make sure you keep your valuables safe.
Another important piece of information is that there is no cell service in the Juan de Fuca or Port Renfrew areas so make sure to do all your research and planning before hand (like checking the tides so you can plan your hikes and surf sessions!)
For more detailed information check out some of these other blogs from the experts and happy exploring!!
