Long Range 101 Part 86 - How to Select the Best LASER Rangefinder

To make a long story short - when choosing a LASER rangefinder, get twice as much as you think you will ever need, because these things are imperfect at best. To reduce your stress and anxiety levels in the field, just buy a Vectronix Terrapin and be done with it.

Thanks for another great video Rex. Just wanted to add that Vectronix discontinued the Terrapin as of the first of the year. You have to go with the PLRF10, which unfortunately is about $1500 more! So if anyone finds a Terrapin somewhere, buy it! I just got the PLRF10 and it's a great range finder, but a lot of money.

Yeah, since this video came out there have been some great newcomers in the market: amongst which are the Sig kilo lines 2200mr, 2400abs. I hear nothing but great things.

Awesome thanks Rex, for my applications I'm going to look at the Newcon. I'm mostly deer and Elk and I think it should more than cover my needs for that when I have to take a shot requiring an actual firing solution. Keep em coming and thanks again for this series it has been nothing short of amazing!

Excellent! This is very helpful for those of us who have been putting off getting the "real deal" long range range finder. The Terrapin seems like an excellent value.

hey Rex welcome back and thanks again for the videos. I was wondering on the terrapin if you saw the post on Snipers Hide talking about the emission of laser light into the viewers eyeball.

I bought the Leupold RX800i TBR a few months ago. Not much of anyplace around here I can get out beyond 150 yards, and this works well for me. Good info in the video, and nice to see a Leupold on your list. :)

Staggering what 4 years does. Nikon 4000 Black is now $400. Solid to 2500 in decent conditions. That's about 2.5x as far as I can shoot! :) :)

Love my Bushnell ARC 1 Mile LRF. Great for big game hunting. I can range deer to1,200 meters/yards. I set mine to read in mils to match my Bushnell 3.5 - 21 X 50 ERS scope's Horus H 59 reticle.

My how four years makes a difference.. The Vectronix Terrapin PLRF is accurate from 2000 to 4000 yards and cost a WHOPPIING $2200 back when this video was made in 2014... Fast forward to Spring 2018 and the gyro stabilized Nikon Monarch 3000 is accurate to 3000 yards and retails for $419 US. That is an 1800 dollar savings.

The models of the Vectronix that we used(4 different units) had a big problem fogging up when going from a pack into the hot desert sun. Just my personal experience.

Can you get a variable power eye piece with the reticle in it ir not & what power would be best for extreme long range shooting with reticle in it? Thanks for input in advance!

check the TruPulse line of range finders they dont need a reflective target out to 3800 feet with a reflective target is crazy far for less than the vextronics

Rex what about the Leica 1600B? Mine has worked quite well and would cover the majority of ranges that most shoot at (0-1400 yards), also less than half the price of a Terrapin

I totally agree. It's like our foreign policy is a policy of destabilization in that region. The whole idea of "arming moderate rebels today so we can bomb them tomorrow' is a failed policy. Cuba, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Isis...

Some of the comments mentioned that Terrapin is discontinued and some models are hard to find. That's all true. Other Vectronix are way too pricy. Any one here used G7 BR2 range finders? 2015 version is supposed to improved. How about other Truepulse product or Bushnell 1mile.

I am surprised how bad the Leupold did. I have a RX-IV that i used to use dismounted. When I compared it to my LRAS3 it seemed to be dead on out to about 1200.

Hey Rex, what are your thoughts on the Sig Kilo 2000? I bought one for 350. It says it ranges out to 3400 yards on reflective targets and a deer to 1200.. Where I live I don't have that range (3400) But I do plan on shooting 1000+... I have ranged it out to 800+ yards and it seems very accurate. I have to go somewhere to shoot and range longer. Just wondering your thoughts on it. For the money and the claims I couldn't pass it up.

25-06 deer hunting on wheat fields that are about 800 yards long and wide. I wouldn't shoot over 500 yards with my rifle and skill level. What range finder for that?

my Newcon LRM 1500 has a green battery in it. the web site says its 9V Lithium non-magnetic.... is it rechargeable ? can I use a Duracell ? are Duracell 9 volt batteries magnetic? if so how will it effect it ?

How long do these range finders typically last? I've had back luck with most consumer electronics from overseas; every digital camera I've ever had only lasted < 2 years. I'd hate to blow $650 on a range finder and have it die after a year or two.

How do you know so much about shooting long range? I only ask because I have yet to find a really good source for information on long range shooting. I research a lot but with that, I never find one consistently articulated source of information that always makes sense and gives logical information all the time, which also degrades that source's reputation. Most people who can suffice as that type of source are military trained snipers and so on, but that comes with the nature of not divulging techniques for whatever reason. So I'm just curious for reputability purposes, how do you know so much?
