When I was a young man back in the 70's, you just expected new music to be good. I listen to the radio today and I actually feel sorry for the kids that have to listen to what is, for the most part... well, lets be civil and just call it...vastly inferior.

b1bmsgt : It’s not just that it’s vastly inferior, though that certainly is true. There’s also the fact that the modern “artist” doesn’t possess a fraction of the talent of the original rock and pop artists of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. For example, back then, they possessed genuine musicianship and they had a wider understanding of the concept of what music is and how different chords, melodies and notes could fit together That’s rarely to be seen in contemporary times. Nowadays it’s nearly all computer generated, over sexualised and solely motivated by commerce. That’s not to say that there isn’t still a place for the 3 chord pop song. Yes there certainly is. But when you look at, for example, the Genesis song “Watcher of the Skies” from 1972 or “How Long” by Ace a few years later, you realise that the talent in these early twenty somethings is phenomenal. Where and when did it all go wrong?

It’s bland and has no dynamics , There is some good stuff today but you really have to search ,I don’t think it’s the kids fault but the industry’s fault , There is a ton of talented kids playing music but the industry is definitely broken

Whats wrong with dancing? Back in the day high schools used to have "dances". These "dances" would have what they used to call "live bands". Live bands were groups of people who played real musical instruments "live" in real time... No computers. No drum machines. No digital sequencers or quantizing beats. Just real musicians on stage jamming together in real time. All the kids would get on the floor in the gymnasium and shake their asses. They were great ! Now schools have DJs who play computerized trap beats. Ever see anybody try to dance to a trap beat?

The Doobies were two different groups at different times of their existence. “Long Train Running” and “Black Water” represent the pre-Michael McDonald Doobies, while songs like “Takin’ It To The Streets” and “Minute by Minute” represent the Michael McDonald Doobies. Both are good, but are totally different styles. Michael McDonald brought a soulful “Steely Dan” vibe to their songs. After he left, the group returned to their earlier style. Personally, my favorite Doobie Brothers songs are “Neal’s Fandango” and “South City Midnight Lady.”

Hey Andy & Alex, The Doobie Brothers is an American rock band from San Jose, California. The group has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide. They have been active for nearly 50 years, with their greatest success in the 1970s. The group's current lineup consists of founding members Tom Johnston on guitars, vocals and Patrick Simmons on guitars, vocals, veteran member Michael McDonald on keyboards, vocals, longtime member John McFee on guitars, pedal steel, violin, backing vocals, and touring musicians including John Cowan on bass, vocals, Bill Payne on keyboards, Marc Russo on saxophones, Ed Toth on drums, and Marc Quiñones on percussion. From 1970 to 1975 it featured lead vocalist Johnston and a mainstream rock and roll sound with elements of folk, country and R&B. Johnston quit the group in 1975, and was replaced by Michael McDonald, whose interest in soul music changed the band's sound until it broke up in 1982. (...info via wikiedia...) Wow, I'm in my teens all over again! The Doobie Brothers, along with Three Dog Night and the Eagles, had some of the best vocals back then! I first heard them with their 2nd album. "Listen to the Music" and "Jesus Is Just Alright" off their 'Toulouse Street' album, released 1972, really caught my ear. "Long Train Runnin'" and "China Grove" off their 3rd album from '74 were chart makers . . . "Black Water" and "Another Park, Another Sunday" were 45's where the "B" side had another great radio hit (...usually the "A" side was the chart maker on 45's...) "Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While)" was their next chart hit from 1975 . . . their rendition of a Motown song. "Takin' It to the Streets" and "It Keeps You Runnin'" began the Michael McDonald years in 1976. "What a Fool Believes" and "Minute by Minute" were hits in 1977. All these songs listed played on the radio back then, and every one of them charted well on the top 40 list. I really loved the vocals and harmonies . . . so sweet and well placed vocals. I use to put on The Doobie Brothers Greatest Hits on and just enjoy! I must say being born in the late 50's was just about perfect timing for some of the most awesome music to ever hit your ears! Hendrix, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Zeppelin, Joplin, the Beatles and the Eagles . . . just to name a few outstanding. And, as always, thanks you for playing the entire song thru without any pausing . . . I really appreciate that!

For those that don’t know, steely Dan consisted of two people and they used the very best session players of the day off and driving engineers and session players crazy with how demanding an exact they were. They spent a huge amount of time in production to get just the right sounds so if you’re a fan of great production will love steely Dan. The musicality is absolutely top-notch the song writing is very good, it’s a mix of pop rock jazz and blues in a very unique way put on a pair of headphones and he will totally get lost in the sauce :-)

They were a staple in our music diet in the 70s. Such a tight band. Skunk Baxter 's guitar is unbelievable. Lot's more music just like this if you wanna hear it. "China Grove," "Listen to the Music," "Black Water," and more. You can't talk "Classic Rock" music, without mentioning The Doobies.

They probably don't want to pay the initiation fee. It is an absolute travesty. How can it be a HOF without at least giving people an exhibit to watch Grand Funk do Inside Looking Out live in 1969? One of the greatest live rock performances ever and the HOF doesn't have it? Really? If they did nothing else but that video they should still be in the HOF in my opinion. The Doobies and Uriah Heep are well deserving as well. "Stealin'" is a classic.

What was nice about the 70s was that there was less interference from the record companies with regard to marketing and trends. As a result bands had more freedom to improvise. No other era demonstrates the the very-well incorporation of keyboards, harmonicas and brass sections like the 70s. Although I love and appreciate MTV (1980s), I think the focus of music began shifting from musical talent to imagery. My personal opinion is that very few musical acts today would even make it back then. I very much appreciate your channel for playing, reacting and commenting on this music. Thank you.

I’m pretty sure the musicians today would have faired well. It’s not all rap and pop. I’m 70 and still find great music in the current group of musicians. It’s like when they claimed Elvis wasn’t talented, it’s just the visual.

Here’s the thing with the Doobie brothers. They had two periods of music that had two different styles. So their earlier music was more classic rock oriented, but their later music was a bit more commercial, and pop oriented. Which means it’s hard to have a single defining song for them, as each period of music had different defining songs. BOTH periods are great... just different. It depends on your mood that day. 😘

You just HAVE to do a reaction to "Dark Eyed Cajun' Woman" from the same Doobie Brothers album, The Captain and Me. Some of the BEST blues guitar love song singing you will ever hear!
