Love the XC I bought one new in 98, except for the gas mileage, it was the best trail sled that I've ever owned!

Holy crap! Does this bring back memories! I had a 98 XC700 that I snow checked with the 220 cylinders, like @thepolarisguy said they had a little more power then the floor model 824 cylinders. Those carbs are stock 39mm keihins, and they work really well! Nice easy throttle pull 👍. If I remember stock jets were 185, I ran 182 or 180’s depending on weather. Considering the pipe the stock 185’s might be perfect! I’d stick with those carbs for sure.

I'm definitely interested in this build. Those 700 xc sleds are rockets.

I hope you guys rebuild and save this one. Kick ass sled! I've got a 99 XC 700 I've been tinkering with for a few years. Full SLP exhaust, boost bottle, gutted air box, jetted down a little (I'm close but it's got a bit of a flat spot in response down low), clutching is close, changed gearing, and I'm running one of those pre-studded tracks like winter tires. Little sled rips pretty good!

Really enjoy your channel. Had a 96 Ultra sks with slp pipes back in the 90's. Keep up the good work boys. "Just gonna clean the carbs".

Slowly tapping it with A small ball pin hammer and pine 2x3.5 board end cut to tap up against the handle lever. I think it would break loose. Another way is mini pencil torch.,or propane torch and spraying the penitrating oil and slightly tapping it until it releases and frees up again.

Those old XC 700s could rip. Not too many could top it.

The 98 XC 700' is well worth putting time into getting that machine going. I have a 97 XC 700 that I love. The 98 XC 700's had kind of weird shock package from the factory. They had white bodied Fox shocks up front, but hydraulic rear skid shocks for some odd reason. Someone opened up a catalog and ordered a boost bottle and pipe from Hot Seat. (Sorry, not a Hot To Go pipe). It could very well have a Hot Seat clutch kit in it too. The 38X Hot Seat Helix is supposed be the hot ticket for the XC 700's. They had two different cylinder setups in 97 and early 98, the 220's and the 824's. The 97's and snowchecked 98's had 220 cylinders and the straight production run 98's had 824 cylinders. The 220 cylinders are supposed to have a little more low end grunt but they were recalled because they would catch a ring and burn down the engine. So the 824 cylinders were installed after the recall. A Wilwood master cylinder and braided brake line from a Firecat is a nice brake upgrade for the old wedge chassis XC's. So far the old Ducati ignition is holding up well in my 97 XC 700, but I did buy a complete Kokusan setup to have on the shelf for a backup. I'm not sure if the timing marks on the crankcase and stator plate are the same between the Ducati and Kokusan units??? Hopefully when you can get into detail on that for us when the time comes. I look forward to seeing what you do with the old XC 700.

That’s xc is super cool. I have a 97 XCR 440 that has a lightweight hood. Can’t wait to see how that hood turns out. I’ve Never seen another one. I also have a LRM piped 97XC 700 it’s a great runner and super fun sled. If at all possible Lonnie you should try and keep that 2 piece seat and tank.

Keihin 40mm D slide carbs. They are very sensitive on the fuel adjustment screws so make sure they are very clean. Check the water pump, kind of a pain to rebuild but the seal is still available. Non thermostat motor so be cautious on warm to not cold seize. Very fast sled, Lonnie is in for a treat. Im pretty knowledgeable on these sleds so if you have any questions on this machine feel free to ask. Happy to help

Those keihin pwk 39mm d-slides are renowned for egging out the float towers ,first thing I'd check when you get into them, you should be able to bush them if they are.

Such a good find. Pretty cool to see it has a htg pipe too. I think they called those carbs D slides if I remember right. I converted my 98 XCR 440 to a 600 big block years back after I blew up the 440 2 times...but I also got about 10k on it before the swap so I can't complain 😂
