Hank, my Dyson broke in the exact place. It was under warranty and I called about it. I'd bet it was a design flaw they fixed in the next iteration. They said that rather than have it fixed, they sent me a new canister. VOILA!

I have to disagree with the not built to last I also have two I pulled out of dumpster, I fixed a small problem like yours and use them like a shop vac. Yes they are mainly plastic but for two they where pulled from a dumpster and used regularly I am very impressed. Am I saying they are they best, no yet I’m happy with my free vacuums! I’d buy another but they won’t die five years strong!

Surely if built to last, Dyson would support them for longer than they do!! As someone who speaks to a Dyson employee, they want customers to 'upgrade' every few years like Apple products. Employees on the helpline are supposed to sell £2000 worth of products each month and if they don't, They are in trouble. They are certainly not built to last like a SEBO vacuum that is built to last and the company still support them over 20 years later. I'm afraid that every Dyson ive had broke. They are so damn flimsy, worse than a cheap toy! All that creaky thin plastic, No thanks.

I have two, one is about 10 years old and still going strong. The newer one for our other house is about 18 months old. I'm very happy with the Dyson. My sister had Rainbow and Kirby to use in house cleaning business, my mom had Eureka and Electrolux. I've had Hoover brand and personally I like the Dyson more.

akbychoice dyson is imo the best of bagless vacuums. I currently own a dc33 as well which I do like.

Between the DC41 and the DC25, the DC41 is a letdown for few reasons. Changed from steel to plastic wand, removed the foot pedal, and harder to access motor. The seal to the bin is by far the worst part about the DC41. The square shaped seal on the DC07, 14, 17, and 25 were much better than that. The DC33 was the first letdown because they switched to a plastic wand. Also the brushes on that machine looked worn out. If I engineered Dyson vacs, the first thing I would do is bring back the steel wand, use a brushless motor and improve bin seal.

I think the bottom part under the dust cup where the gouge is, is suppose to have a gasket seal..or at least I would design it as such
@hanksgarage_
@hanksgarage_ 7 лет назад
+Forgott3n Gaming I thought that at first too and even looked at the parts lists and diagrams. It does have a gasket there but it's already on. The plastic part is actually apart of the body unfortunately.
@akbychoice
@akbychoice 6 лет назад
The rubber seal is part of the upper canister its attached to the center black tube inside the clear section. That gouged part is without a doubt a problem.
@dbbridsuk6617
@dbbridsuk6617 2 года назад
A bit late to the party… but… You have a rubber seal missing… there should be a rubber seal where you pointed out the gouge! If that is replaced then the side seal in the bin will not squeak when you turn to the left

Robust? I just got on the Dyson train a year ago and recommend them for upright. Less dumb clogging and easier clearing. My first was a "Trashed"DC07. A friend said "Dyson's suck" So that bin release,dirt bin, and the whole handle/body are too thin and flimsy. The 07 release was actually black compressed fiberglass,and almost impossible to break. I get why they lightened to save money, but hire me to break it and give you the threashhold Dyson

Still looking for a old kirby diamond G4 (think that's it), only Kirby made that had a two stage motor, getting hard to find.

Kirby Diamond was a G7D I have one of those that I fixed up, has the 2 speed setting on the motor. Oddly I think its the only kirby to have that feature

the dust cup seal can be wiped with a wet paper towel or wipe and it may help :) but like you said it may be worn out

I wish I could find a video on why the main handle detaches... seems like it has a cause, but can’t figure it out

How did you replace those after market parts you said you fixed/replaced? My Dyson broke due to that part but you did not detail how to replace those 2 red plastic parts. I have the replacement parts as I ordered them on Amazon. I can't find a youtube video that specifically tells how to replace those?? Any help? Thank you!
@hanksgarage_
@hanksgarage_ 6 лет назад
Assuming you are talking about how to replace the ones on the bin you have to bend the plastic a little just enough to get it in. It’s tricky. For sure.
@nancykay3109
@nancykay3109 6 лет назад
We just figured out how to replace the red canister release clip, after spending an hour searching for the answer on the internet. On the sides of the red clip, about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom, are two small flexible tabs in the plastic that you can press in to make the tiny catches flush with the sides of the latch. To remove the old broken latch clip, press these two tabs inward while pushing the latch itself upward to get it out of the track on the canister lid (we had two people, with each of us pressing a tab in with opened paperclips -- not enough room to use fingers). To install the new latch, simply slide it down on the track on the canister lid, and it will snap into place.

I just found this machine free on a city wide cleanup. The cord was cut off and a note said it didn't work but it looked new. I replaced the cord and it runs great. The beater brush doesn't work so checking into the cost of a new beater switch. I bought my first Dyson Animal in 2006 and loved it. Pieces started breaking 2 weeks ago and started researching new machines, brands and models. Could you add a link where you bought the red piece to empty the bin? Thank you for the good info.

My mom used to have hoover convertible back wen we used to have carpit it the house lol but the thing work amazing
@hanksgarage_
@hanksgarage_ 7 лет назад
Yup, the convertible hoovers are indeed well made, Ive got one and have had a few I have found and restored. They are simple and parts are cheap. They are still around in a sense as sanitaire, bissell big green, and a few other random smaller companies keep producing new ones.

Never bought into the dyson hype. buy a used kirby, there built like a tank. there heavy..but proven. My kirby has real good suction, that lifts carpet of the floor in some areas. Never have liked bagless vacuums. Ive heard old royals are great too.
@hanksgarage_
@hanksgarage_ 7 лет назад
Yup I have a few kirbys and a royal 880 which is all metal, great machine, fan is all metal as well. Kirbys are easy to service and parts are everywhere, they can be had for Free all the way to a few hundred depending on condition. Easy to restore and get going
@BimboKay
@BimboKay 6 лет назад
YEARS ago, my mother had a Kirby. When she died and my sisters and I were clearing up her house, my youngest sister IMMEDIATELY ran for the diamond ring (I didn't care). When we opened a closet and saw the Kirby she said, "I took the diamond; here, you take the Kirby." Not a fair deal, but I wonder how many times she ever wore that ring!

Looks like junk to me! The very best new machines, IMHO is the Shark. Well made, great mobility and durable. AND less than half the price of the Dyson.

+Charlie Zellner sharks aren't bad. My dads got one my only issue with them is they are all bagless. Emptying the dust cups drives my allergies nuts

We’ve had 2 or 3 shark vacuums and 2 steam mops. None lasted more than a year. Bought a DC41 ($60, no tools) used from a person who cleaned houses and it still runs great 2 years later. Just got home from buying another DC41 that’s a year old with tools for $40!
