+Lierofox The mrrglll-warder, gilled Jesus, or mrglchief of the horde, which do you prefer? Also, the wife said the exact same thing in the theatre at the credits
I think the worst character was Orgrim. I really love Orgrim and I hate what they did to him in the movie. I the original story he was right hand of Blackhand and second in command of the Horde but he didn't trust Gul'dan and refused to drink the demon blood. Later, when Gul'dan was in a comma, he betrayed and killed Blackhand and took the mantle of Warchief of the Horde and conquered Stormwind, winning the first war. He was a hero for the Horde, he believed in honor, and he really cared for his people, unlike Gul'dan and Blackhand who only cared for power. But in the movie he was a traitor to Durotan and didn't do anything important. A complete waste of a great character.
So many good easter eggs too! -Summoning stone in elwynn -Blizzard logo at the v. beginning containing Arthas, Frostmourne & other(s) -Ironforge is *beautiful* -Khadgar riding his griffin into Stormwind flight path -Polymorph followed by "It only works on the simple minded, and it lasts for about a minute!" -Murloc -Harvest Golem in Westfall -the fight between lothar, khadgar and medivh/sargeras played out like a boss fight in the game (phases) -Khadgar 'dings' after defeating medivh (yellow glow after beating the fel corruption) -Most of the horde chieftains having cameos (Grom, Killrogg, Bladefist is whom I've spotted, and was that Drek'Thar getting captured with Garona and then dying?) -Rod of Atiesh is Medivhs staff -Moroes in Kharazan! -Boomstick named after The Highly Calibrated Boomstick in-game -Toby Kebbel who plays Durotan also played Antonidas and the wow loading screen music played in the end credits! fav movie of 2016, next up Assassins Creed!. #gamerlyfe
Dude, I'm full Alliance Paladin, and I'm fucking pissed that the city didn't burn as it should have! It's more fuel to the fire that they showed Stormwind as it was rebuilt, rather than show Stormwind as it was originally built with the flaws in the defense walls that the Horde gradually broke through, wall by sectional wall, finally leading up to the keep... -.- The current Stormwind set up is designed with the epic moat between two mountain ranges specifically for that reason... Never again will a huge army be able to "storm" Stormwind as it was originally done in lore... So for the movie to have shown it as it is now is just stupid because no Horde army will ever be able to penetrate that gate even with only half a legion of men defending it! It's too well designed from previous experiences... So if the Horde cannot burn Stormwind in movie lore, how the fuck does it make it past Elwind forest?! Bypassing Elwind entirely would just be stupid, as that would leave the Alliance with a "storm front" ;D from which to propel guerrilla warfare from as the Horde attempts to push northward towards Arathi via the Blackrock mountains and the Searing Gorge... It's just all around ridiculous!
Ignore the horde bait, I agree with Alex here and I'm also an Alliance player. Stormwind burning was a result of the King dying. It was also rebuilt by heavy taxes from Lordaeron after the second war ended which in the end resulted in some pretty meef'd peasants and the eventual rise of the Defias.
Whole Frostwolf clan on this side of the portal got slaughtered .. when humans arrive their corpes hangs in front of the camp. Orgrim let just Draka run away with little Goel, and in then end only he left.
I don't think they necessarily slaughtered all Frostwolves. Just the strongest warriors ("take the weak, kill the strong"), possibly the ones who went along with Durotan to the meeting in Blackrock pass.
Perhaps It would be too much, if Dalaran was located in the same zone (Hillsbrad Foothills) as Dunholde Keep, where Thrall is raised. It is around that place Thrall / Go'el was found in the end of the movie.
The only real Warcraft movie is a movie done with animations that blizzard shows in trailers. It would be breathtaking to see warcraft for what it is, not a real life movie, but a fantasy world. I guess I can only dream.
Nobbel87, Id like to thank you creating amazing content over the years. Your vids have brought back some incredibly good memories of wow and after trying to find a comprehensive, detailed explanation/story for the entire warcraft lore [was terribly unsuccesful], i found your vid explaining this and very well by the way. I look forward to more vids on warcrafft lore and all the tiny details that only us vets of wow will ever understand. thank you once again, much appreciated!
Yes thank you! I never played warcraft and MMO storytelling (especially earlier in the genre's development) is abysmal and your videos do a beautiful job at weaving everything together and orating it with your interested yet relaxed voice.
Zoroko "ignorant" Not sure you know the meaning of that word. The original lore is no more for a movie than what they did. It could have easily been used for the movie. The movie already skips a lot and the pacing is off.
Too much? Not necessarily, they didn't have to include all the lore bits, they could have skipped them, as long as there EXISTENCE was still part of that universe. But instead they skipped over (As in didn't happen, not witness), and completely changed numerous important story points. Its not about a story too much for a movie, it was about what was CHANGED.
I like to think of the movie as a retelling of a legend. The stories of legends change in the retelling until they become myth, but the important bits are always the same. Thank you for this video, I highly enjoy it as I do all of your videos.
Nobbel isn't Medivh still possessed by Sargeras in the movie? The scene where he says he can't remember what he's done and the form he takes makes it seem like it's sargeras taking over not just simple fel
Well the biggest hint was that khadgar tells lothar that they need to go kill a demon, and it really seem like khadgar removes the demon from medivh and not just some fel energy
Medivh looked more like Kil'Jaeden to me. And yea, it was Garona that mentioned Guldan learned from a demon, so maybe they just cut out Sageras for Kil'Jaeden. From what I can tell, all the changes were to shorten/simplify the story line; otherwise, it'd be a six hour movie. Personally, I wouldn't complain.
I'm actually curious, how they're going to make Orgrim the new Warchief of the Horde in the Sequel. 1. He's part of the Frostwolf Clan and not Blackrock, which already gives him a worse standing and he can't challenge Blackhand to Mak'Gora, since he's already dead.
My guess is he'll remind the horde of Durotan's challenge in which Gul'Dan dishonoured the horde. With Garonas influence, the horde will turn on Gul'Dan and kill him. But I think Orgrim will die here. Hopefully the rest of the movie before this point builds up Thrall to succeed Ogrim with the weapon. And perhaps either he will be warchief.
Whereareyouroam goodsire That's an option. But if he kills Gul'Dan, he will never create the death knights though they play a major part in the Lich King story. Well, we don't know, but they'll probably handle it in some way.
pretty much in movie canon orgrim is too cowardly to challenge gul'dan ironically. the bravest moment he had was saying mean things to gul'dan but that about it. i don't think he'll be the warchief in sequel.
Robin AH They can still do that. Movie by movie the story will continue to alter from the original game plot anyway, so I don't see how this is supposed to prevent anything major. Nevertheless I see your point.
Well.....yes and no.....I mean remember the scourge is supposed to invade Dalaran at some point later on in the story......so yea that's gonna get weird if it's flying already
+Andrew Sandstrom it's simply infuriating that we had WoD to already tell the story in an alternate setting. Then the film, which openly invites new players to WoW, tells the story in an alternate setting. So Blizzard has invited incredible amounts of ignorant players now to WoW to no fault of their own because they will start playing through WoD content and then be told that that is not how it originally played out either. I get so pissed even looking at this whole situation. It is such a cluster-fuck.

That's what I wanted too but I'm fine with it. You realize Warlords of Draenor did basically the same thing right? They re-write history all the time since Cata.
I feel that rather than trying to squeeze so much lore into the space of a few hours for each movie, it would have been better to make a warcraft episodic series, possibly with each season devoted to each of the three wars, allowing enough time to provide exposition and character development.
well yeah, but at least we get more content than a two/three hour movie with each season, and if blizzard itself produced it, then maybe (some hope) they'll re-invest it into other projects (a.k.a for the love of god, give us warcraft 4 already, its been a decade+)
I made a Top 3 Things I loved and hated video about what they changed. But overall I think people can become quite defensive about changes in the Lore and I fully understand that. After all, they've been growing up with this story, then it has another version in WoD and now in the Movie. Person can never know what to believe. Lucky there's Nobbel with his unlimited knowledge :D
Thank you for focusing on four differences in detail. By the way, your narration of the movie events is more thrilling than the scenes themselves, kudos.
Nerzhul communicated with his dead wife Rulkan. Kil'jaden posed as Rulkan and convinced Nerzhul that the Draenie was a threat. Thats why he united the clans and started to kill the Draenie.
Hey Nobbel, huge fan, any how can you please explain to me the Aoldi scene, wasn't he a male high elf? Shouldn't that have been aegwyn in that weird box in dalaran? I have many questions about this, being a female human I feel like that should have been medivh's mother
I wish I could, but details are vague. It's certain that the name of the being inside the box is Alodi, Alodi being the name of the first guardian in the main universe. The rest...up for interpretation. I have no idea why Alodi decided to go into a box, perhaps it was a reflection for the source of the guardian's power? Could explain the scars of fel magic in her eyes considering that a guardian before Medivh did some massive resource on the fel. Like I said, it's been kept vague.
thank you for the upload nobbel; by the way on top of what you have mentioned a major difference is that blackhand is killed by doomhammer, who in turn becomes warchief ; after the alliance is formed by lothar they raid blackrock mountain (horde main camp) . lothar is pushed into a fight against doomhammer and doomhammer actually kills lothar; it is strange that turalyon (lothar 2nd in command) is not mentioned in this movie, as turalyon finishes what lothar started and wins the battle / war..
That was interesting. Poor drenai. They are one of my favorite races. Medivh is an interesting character. I am glad they put him in the movie. I remmber his mother, even though she never apears.
Well, for me movie sucked ass. Because they potentially killed 2 strongest lore storylines: Arthas and Thrall. We wouldn't see scourge as Ner'Zhul wasn't punished by Kil'Jedan and became the Lich King, so no threat for Lordaeron and no one to fuck up Arthas. And Thrall never becomes warchief as Blackhand is dead and it is very unlikely for Ogrim to kill Gul'Dan and become Warchief, also no frostwolves left so no one will teach Thrall shamanism. Well, I was disappointed with lore changes. Also one lore change that made me mad: Khadgar not getting old. Him getting old was a way to show how powerful Khadgar was, as he managed to purge himself from fel with arcane magic and looking old is an effect of this.
everything ended with almost the same result so ofc theyll manage to bring arthas as the lich king, and with the same logic thrall will become warchief and a shaman too. Remember this movie just showed the same results but not the same ways of how it happened in the actual lore, i personally liked, but thats another story xD So yeah a warcraft movie "chain" without arthas isnt warcraft so youll see that theyll manage to get the lich king into the movie
They can still do all this stuff... Just as they did with this movie, they just make it easier for the audience to digest. They will probably just make frostmourne the cause of the scourge. And orgrim will have a great role in the influence of Thrall. I think that Thrall will discover his shamanistic roots by being connected to the doomhammer. If you notice the weapon wasn't given the spotlight it deserves. Maybe it is being saved for the moment thrall picks it up and 'awakens' it.
Ner'Zhul punishment isn't even happening at this time. It happens after the lost second war, when he tries to open more portals into different worlds in the search for power and then get's ripped to shreds leaving only his mind behind by Kil'jaeden after entering one of the mentioned portals. Also iirc he and his clan stayed behind on draenor.
Today, I literally was thinking "I wonder if I should ask Nobbel if he'd do a lore video about the differences between the Warcraft movie and the canon..." You sir, are amazing. The best Warcraft content creator ever. Bravo.
hey Nobbel, to me it seemed like they didnt really changed the lore of medivh having Sergaras spirit inside of him. When Medivh fights Lothar and Khadgar he turned into a demon and I feel like the woman that tells Khadgar about medievh is actually Medivh mother...also do you think Stormwind will not fall now seeing as they didnt do much to introduce Lordaeron and how they changed the death of the king
His mother wasn't too directly responsible for his downfall. She seeks council of King Llane and informs him, not Lothar or Khadgar, of his betrayal. Garona who has a "relationship" with Medivh also helps Lothar and Khadgar take him down. In addition, Medivh purposely surrounded himself with people that could/would stop him. While, yes, it's relatively the same, the stark difference dampens the story (for me anyway.). Especially since Garona is such a dynamic character that gains so much throughout that story arc, (love interest(s), family, etc) only to lose it all in the end because of Gul'dan and his dealings.
yeah I was disappointed, the actual fight against against medivh, khadgar rapidly aging... garona her significant other trying to kill him and Lothar his friend overcoming the pain of being burned alive just to deal the killing blow... dumbed down to a silly typical and unispired drop something on the bad guy straight out of loony toones scene...
Here's a big flaw I found in the movie: When they are defending the portal to let the humans get through, the orcs go behind the portal and start banging at it in frustration of not being able to get to them. Well in the game you can go in the back of the portal so that is just a huge flaw that really ruined the story for me so much.
One of the main things I noticed was Dalaran already being a floating city in the movie. In the games, it took much longer to move the city. I feel like they barely even touched on Dalaran in the movie. I think most things in the movie are only understood by fans like us. Which is great for us but it explain low critic review scores too.
Actually no. Nobel kinda copped out to make things seem similar when they really weren't. I mean stormwind is supposed to be destroyed but in the movie it's not even touched.
+yobigmac Stormwind is supposed to be destroyed after Llane's death. It's a bad way to end movie 1 and a perfect way to start movie 2. The movie just doesn't cover the whole first war (which nobody ever claimed it would). What do you think will all the orcs do next now that most of them got ported and the king's army is decimated?
I think he over emphasized some of the differences, especially the first one. All of that Legion backstory almost certainly happened in the movie, they just weren't able to show it. Of the whole first point the only real difference in Doomhammer and the single Draenei
While it saddens me a bit that the movie is so different from the game-lore, I understand why they did it. If they were to follow the original lore it would just take too long and would've fit in a movie (sort of like movies based on books, it would be awesome if they could keep everything but a book is simply too long to fit in a movie) That said, I actually liked the movie, seeing in-game places and stuff on the big screen was so cool! #NERDGASM
I would like to say that the lore of Warcraft is a perfect mirror of our own history. Tales are retold, details change, but the heart of the message stays the same. If the loremasters of the game take a moment and look at it from this perspective perhaps they will see the essence of story is sometimes more important than the details.
wait wait wait. Medivh is Garona's father in that book? ... Well that makes Medan even odder now doesn't it? I thought that opening scene with the dreanei asking Gul'dan to "let her child go" was an hint to her being half dreanei with the dreanei in the cage being Gerona's mother. ... I really hope they recon that Medivh being her father thing that makes ... so little sense. I mean the Dark Portal was not even open yet! How did Medivh get there!
Impossible to say if Medan becomes part of the movie universe. If he does, i'd imagine they go with Lothar as the father instead of Medivh. The novel has Garona and Lothar spending the night together
Except Garona's father is not Medivh nor is she half human. She's a result of Gul'dan's experimentation where he bred his male Orc warriors and Draenei females
Medan is almost 100% retconned, because his storyline was heavily disliked by everyone and his mere existence just makes everyone question the way the legion even exists right now, he is all but officially retconned, and hopefully it will be official soon (i say this because there is no mention of him anywhere outside the comics he turned up in)
I honestly love a lot of the change of the Warcraft movie in term of lore. The Durotan development was easily the best change that I believe should be canon.
Personally, I can think of a really good explanation of the changes between game and movie lore. The alternative timelines, explained on many occasions by bronze dragons both in novels (Twilight of the Aspects is most detailed concerning this specific issue) and in the game itself (Caverns of Time and, for sure, entire WoD expansion). Actually, I think now that it may be another reason, WoD was ever created (most of us agree it's a crappy expansion)... so that the idea of multiple timelines was fresh in fans' minds upon the movie's release, thus making all the lore changes more tollerable. And, as such, it is totally fine to have two different stories in game and on the big screen, as from the beginning they would be two alternative timelines. I'd even be happy if in some of the sequels, a bronze dragon (hands up for Chromie!) appeared and specifically confirmed it. It would be a really nice easter egg from Blizzard towards the players. Nicer even than murloc and polymorph, I think.
Blackhand was forced by Gul'dan and Orc Tradition to do ritual suicide because he fled the battle as commander. When he put his damaged hand in to the fel it started to eat it's way through his arm going for the rest of the body.
The most obvious change to me was that, in the movie, Dalaran was already floating up in the clouds, while in the actual canon, it only took flight after being rebuilt in WotLK, and the fact that Garona kills Wrynn out of her own free will instead of being possessed/mind controlled by Gul'dan. Also, if I remember correctly, Stormwind didn't have gryphons yet in the time period the movie takes place in. Humans only got access to gryphons when they allied with the Wildhammer dwarves during the Second War. Not that I'm complaining or anything, these changes were pretty minor and the movie was still enjoyable regardless, and sometimes things need to be altered slightly for the sake of adaptation.
Medivh and Khadgar in the game lore do have access to gryphons, and use them to go around to Stormwind and the Black Morass. Maybe those are all Kharazan gryphons. This is exposed in "The Last Guardian" by Jeff Grubb.
I'll be honest, some of the changes felt better in the movie so it's 50/50 yet the one i love more was how Garona kills the king. the original is summed up as 'Mind control' murder but the movie had more feeling behind it. The king wasn't just sitting around and knowing the fate, he did something that even Garona didn't want to do...but it worked in the end. But that's me.
Yes and interestingly enough, someone mentioned a difference between the written novel and audio version. Audio version describes Garona as the new warchief, novel does not. Makes sense if they want to go that route, have her take the roll of Doomhammer from main universe, try to lead the Horde down a more honorable path.
this guy is amazing, and i like his accent aswell, if you are reading this keep it up, your vids is the only thing still making me cling to everything warcraft related!
no fall of stormwind, that is a huge change that i dont like. They have do change things more and more so that there will be a lich king or a shamanistic thrall.
Rower Well the fall of stormwind could still happen in the next video, and the alliance that Lothat will make He did really not make a Alliance between the races in this one, nobbel was doing some drugs i think lol
I have played for so many years, not being interested in the lore but after i saw the movie i have been watching your videos, and they helped me understand the lore, thanks =)
Use your imagination, ppl. Just as one of the possibilities: some corrupt Kirin Tor mage drops the city from the sky and then everything happens as it was in the game. Or Archimonde destroys it when it's in the skies, because he uses magic to do it and doesn't give a fuck if it's floating or not.
Yeah, everything mentioned in the vid is exactly what I noticed most memorably from the movie, by no means is the movie terrible because of this and frankly each change was welcomed, the change of how Thrall being born was pretty cool and even the fight scene at the black gate was pretty badass with Blackhand.
thanku nobbel thought it was just me with changes it was sending me nuts ...explained it to so many half didn't understandas didn't play long enough ty massive hugs
Great video once again. I would love to see one about possible storylines for a sequel! Also, does the novel go deeper into the fate of the orcs still on Draenor? Given the spearhead on Azeroth consists most likely only out of their best warriors, around 3/4 of them(given the scene in the movie) in addition to their old ones and children are still left behind!
The biggest change to me was : In the movie they described Stormwind as the largest human kingdom that has helped all the others. Where in actual lore, Stormwind was the smallest and so far south that all other nations ignored their sister city. When Stormwind called for aid against the Horde, the rest of the Human nations ignored the plea. Also there was no "alliance" with dwarves or elves until after Stormwind is long destroyed. Only reason the elves joined the war effort at all was because Lothar is a descendant of the Arathi Bloodline. Dwarves and Gnomes did not come to the aid until unified Alliance broke the Horde siege of Iron Forge near the end of the 2nd War.
The whole time I was in the movie, I was thinking "When are they going to explain what other half is Garona? Will she hook up with Medivh in the next movie?" The fact he is her father is kind of an important thing to cut out... I hope we get a director's cut with all the content that was removed!
To start, I would like to say I thought the movie was amazing and well done. However, there were a couple of lore changes that you didn't mention that bugged me. The first major one was that Medivh and Khadgar didn't know each other when in the Last Guardian novel, Khagdar was Medivh's apprentice and he slowly learned that Medivh was not alone in his body. The other major lore change was Medivh rapidly ages Khadgar's body after their final showdown. Thanks for the video!
have not seen the movie yet but really enjoyed this ty and I am glad with the garona changes her not having all those curses on her from gul'dan cho'gull and sargaras makes her story for me way better
I enjoyed the movie, but was not pleased with the lore change. What really got me mad about the lore change was that Dalaran is floating up in the air before WC3.
Hey Nobbel! I'm a long time viewer & a 1st time commenter. SPOILER WARNING!!! I really enjoyed the movie & I even enjoyed the changes from the lore (although I would have loved to see Orgrim smash Blackhand's skull with Doomhammer & claim mantle of Warchief, but i digress). The one change that really got to me was the death of King Llane. Llane hoped to take a chance at peace by having Garona kill him & gain her honor among the Horde, but in doing so, survivors (i.e. Lothar) were able to tell the Alliance that Llane was betrayed by Garona & further intensify the hatred towards the Horde. I have long thought that the story of Warcraft is like a commentary on our world. We are different nations separated by culture, borders, and sometimes distrust. Sometimes we can come together to take on dangerous threats, but there are many things that further divide us. There have been plenty of examples of this in the Warcraft lore. Take the events at Wrath Gate: Horde & Alliance came together to take on the Lich King but a splinter group w/in the Forsaken killed Alliance & Horde alike. This event further increased the distrust between the 2 factions throughout the Northrend campaign & beyond. I loved how they were able to show that in the movie. In the hope of things getting better, they tend to get worse. The Warcraft story is kind of like a tragedy, but with just enough hope that the universe is not destroyed or devoid of good people. What are your thoughts on this? Did you like this change? Also if any other commenter pointed this out, I apologize. I did not read all the comments.
not many may have noticed this and i didnt notice this until i rewatched the movie several times. the scene where blackhand sacrifices his hand and when it begins to burn, you can see in the background to his left what appears to be a silhouette of mannoroth. watch it.
9:24 I had a good laugh at that scene. It's like "welp he was already basically Green Moses with how he was raised by the enemy but ultimately lead his people to the promised land of Durotar, but let's _really_ cement it."
>Be Thrall >Be mad at Garrosh >Challenge him to Mak'Gorah >Use magic >No one cares *switch to movie* >Be Gul'dan >Get challenged by Durotan >Use magic >Everyone hates you
I watched the movie with some guildies and we were discussing the lore changes. The biggest one we felt was the killing in King Llane and Stormwing not falling. Varian not being witness to an assassination wouldn't grow up with a hatred of the Orcs, without the fall of Stormwind there would be no Defias Brotherhood, Varian may never be kidnapped and become Lo'gosh (I think that's right). Dalaran being in the sky was another one for me, does that meant that it won't be in place for Archimonde to destroy it? And finally, there is no sign of Ner'zhul. That is arguably one of the most important parts in Warcraft lore, no Ner'zhul = no Lich King. The movie doesn't really make the presence of the Burning Legion felt at all really, it doesn't explain the fel other than its an evil form of magic that feeds off life, no major demonic presence there at all. That also means no Kil'Jaeden to turn Ner'Zhul into the Lich King meaning that whole invasion that we see in WC3 is gone entirely. Interested to see other peoples thoughts on these points.
The part where Gul'dan kills the deer to save Thrall was hilarious. I like how the director changed what was wrong in the trailer and made it even better.
Considering how many retcons the games have done since Warcraft-Orcs and Humans even this lore is somewhat dicey. Then consider all the retcons of WoD and it's kind of a wonder that they were able to make a sensible plot not involving Arthas at all. (I say that because that would have been the easiest story to adapt. Kudos to Duncan, who didn't fall for it. Glad he used to play, shudder to thing what kind of Bryan Singer trash we would have gotten otherwise.)
At last, a wise voice to clear out all the mess and confusion about the original wc1, wc2 manual lore, comic, novels, books and wow lore and movie new lore... thx so much Lore Master Nobbel :)
It would've been interesting if they had started with Warcraft 3 and adapted it faithfully, using the Third War as a device to fill in the lore from Warcraft 1 and 2.
I think the movie changes were worth it for it to meet the common world audience, the changes meant that the storyline was shorter and it left the common audience thinking that a second movie would be worth it. The original game lore, would have meant the movie would have been too short(siege of stormwind) and depressing or too long (black rock mountain) and very final. The orcs are still a threat which gives them more of a hold in the world and doesnt affect the overall storyline too much. Stuff like this means that the (awesome) director Duncan jones, can now slowly fix the alterations while expanding the universe into something awesome.
I'm pretty sure everyone noticed the massive age difference between movie Lothar and lore Lothar. That was the thing that stood out for me. By the time the movie comes around poor Anduin barely has any hair and even that is grey with age. In the movie he's got a son, sure but he doesn't look old at all. I'd guess he's around his mid fourties or so. Saying all this with all due respect for Travis Fimmel. He played an awesome Lothar, really enjoyed his performance. I guess that's what counts, right?
So many ppl in the comments not understanding how building a movie works, you can't just copy paste the story onto the screen. It would be a terrible watch and most likely take forever. I thouroughly enjoyed the movie even tho they did change quite a lot (most of it still having the same result tho as mentioned by Nobbel87). Looking forward to more movies, and by the amount it's earned so far I don't doubt we'll have more. Can't wait to see Dragons.
There's a difference between trimming and rearranging things to fit into a cinematic presentation and straight up just retconning things because Blizzard is addicted to retcons. When you're making a change that literally affects absolutely nothing except the fact that it's just not correct, you are doing something wrong.
+Fuzzballfox Onionring things that work in an interactive medium, or in literary works might not translate to a movie very well. It is not just a case of trimming and rearranging, some story arcs just don't work at all in movies, and need to be retold in a different way to lead to a similar end result. Jesus, this is one of the worst comment sections I've seen in a long time
The problem here is that Warcraft has too much lore. Too much, too dense lore. There's a truly stupid number of people to keep track of, all of whom do important things. Far too many incredibly long-running plotlines and side-stories that no audience is going to pay attention to or remember. Too much pre-amble to the actual beginning of the story wherein the orcs invade Lordaeron. You could have made a freaking ten-year-long soap opera out of this series. It probably would have worked better, too, giving so much more of the factions and characters involved their own space in the narrative in a way that doesn't leave anything hanging for far too long to care. On the other hand, they could have just approached this from the perspective of making a movie from the point of view of the first game. Show us the war from the humans' side, at least at first, and slowly open up more details about the orcs beyond them just being ugly nasty dudes as they first appear. That way you trim out the complicated backstory stuff for later, once you've already got the audience familiar with basic things and invested in the war itself. Instead, they half-assed it. They tried to cover the entire lore of the series, but they can't fit it all in so they just change stuff to cut out huge chunks of the more intricate plotting. The end result is neither canonically accurate, nor honestly very compelling because it's paced terribly and still too confusing and dense.
The movie story is probably better.. but its presentation was hasty, backstory elements were completely missing. Which left some audience baffled to what the fuck is going. People don't like things they don't understand. One of the few valid criticism that it has.
I agree. While I enjoyed the movie, I think they tried to stuff too much into the story and left out some important components (like the Burning Legion). It would have made a lot more sense if people understood where 'fel' came from instead playing it as just some sort of evil woo woo magic. I get that condensing the story is necessary, but just dumping people into the middle of something and not taking the time to explain why, who, where just makes for a lot of confusion.
Im not actually to fussed about the lore changes even though i absolutely love the lore! as long as they follow the major points like the burning legion and sargaras and when they do the Arthas storyline they keep the major points in that story the same im happy :) I mean it is a movie somethings just cant be carried over :D
We're up to 3 total WoW canons at this point it's getting really confusing. I honestly just focus on the main WoW one and treat the rest as fanfiction.
