Hurley from the hit show Lost summarizes everything that's happened in the first four seasons in 88 seconds. Now you can start watching Season 5 without worrying about missing anything :)
For those that have never seen the show Hurley would do 'stuff' like this from time to time. (Although this example is the funniest and best). It always served 4 general purposes. Least importantly it served as show recap for occasional new viewers. Secondly, Hurley would often express the thoughts and mood of the audience, and would help serve as both an anchor and 'character of reality'.(meaning what we would say, feel, think, or act ike if we there). He also expressed fan theories concerning 'the island' being hell, or Hurley's thoughts, or time travel, or his weight. But lastly and perhaps most importantly this is one of many examples of the Writers (Lindelof and Cuse) poking fun at themselves and those that took LOST a bit too seriously.
...Or maybe the writers thought that they were the smartest people in the room and got butt-hurt when everyone figured it out from episode 2. Then they just gutted it out to earn the subsequent season money.
@@tony.g20 I mean that before the first season ended, the clear answer to what was going on was that the people were all dead and in a sort of afterlife. That is what viewers figured out. Then the creators claimed, "no, no, that's not it. They are not in purgatory." Which turned out to be a lie.
@@FinnMcRiangabra my god I feel bad for you. If that us what u think you might want to try again... they were not all dead...wth are you talking about. Ive seen LOST 17X. Go troll Buffy ... whats your favorite show?
The crazy thing about this show was that no matter what point you were at, if you were to recap it up to that point, it would always take twice as long to explain the last few episodes as it would to explain everything before that.
And that, my simple friend is summed up as (drumroll please) piss poor story telling! Make all the excuses you want. This show was utter trash. Pretty decent acting in the first two seasons though.
"In the end, we are shown purgatory. The characters all come to accept that have died at some point, either on or off the island. They chose to wait for each other in purgatory before crossing over because of how important they were to each other." Doesn't seem that hard.
The reason why the button had to be pushed every 108 seconds was to contain the electromagnetic energy on the island. That one time when Desmond didn't push the button, the electromagnetic energy was not contained and that is why the plane crashed; cause all metal things were being pulled toward the island. In season 5, in 1977 or whatever year they were in, that is how Juliet was pulled into that hole along with all those other metal things.
@@milacruz3970 yes, a lot of people complain about Lost not explaining a lot of mysteries, but actually it explained everything, just not directly in your face. (There are actually some things that was not explained, but not many, and not important at all)
@@ermisgrivas8280 I disagree. That episode (Expose) is more important than many give it credit to. In the next episode, Left Behind.. Sawyer is "tricked" (no spoilers) by Hurley. This is critical as it is a turning point for Sawyer from selfish prick, to someone who can be depended on to lead (which becomes critical later in the series)
Even if you dont skip and watch every episode twice, it still doesnt make sense! Crazy movie! I still do not understand why the 5 from Oceanic 6 lied about what really happened.
"and there was a button you had to press every 108 minutes or else...... well it was never very clear on that." I love how even Hurley didn't understand the purpose of the button too. Made this whole speech 10x funnier for me.
Pressing the button every 108 minutes discharged the electromagnetic energy that is building up underneath because the Dharma Initiative accidently breached it.
Back in the day where waiting a whole week just made every episode special and you'd spend the week talking about it with mates. Todays generation just binge whole seasons of shows in 1 or 2 days.
Well put lol. Was so into the show as a kid the I realized the writers didnt expect it to go on as long as it did and just picked plot points out of a hat
I don't think so. (spoilers ahead) I think they had a plan, but the plan was, "We're going to have this great show and it's going to be really mysterious and everybody's going to be wondering what's going on, and after about 4 seasons we're going to drop the punch line that everybody's dead and it's going to be the biggest shock in TV history!" What they didn't count on, was that everybody was going to guess the punch line before the first episode ended. I remember when it aired and I went online to talk about it, and every single post I saw regarding the show contained some variation of, "I bet they're all really dead." The writers were stuck - everybody had guessed the punchline and they had a LOT of show to write! So they gamely went on and wrote the show, pretending that everybody didn't already know the punch line, and when they finally revealed it acted like it was a big deal even though everybody already knew.
@@SarahB1863 Yes, I believe I read that once as well, but my point remains. They did not know where they were going with the story. As if it was some sort of game, they kept resetting the narrative - a specialty of Bad Robot productions. I found Lost to be entertaining on occasion, and even intriguing once or twice, but by season three I had reached the point of “enough already.” I did make an exception for Evangeline Lilly, as my wife made one for Matthew Fox, so we kept watching and it was a real kick seeing Kevin Tighe play a villain. That is my best memory of this outside the premiere episode, which was stellar. It was the amount of red herrings J.J. Abrams served up in this overwrought and overplayed modern melodrama that caused me to founder on the smorgasbord. It could have and should have been so much better, which (again) is characteristic of Bad Robot.
@@stantheman9072 the show runners were damon lindelof and carlton cuse. JJ abrams co created the show with damon and jeffrey lieber. he wrote and directed the pilot and the premiere of season 3 with damon. he didn’t have much involvement with the show beyond that despite being an executive director. he was busy with his other show alias at the time which is why he didn’t have a whole lot of involvement with the show.
@SarahB1863 It still amazes me that they had a character explain explicitly what had been going on in the last few moments of the finale, and yet people STILL think they were dead the whole time. That's not what happened
I love the way he says "and then there was a smoke monster" as literally the 2nd thing he mentions after about not being rescued. And also as if his mother should know what one is hahaha
For as much shit that Lost gets for being confusing or convoluted, the characters are amazing and how they grew together on the island will always keep me loving it
i watched Lost like 10 years ago or even more and it felt like I'm watching a thousand episodes and it was so weird & loooong but I couldn't stop watching and the end got me like "wtf is happening"
Relax guys. Obviously the show was quite popular and a lot of people loved it. Of course it's not for everybody. But there is no reason to insult someone else over their show preferences and opinions.
This reminds me of the bonus scene from the box set after the finale, viewers don't acknowledge how crazy the story becomes, when you make word of it though the freakishness really begins to unfold.
@gusbacon Because that was "Lost up to that point" It takes another four seconds for Hurley to say, "Then I take over for Jacob and we all come together after death."
@Deathbringer99699 The Final Season revealed that many of the mysteries of the Island involved a guy called The Man in Black (because his name was never mentioned, he just wore a black robe) with supernatural powers that he gained from the mystical Source of the Island. Among these powers he had the ability to turn into a black smoke creature (yes, the Monster) and to create visions of dead people. The guy Locke saw in that old cabin was The Man in Black, not Jacob.
Well, 30 or so are still on that island, as far as he knows. The other 270 or so people aboard the plane died in the crash. Everyone seems to forget about them. Oh yeah plus the other 20 or so who died after the crash but before the Oceanic 6 left.
The best show ever that went nowhere! This is what happens when writers have a good pitch but don’t think it through and just decide to "go with the flow"
From the philosophical perspective, we all, as well as all our stories, end up in nowhere, and for the most part, "go with the flow". In this regard life cycle of a story is similar to the one of a person. What happens after the story ends, and how it ends, depends on what you believe in. Now, like itnor not, but Lost had a very obvious biblical and christian connotations since the very beginning, therefore - it went to the white light. Sopranos, on the opposite, had none of that, and ended up according to it's main hero's beliefs. This does make quite a lot of sense. That being said, If you believe you could do a better job than Lost writers, you are always welcome to write and direct a better show.
I believe Damon Lindelof said in an interview that the creators wanted to end the show after like 2-3 seasons but it was so popular and successful that abc extended it anyway.
@@bladerunner.1984 yeah good try, just read a little about the story of the show and you’ll see why it really went nowhere. the sudden success meant the writers had to milk the story for as long as they could. Lost had a brilliant start and concept but it got (hehe) lost along the way. You don’t have to be a michelin star cook to know when the meat is rotten.
@@vlino87 And even with the hiccups along the way, the writers created memorable characters and a lore that ultimately makes sense with a little digging. Not everything was absolutely answered and some episodes were bad (Expose and Stranger in a Strange Land) but this show still left a mark in history as one of the best tv shows of all time. It doesn’t help that people completely misinterpret the ending though.
This will always be one of the greatest series in television history to me because of how detailed and interesting the characters are. The writers probably did not know where this was all going but man... Some great antagonist and protagonist conflicts. Like Twilight Zone meets daytime soap.
I’m still confused. But it’s a great show. Needs multiple viewings! I think we all take what we need from it. Loved it! The finale made me cry and then I just sat in the quiet and thought about life for an hour.
They weren't. The purgatory is only the flashsideways in the last season. Jack's dad even says that everything they ever did was real. So season 1 - 5 and the season 6 on island scenes they were alive.
My first time watching the show, I started in season 4 and it was all over the place. 12 years later, I rewatched from the beginning, thinking that it would make more sense. Yeah that wasn't the case lol
OK so this was my favorite show ever. I had time to watch when I was out on medical leave.... I would literally watch half a season every other day or so. The show got confusing as hell.... but I was like stoned so I expected all that... and surprisingly the time travel part made soooo much sense to me whilst stoned... now its kinda blurry. At the end of the show I thought questions would get answered but I'm still confused. Were they dead @the end and just having like dejavu?
Lost was perfect for that point in time, because we didnt know any better. watching it later proves that it was good for only THAT moment in time and it is obvious they didnt either. fond memories tho. I dont intend to get back to the show, because if one digs, there will be holes.
As someone who started this show when like season 4 or 5 was being aired weekly, I knew what it was from the jump. A nowhere story that was going to be entertaining for a while. I made it to like season 3 but I knew half way through season 2 that this story was just not gonna go anywhere. It was fun to watch, for a time. But I’m not a moron. The story telling just didn’t have any kind of direction. It was just… let’s see where we can go with the next episode type thing
@spid3rpunch Hurley didn't get stranded for a couple of years. From season 1 to the end of season 4 he and the Oceanic Six was on the Island for 3 months.
You cut this clip too short. The best part of it is when his mother tells him she doesn't understand what he just said, but she believes him. The love expressed in that moment is part of what made Lost work. It certainly wasn't the plot cuz there really wasn't one they were just making it up as they went along, but the connections between people felt organic and real and honest. They weren't of course. It was just acting. LOST is one big magic trick that messes with your head but we put up with all the crap for moments like this when the show really felt magical and special.
Thanks for confirming what I thought - I gave that show a season and a half then get bored.. you can get that magic in shows that aren't a complete waste of time..
Jonnyboy Animates I just finished the entire series before they took it off Netflix and for the most part, you're right. It's a good show, season 4 being the weakest. Sun and Kate were the only two who had legit reasons for returning back to the island. Everyone else's reason for returning back, really made no sense.
Sparkz Mentalz I agree with you on the Sun and Kate part, but I disagree with season 4 being the weakest. It had some of the best episodes in the show, like The Constant.
Jonnyboy Animates What I dislike about season 4 was how they kept splitting up for the freighter nonsense, Claire's disappearance, and the whole Finding Nemo hunt for Jacob's cabin. Desmond's amnesia, not remembering who Sayid is, was kind of ridiculous and soap opera-ish imo, though I did enjoy the Christmas phone call to Penny plot in The Constant. Mike's return was pretty lackluster. And why kill off Ana Lucia so early, just to have her replaced by Isabella who dies a in a silly way like Artz? I also enjoyed the Jack/Jacob debate about faith vs science in The Orchid in Season 4.
A lot of what happened in Lost wasn't explained, and a lot of what happened may never be explained by sound science. But the reality of 11/12 of the series was explained, so any theories we have about its nature have to fit into that if we want to include every aspect of the show.
I liked Eko's line "Don't mistake coincidence for fate." But what if he had it backwards, brotha? What if we shouldn't mistake fate for coincidence? That's my theory about the Numbers, anyway. They're all a coincidence and can be ascribed to any meaning that any observer can put to them, whether it's the last 6 candidates, the key to saving the world from a scientific catastrophe, or just 6 numbers that people are somehow drawn towards for no reason. When you think about any explanation anyone will give about the Numbers, it always leaves the begging question, "Why those six numbers?"
@@ZuluRomeo I always thought of the Numbers as being about energy. Who has the right energy, due to their life experience, to defeat the Man in Black; the power of the transmitted numbers not just to open and close energy portals such as the hatch charge (perhaps that's how the Others came to and left the island, or made entry possible for new people, hence why Rousseau's team heard them the same night they crashed) but also to generate bad luck to anyone who didn't have the self-belief to ignore them (hence why bad luck only befalls Hurley until he resolves to stop believing in the curse).
i assume you were one of those that watched lost along as it released every week, every year. i watched it when it was all out already and the smoke monster was kinda all the show was about for me. it was like the main mystery
@@twentytwoedits2442 I mean, if you have a plot where you have some people lost in an island after a plain crash you have potential of creating a great story, there are a lot of ideas you can create for the plot to be well developed, but a monster?? Come on...
@@ginpak7037 yea why not? It's something out of the ordinary but I see it as a quality. What other 'lost on an island film or series do you know that are like lost. None. Because they made their own thing even if its silly for some. Lost is just lost, there's nothing like it
@@ginpak7037 & there were soooo many episodes - watching lost felt like being on the island. There was so much plot and so much confusion that I actually felt lost watching. That's what the show was about. Being in school and thinking about Lost and about the next episode I haven't watched yet & how I will watch it when I come home .. It was like actually going back to the island yourself. It was amazing not despite but because of its flaws
The "monster" was around since day 1, since the pilot episode. So you're saying it all went down in the very first episode for you? In that case it might just not be the show for you, which is totally fine: we all have our preferences.
@Larry Talbot Actually you did. If you liked the 1st two seasons, Season 3 is a must-see. Season 4 is optional (starts to wobble a bit on the stretch, but still fun). Don’t go farther though - you should always leave a party while you’re still having a good time. Just my opinion of course
@Will Muny You are correct. I was just saying you haven’t *really* gotten the Lost experience if you haven’t seen Season 3. Plus, S3 E10, Tricia Tanaka is Dead, is one of the great “feel-good”episodes of TV history, the kind television *used* to be capable of. And who can ever forget the ending of S3 E14, Exposé?
When people ask me what is Lost all about, I often have difficulty in summing it up fro them simply, however Hurley sums it up perfectly. Love him!! Also love the quote: I talk to dead people the last thing I want is paranoia.
This plot is like listening to 5 year old tell a story. They just make it up as they go and can’t remember what they said 30 seconds ago so nothing makes any since.
There was a smoke monster... Completely forgetting the monster that could kill people in trees, rip trees out of the ground and turned out to be a polar bear!
