She won the best new artist Grammy for this. I love every song on this album. Try "Weasel and the White Boys Cool," "Danny's All-Star Joint," "Night Train", or anything from this record.
Rickie is a total gem. The more you listen to her you will realize that her phrasing is totally exquisite. Some have even compared it to Billie Holiday.
Rickie Lee is an amazing (yet surprisingly under acknowledged???) talent. She is a story telling musician; top tier story teller and top tier musician. Her songs are, for me, cinematic. She should have been scoring films... WTF... ? Her voice live...? Forget about it. Un-be-liev-able.
Jay & Amber, You'll love Rickie's "Danny's All Star Joint" even More!!!!! Cool bass intro, great lyrics/vocals and swinging horn jam in the last minute!! edit- Chuck E was a real person. Chuck E. Weiss was a friend of hers, and a fellow singer/songwriter. She had some great session musician on this her debut album including: Steve Gadd, Jeff Porcaro, Tom Scott, Michael McDonald, Randy Newman, and Chuck Findley.
The last song on this album, "Last Chance Texaco" is literally one of my favorite songs of all time and my favorite song of Rickie's. Such an amazing singer/songwriter.
@@heyheyjk-lashe named her book that...RLJ is such a cool interesting artist...I met her at a book signing & her latest album is a cool jazz covers album...
This was released in 1979. My older brother's name is Chuck. I'd sing this to him. He wasn't amused . I didn't feel bad after all the pranks he pulled on me for yrs. Love you both!! Your insight into the music is fantastic 👍🥰
OMG...my younger brother's name is Chuck also and I did the same thing with the same results! rofl He's getting married next week. I was looking up this song for the DJ! hehehehe
I just love the quality of her voice. It slides along from word to word, then the little stops when she hits the "E", then dips and floats and hits those bell-clear high notes so effortlessly. She plays her voice like a brass instrument.💕🎶
So nice to see you finally got to Rickie Lee; one of the greats, with a dynamic, bluesy jazzy, offbeat, monster talent delivery. Maybe next "Last Chance Texaco" and she does a beautiful cover of "Just Walk Away Rene" or many of the spectacular songs she did great justice to. Enjoy more of her, soon!
Love “Last Chance Texaco” and while it would be great to see a reaction, IMHO, it’s too somber for this channel. The channels I sub to that are more eclectic (no offense to RSR) would give “LCT” a try. ✌🏽
@@gabrielmcdonnell8699 ..it is not too somber, it's hauntingly beautiful, and has genius, creative metaphors in the lyrics. It's what reaction channels are all about, or should be.. imo/
@@rullvox5912 No argument here. My point was that reaction channels (esp the ones with over 100K subs like RJR) are monetization-driven (nothing wrong with that) so more times than not, they will choose mainstream hits over deep cuts, if you will. That doesn’t mean they won’t dabble but they will consistently circle back to the Top 40. Just the nature of the hustle that is RU-vid music reacting.
Rickie Lee Jones is a gem, who's still performing and recording today. Her second album, PIRATES, is an underrated classic. Much darker in tone to the jazzy, boppy tunes from her first album (which is also great). She even did some trance/trip-hop with GHOSTYHEAD in the late 90s, which is a complete switch in sound but also really cool. Such a versatile, talented lady.
It drives me absolutely crazy when people call her a one hit wonder. She is amazing. Still working. Her album The Magazine is a work of art. From this same album though, you gotta do Danny's All Star Joint. So funky!! The Real End, Satellites, so many great songs. She even punked-out with a super intense number called White Girl. I just love her.
“The Magazine” is my hands-down favorite. I wore out that cassette! I remember either senior yr of high sch (or freshman yr of college) freaking out when “It Must Be Love” was used on an ep of “thirtysomething” (for those that remember the whiny Yuppie drama 😉).
I was a kid when this came out, but I *just* realized how much of an influence Rickie Lee Jones was on Sheryl Crow! Holy cow, it just hit me smack in the face hearing it again.
When Sheryl Crow first came out she reminded me of Rickie so much. Which made me love Sheryl. Her "All I wanna do" song reminds me of this song. Thanx so much, take care, Peace
Such a sexy, sultry voice. She absolutely killed it with this album. You couldn't listen to any contemporary radio station for an hour without hearing this song (so it seemed) at the time.
We need more Joni Mitchell, please. “Both Sides Now” “River” “Circle Game”. I saw her a couple weeks back at The Gorge (with Brandi Carlile) and it was absolutely amazing to see such a legend still killing it.
@@GrizazzleHow can Joni have a "hollow falsetto" when she's a natural high sorprano? You know 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘰 (roughly) translates to "𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐞 higher voice" - right?
This song was written about Chuck E Weiss, a LA music legend. He fronted his band Chuck E Weiss and the God dam liars. They played 12 years straight every Monday, at midnite at the Central now known as the Viper Room.
What anchors this track is the cool swing of studio drummer Steve Gadd, who also famously played on Paul Simon's 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover (among thousands of other songs).
One of the hottest songs of the 70’s, and one if the last great songs of the 70’s, always one of my favorites! Nice to see you guys finally discovering this gem 💎! A much have in everyone’s collection and playlist! I bet y’all heard this at the” Drugsstow” or the supermarket! 😄😄😄
I stumbled across this CD in a second hand store. Id heard this song and loved it, so i bought it. Took it home, and like the album. There were a few other stand out tracks for me. I play bass, so loved Danny's All Star Joint, Young Blood and Easy Money (sounds like a double bass on that one).
@@timgeary4550 Lowell did do the song on his solo album Thanks I'll Eat It Here, but it was written by Rickie Lee Jones and she thanked him a few times because it brought the song more attention and she was grateful for that.
Her early albums were amazing! Her songwriting is inspirational. Great musicians behind her too Her songs were hard to describe but never boring. She had one of the best inventive, artistic and cool concerts I've ever seen in my life. And she is still an artist that I still enjoy choosing to listen to.
As a kid it took me about year to be a "grown up kid" and get my friends to call me Chuck......then this song came out. And it was being played everywhere! So al my friends were back to calling me Chucky. But after this song came out....being called Chucky wasn't so bad. As for Ricky Lee...you're both right. Such a unique and playful vocal talent. Thanks for doing this reaction. Brings back so many memories or my childhood. I love seeing you both take notice so early in a song like this! Jay caught that nice guitar in the beginning. And Amber lite up to Ricky Lee's first syllables. You guys are awesome! Great reaction! Thanks 👍
I remember hearing this when it first hit...IT WAS FIRE!! Loved her voice, her style and she had vocal styling on the same line as Joni Mitchell, who was amazing in her right. Nora Jones sounds a little like this with her style, and I love her voice also.
As a Rocker THROUGH & THROUGH, I was so glad that you both reacted to THIS song. Truly one of those GREATEST SONGS in musical history. Not only did it BREAK THROUGH the "proverbial glass ceiling" when it was released (the '70 music scene was electic, to say the least), but musically, to combine folk, classic rock, r-n-b, AND jazz (Ahem).. Rickie Lee Jones was AHEAD of the game. I just LOVE the bassline... so GROOVY!!!! Peace, Love, & Liberty. Go Cincinnati Bengals!!!!
This song always makes me think of a good childhood friend named Chuck. It was popular while we were in grade school and my friends and I used to sing this to him all the time! Great memories!
Great reaction….Rickie Lee is a great distinctive artist…Another of her songs to check out is The Horses…She did her own version and it was covered by an Australian singer - Daryl Braithwaite - who made it into a gigantic hit there
Finally Proof!!! You DO take suggestions from comments. I requested this about 2 years ago!! I LOVE IT!!! I really love the song and especially Rickie Lee Jones!! If you havent, you really should watch the live clip of her doing this song. Very cool.
Live videos of RLJ are hard to find. The few that I've seen just don't live up to the studio recordings, but I'll look for this song recorded live. Thanks for the heads-up!
one of my all time favorite songs. "if this ain't healthy, it is some kind of clean" ....... "christ, I think he's even combed his hair" ......mad lines, gorgeous hooks, and that voice......... kind of perfect
Rickie Lee Jones! So cool, so laid back, "Woody and Dutch on a slow train to Peking", is a snappy foot tapper, "Company", is heart wrenchingly wistful, and Young Blood" is a vibe! ... love me some Rickie Lee Jones!❤❤❤
This is literally in my top 10 favorite songs of all time, It's so clever, mellow, and jazzy. And the little twist in the lyrics at the end: "Chuck E's in love with the little girl singing this song..."
This reminds me of my mom. She bought this record when I was a kid and she would always play this tune. I hadn't heard it for years, but just recently I sat down and listened to it, and I realized just what a great song it was.
Ricki Lee Jones is one of the most unique female artists. Super talented. Grew up on the streets and sings with that street slang that is so unique. Saw her in concert and was blown away.
HEY guys this was her only hit song reached number 4 on Billboard pop singles chart in the summer of 1979 fun fact when Rickie Lee was accepting her Grammy for Best New Artist one of the people she thanked was her accountant I think that was a first Amber consider these '70s songs for Female Friday Dorothy Moore Misty Blue Thelma Houston Don't Leave Me This Way Yvonne Elliman remake of Hello Stranger and If I can't have you Melissa Manchester Midnight Blue Mary McGregor Torn Between Two Lovers ABBA The Name Of The Game Gladys Knight and the Pips Midnight Train To Georgia keep up the great work guys
......,,,,,, !!! Here are some free pieces of the English language, that you apparently can't acquire on your own. If you need to know where to put them, contact any elementary school teacher.
Although Chuck E's In Love was Rickie Lee Jones biggest hit, she had 6 other songs that charted on various Billboard charts from 1979 to 1989: Young Blood made it to number 40 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1979. Woody and Dutch on the Slow Train to Peking reached number 31 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks in 1981. Pirates (So Long Lonely Avenue) made it to number 40 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks in 1981. A Lucky Guy reached 64 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 1981. The Real End made it to number 83 on Billboard's Hot 100 charts and 37 on Billboard's Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks in 1984. Satellites reached 23 on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart in 1989. BTW, you are not e.e. cummings, so learn to use punctuation.
Her first album was in1979 and featured this hit. I guess you could call her more of an 80’s artist then. Either way, this is an iconic song that was always on the radio back then. 😉
The first song I covered with the band in the 80’s. And I still pump it up in the car on road trips to the beach. Definitely puts me in the mood to rock!
Crystal Gayle: " Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" Dionne Warwuck: "Say A Little Prayer", "Do You Know the Way to San Jose", "Heartbreaker", "There's Always Something There To Remind Me", "Don't Make Me Over". Stephanie Mills: " Feel The Fire" and "I Feel Good All Over.( Both are live videos from Sinbad's summer mini concert), "Sweett Sensation" Diana Ross/Supremes: "My World is Empty Without You", "I Hear a Synphoney", "Never Can Say Goid-Bye", "The Happening", " Ain't No Mountain High Enough" Jennifer Hudson: "And I'm Telling You" ( video from the movie Dream Girls) Barbra Streisand: "The Way We Were", Nancy Wilson: "The Very Thought of You" Patti LaBelle: "Lady Marmalade", "Love, Need and Want You" Eryka.Badu: "Tyrone" Tina Turner: " Proud Mary" ( love from Wembly in 2000...Tina was 61). I know you did Proud Mary with Ike and Tina from back in the day. But this rendition is better ( better than all the other Proud Mary videos) Mary Mary: "Shackles" Gospel/R &B genre. Connie Francis: "Whose Sorry Now", "Where The Boys Are" Cher: "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves Cher and Tina duet ( love video from The Chef Show). "shame, Shame, Shame" OK, I'm done with my suggestions! 😂
She is still performing and is currently touring. In her career she has written for other artists, for herself and has written for TV and movies. She has a unique vocal style and phraseology. , being dubbed, "The Queen of Coolsville." Her debut album took the music world by storm and this song was played non-stop on the radio where I lived. Love this song. So many memories.
Rickie Lee is outrageously talented. Plays multiple instruments and still singing this as beautifully today! She's on tour now! It's her on guitar in this one - the little riff is hers.
I have to make another comment.... Rickie.....i sooooo love you. Have seen you in concert last in Houston where you honored Dr. John! It was a night of pure Heaven!
Love Rickie Lee Jones...she is really cool, original & interesting, with a great catalogue...one of my faves is "Flying Cowboys" with great songs The Horses & Satellites...love her book too...Last Stop Texaco...she is like the female Tom Waits...
I remember this song came out when I was in high school. My father for some reason loved this song. It was unusual for him to like anything on the radio. He loved jazz. Is this jazz? I don't know.
This was released the year I got married and I was already inhabited music collector. This was one of those albums I was always going to buy but consequently never did. However, and believe it or not, I picked this vinyl up about three months ago and then antique store for $5 and brought it home and put it on the set to play... I think I listen through it completely several times that first evening and it was on my turntable for a couple of weeks. I couldn't quite get enough of it. One of those songs was later recorded by Little Feat (Easy Money) and as much as I have always loved that song Ms. Jones' original version is the bomb.
