"VIBRANT HIGHLAND, COMMERCIAL LOVE" ("Love Market")
“It’s a story of wild & exotic love. It’s a story of tribal kings and opium trade. It’s a story of kidnapping and loss. It’s a story of sexual discovery, of spirits and magic. It’s a story of government propaganda vs. the fascinating yet harrowing reality of the people.”
Far up in Vietnam’s remote mountains, once a year, a secretive Love Market is held. Delving beyond the ambiguous myths, this unique, independently produced adventure documentary discovers a reality much more fascinating, even if painful, than the legends told.
Directed & Produced by Matt Dworzańczyk
Associate Producer: Gerald Herman
Cinematography by Hoang Chaizee
Sound Editing: Hoang Thu Thuy & William Cox
Original Musical Score by: Josh Kopeček

As a Hmong ethnic from Laos living in the US, I can tell you that the Hmong legend of Romeo and Juliet is true but the love market is one I have never heard off. Our parents passed our stories, culture and traditions through generations and generations. Love market was probably made up for tourist attractions. While I am glad that my people are getting recognized, to be recognized or something that don’t exist is not what I would want. At least the people you interviewed were very honest with their story. My people are some of the most humble and simple human beings on earth. Whenever and wherever I meet them, I automatically felt at home. And when I traveled to a state without them, I missed their warm personalities and presence. And one more thing, thank you so much for pronouncing the word “Hmong” right. That means so much to us. I really enjoyed watching this documentary. It has brought smiles to my face.

Correct pronunciation of *hmong* is *hw-moñg.* But unfortunately most of foreigner cannot speak it in proper way. I belongs to tibeto-burman family. And accent that hmong people use is familiar with my accent. Although our languages are entirely different. *Hmong* belongs to *hmong-mein* family

Most elders don't teach the new generation we watch and observe the daily American version of hmong life, most don't know our own history or even know they are called miao or meo and think they are mongolians and not prefer them selves as miao.

That's because "Love Market" is not an old story like the Hmong fairytale. It is just a recent invention. When the French colonised Northwest Vietnam in 1896, 12 years after declaring Vietnam as France's jewel colony, it needed to boost the popularity of French rule. And so the love market was born. The communists later adopted French government's way of dealing. Obviously odd, though, it was a French creation. Dunno if the rest of mainland Southeast Asia, Northeast India and Southern China have the same. I only remember these types of markets back in North Caucasus and Kyrgyzstan.

I have just came across your documentary just now. I guess it's better late than never. As for the "Love Market," the Hmoob (Hmong) people has an annual event called New Year's that also serve the same purpose for those that are interested in finding potential love. It's amazing that after many decades of migrations and even those of us that eventually sought refuge in the US and other countries can still relate to our Hmoob relatives shown in your documentary. If you ever wanted to go back and capture the true accent of our history and culture, let us work together to ensure of such opportunity. Thanks for completing this documentary. -Txiabneeb Vaj (Tzianeng Vang), MN, USA

Information in many ways is power, and it can be corrupted to exercise control over others. It also can be used to free one from others corruption. The incident with the authorities (police or police equivalent?) was interesting as an exercise in power - for what purpose? Simply failing to comply with policies? And what is the purpose of the policies - to prevent information from being shared?

In Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand, the hilltribe life is like a different world to the lowland majority. We've existed like this for hundreds of years. Thank you to the government for allowing our people to maintain our traditional lifestyle. There are things we can learn from mainstream society, but there are also lessons mainstream society can learn from our simple lifestyles.

Fascinating!! As a Hmong-American, I appreciate the rawness of the life stories told by the Hmong of North Vietnam, and the questions raised to whether the stories in regards to the "Love Market" was fabricated or not. Furthermore, I too also enjoy how the film came to life and how the team completed the film despite encountering such a catastrophic problem.

@EtheriumSky
@EtheriumSky 7 лет назад
The translations were indeed one of the biggest challenges to filming. So many different languages, so many different dialects, most of them have no written alphabets, people from villages short distance away sometimes can't even understand each other - and then there's the whole cultural distrust between the minorities and the Kinh which you have to overcome before you even start to build worthwhile working/personal relationships with the people. But it's a great region and the locals there are certainly fascinating people. Thanks for watching!

+Etherium Sky Films & Media I wondered all along this documentary whether the story of the live market was a plot to increase tourism, how ever at points I wondered if it was also a cover for human trafficking, the parts where missing girls and boys were discussed made me feel this was a possibility, any thoughts?
@samanthabennett5145
@samanthabennett5145 7 лет назад
+Samantha Bennett I was supposed to say "love market" not live; sorry about that;)
@EtheriumSky
@EtheriumSky 7 лет назад
I don't think it's exactly a "cover up plot for human trafficking" but indirectly it becomes a distraction which serves a related purpose. "Legends" or "events" like the love market, which have little if any truth to them, only end up promoting the false idea of what this place is and who these people are - and such ignorance only takes us further away from tackling relevant problems like human trafficking, crushing poverty or crooked politics...
@wayneyoun9767
@wayneyoun9767 7 лет назад
sorry to say, but you are ignorant of life in these villages. You cannot transpose western values and life on eastern society. With respect to Vietnam, your uninformed opiinion is obvious to those of us who have lived in vientam, have family in veitnam and appreciate the culture in which someone from the west usually has a very difficult time in understanding let alone respect and appreciate life in Vietnam. Just because a person does not have the lifestyle of the west, it does not mean they are living in poverty as it is a subjective term. Open your mind just a little bit, if that is even possible.

Thank you for the time and effort you put on making this film. It has given me a nostalgic feeling: how beautiful Vietnam is and how friendly the people are; how modern society has not reached these places and the fact that some people still consider authority's permission for such simple thing as capturing interviews. The Internet does come to be useful if we know how to use it. Thanks again.

You have given me a new version of "cho tinh Khau Vai" and wonder how long the people in Ha Giang will have been exploited by the gov't and industry without bringing any concrete factual benefits to the Nung, Giay, Tay, etc in the highland?. why the hate against the US government. that happen 50 years ago. on average, the Hmong who lose the war and would force to leave live a much beter life then the Hmong who won teh war and remian in southeast asia. much of the elder hmong who were refuge or have lose family members during teh war was grant US citizenship, got welfare+ social security living very comfortable in teh US without having to work a single hour in their older age, just laying around ont eh sofa watch tv and youtube all days. just sleep eat hten sleep and watch soem tv, living liek kings and queens doing nothing. although us 2nd generation hmong have to earn our keeps, we are doing pretty well here int eh US. Its sadden that many people still run the narative that we were trick by teh cia and paid a heavy price in that war. if u look at the number, US lose 50,000 out of teh 500,000 then send, about a 10% casualty, hmong lose 30,000 out of the 300,000 on our side 10% casualty, North ans south vietnames lose 3million out of the 30mil population of both side, about 10% casualty, imo teh lose were evenly about 10%, in term os raw number, vietnames lose were 100x ours. greatest lose belong ot combodia in that region with nearly 20millions cause of crazy commmie. our great lose was not during teh war but after war when commie took over. they did what they did best mass extermination. after commie took over in russian, 50million exterminate, after commie took over in china, 60million dead, after commie took over combodia 20mil dead, we dotn knwo teh officail numbers in vietnam and laos after commie took over but should be in the hundred of thousand atleast. as for why we fought in that war, just look at the infamous ho chi minh trail and see who territory it run through. now imagine moving millions of trigger happy, horny and lonely commie troop through that area with many nearby hmong village with almost to station soldier for guard. u tell me that those commie were peacefully moving through those territory and peacefully go into south vietnam, lol. i guess it ws teh american who raid, rape and burn down the hmong villages at the borders and blame it on the Vietnames. well what ever the truth is, it history, let move on and try to co-exist in a more peaceful world.

@@yia01 I am glad to know that the 2nd generation Hmong living there are doing very well and thriving. But all of this is about identity. I was not born in the west and I dont live in USA but I know the country is nice and melting pot where others are accepted. Atleast that what is said and I believe so. Those who have been given social security, I know some of them specially men ended up doing nothing and just drinking while their women have worked hard and raised their family. And this all is when they did not even know the language. I am myself a displaced person but by choice so I feel that having a place that you call own feel different even if there is not much luxury that we enjoy in the west now. But this is only after we grow up and see everything around, all those beautiful shiny lights and something every child living in a poor country dreams of. Atleast I dreamed of it and was crazy to come where I am now. So not hate against anyone and I am just grateful God made it possible. But it is sad that powerful countries making others their playground. What in the past Russia and USA were playing now same thing China is doing because they are powerful. After 50 years again millions will be displaced and their generations will cry for their homeland. But the problem is once you move away from you home, neither you belong to the new country and neither to the one where your parents were born. But we will never know the truth, but only poor suffer in the end. You are right that it is time to move forward and put everything behind, I am glad atleast some countries like Vietnam are getting better economically but now they have to listen to China. But if its benefit for trade and change poor people lives then why not. But when I look at such lovely people it makes me feel happy that they are so pure. It will be so nice to exist in a better world.

24:47 -"After that we were so poor".. And i must say, instead of poor: PURE. These people are perhaps the purest among the nearly 8 billion. They are brave and beautiful, facing life with clean hands and soul. May they enjoy life, realize that they are real heroes. Wish humanity could follow their way, and rescue itself from the loop of being an abused data in a greedy digital/global/non human machine that went out of control. -Yes, some parts of that evil machine could help to avoid these pure souls of losing two children and animals. They have 12 clans, and many of them migrate to Vietnam, Lao, Thailand, Burma, and USA. First start from China, why the migrate from China the first place, it’s because war or something else? The people's life stories, the music, the effects... The documentary is quite emotional at times entwined with the dramatic instrumental music (which I think is beautiful), I can see so much work has been put into it, from the little detail on the intro credits etc., to the animation you did from the cut outs and shadows I remember you showed a while back. All of your and your team's hard work has been put into this, it's truly stunning and I can't wait for more. It was worth the wait. Thank you for giving us this insight into this.

' do you remember? You know why? Because not a good question, they didn't understand him as they didn't get much education, should explain more, such as 'Do you like tall girl with long hair? Or short hair? Round face or oval face? Something like this, I mean more details for them easy to understand. Haha thank you much for all the good words. About the scene you mention - it's there for a good reason. This exchange highlights the clash between Kinh people and the ethnic groups of the region. There's a lot of distrust between the highland and lowland people, a general lack of understanding. Many Kính look down on minority groups as somehow backwards, stupid or uncultured. And when politically, economically and in other ways the Hmong and other groups are taken advantage of by the Kính, then all this clearly creates animosity. This was a very simple moment - boys were just shy to speak about romance with strangers. But how this exchange went down reveals a lot about larger issues in play.

I’m Hmong American, thank you for sharing! Seems like you had a lot of people on your team that weren’t as passionate about the film as you. I feel like from my own experience and researching about Hmong history every country we are in, we are in poverty and abused like the Jews. Then the successful Hmong become selfish and forget where they came from. I’m grateful for my clear perception of reality and the gifts god has given me.

Totally fascinating film. So well shot, great graphics and so sad in places. I've lived in Vietnam over 3 years and been to Meo Vac and Dong Van several times this year and ridden through Khau Vai twice. I had no idea about the Love Market until randomly finding this on RU-vid after watching documentaries about different ethnic tribes. The people of Ha Giang province are always so welcoming. I hope to be there next year for this festival. Looks wonderful. Ps Alicia the production manager is gorgeous! :)

According to the October 2, 2016 Psychology Today "Humans Are Genetically Predisposed to Kill Each Other" article: "In part, the reasons for this rampant self-killing appear to relate to our big brains and the conscious awareness and conniving that big brainpower makes possible, but primarily because of two other key aspects of Homo sapiens and other primates: fierce territoriality and living in social groups."
