Excellent and elegant solution. The iterative process is underused today. Too many people want to think/design a solution to perfection. Unfortunately, you often fail to think of ALL problems that will arise.

Watching video on the couch with my girlfriend: "that looks like some kind of Schrader valve" (10 seconds later I walk out of the room like a champion)
@Apismeliffera

At 5:35 "This Little Do-Dad". Well that's half of a Schrader valve. The other half being the Valve Stem. The part on display is the Valve Core.

Nice solution for two avian litho-targets. The battery door issue seems to be endemic to Canon over the last several years (really the only thing I don't like about either of mine). My solution was to make a new quick mount with the mount screw offset sideways. Oh, by the way... designing spring detents that work is hard. Your initial trial might have been ideal for the final product, though a bit less elegant than you finished with. It gave one reliable detent.

Hi Wesley , I think your the only non woodworking maker I watch, another great video, with foot/shoe as it was square you could have put a flat springy thing on the edge and did the wasp sting you , keep up the good work ,G.

Possible 'solution' for forgetting to turn the microphone around, put a big visible eye-catch on the back of the microphone, like half of a tennis ball or just paint it red. If you can see it, hopefully it'll draw your attention enough that you'll notice and act on it. I don't want to use the term 'ugly', but if you make the wrong side ugly you're likely to think about it rather than just seeing it, and if you think about it you're likely to act on it.

Btw I know this is a few years old, but for whatever vlog setup you’re currently using, I would recommend the Deity d4 duo microphone. It’s a shotgun mini mic with mic on front AND back specifically for this purpose. Also, I would look at getting a camera cage that’s made for your model camera. Like a small rig or tilta or kondor blue brand cages. They allow for battery changeout and have several 1/4-20 mounting points all the way around. Hope that helps!

I'm thinking tiny neodymium magnets for the detents might have worked.

Why not just have a detent hole on both sides and let the ball travel between the 2?
@WesleyTreat
@WesleyTreat 6 лет назад
It just wasn't reliable. Plus, the ball was traveling, but not rolling, so it was gradually scratching a groove into the aluminum, which would've become another problem.

Canon design dept. has gone to the dogs in the last ~5-6 years. They make major ergonomics boo-boos indicative of inexperienced engineers spending too much time filling out FMEA-spreadsheets and not having the clout to get the design-basis right.

Hey Weasley, what lens do you have on your EOS?
@WesleyTreat

It's an EOS M3 with the EF-M 18-55 kit lens from my EOS M. I also sometimes use the adapter below if I want to stick on one of my good lenses (which I only do if I know I won't be doing something that will endanger it). amzn.to/2OBrzhP
