Touring one of two Lucille Ball dressing rooms at the former Desilu-Gower studios; now part of the Paramount lot in Hollywood. (Originally RKO Studios 1928-1957) Desilu-Gower 1957-1967 Desilu was formed in 1950
I Love Lucille Ball. Very cool video! It's amazing that the bathroom is all original, I hope they preserve it, keeping it just the way it is. Lucy didn't like when decor changed, she liked the familiar at home and at the office.
I worked at Paramount in the mid to late 80's. They were in the process of 'modernizing' buildings and sound stages. I saw many of the old RKO-Desilu props being trashed and even grand pianos cut to pieces with chain saws. I also knew several people who worked at the studio during Desilu days and heard some great stories.
Great post! Not only is this interesting it is a very nice sentiment for those like myself who "love Lucy" . I lived in an apartment very similar to that and I loved it! Smaller is the way to go! It would be a true statement to say that Lucy and Desi shaped American television and delivered everlasting quality and "genuine to be remembered " TV shows that will ever be produced!
Thank you for posting this video. It gave me goose bumps when you said- "imagine the great hands that have touched this faucet" . It felt as if I were there.
I never dreamed these dressing rooms still exist. Ginger and Lucy? Wow, remember their 1937 film Stage Door with the Great Kate and so many others. Many thanks for the tour. Any more?
Aww, June 1, 2009. This was done on my 30th birthday! This would've been a wonderful birthday gift... If I hadn't come across it two years later! LOL! This was a great piece of history. I'm a frustrated performer as well as a history lover, so this was definitely fulfilling! Thanks!
It needs tremendous research to make it look like it did when Lucy occupied it. As it is in this video, there is nothing interesting about it to merit showing to the public. It's rather bland and sterile.
Thanks very much! This video helped me bring closure to what was inside. I toured the backlot in June 2006 and of course all we got was a quick look at the exterior. Well Done. Can you do more videos on other spots like this at this studio or others, that would be very interestin.
Lucy kept a great many props, costumes etc.. sometimes she would donate items for auctions.. but in the early 80's she would have moving trucks bring many items to the UCLA film and television archive to the Westwood Campus..
I was intrigued to see the bathroom with the pink and black tiles. My mother's and father's bathroom has that same tile built around the late 50's when Lucy used this dressing room.
My aunt's bathroom, in a house that was built around that same time, I swear had the same kind of soap holders and towel holders that there are in Lucy's bathroom. How curious and nice to see that. This video is just great.
@537garfield I know, right?!! I thought the exact same thing. Very cool that the hair washing contraption is still there and I'd like to imagine that the elaborate shower set up was used by someone we all would recognize. Thank you sooooo much for sharing!!!
I love your voice haha, it cheered me up, this video makes me sad but happy. Sad because of the history that sort of has been ruined. But happy because I can picture all the great moments that happened there!
i was at universal studios right after she finished filming the lucy show and she had her own bungalow, which was filled with pics of her kids and gold handled hairdressing station.. not a room in a row house...
Lucy's dressing room at Universal was part of the tour. The tour would de-board the trams and everyone would walk through her dressing room. Edith Head's bungalow next door was also a walk through. This was in the 1970's and I don't think either dressing room/bungalow was occupied. Universal is about to demolish the sound stage where they filmed Here's Lucy in the early 70's. More Hollywood history lost.
Lucy's bungalow at universal along with Edith head's... Were located in At the bottom of the Hill where the great escalator lets people off to ride Jurassic park and all the other rides
I know that bathroom sink isn't that vintage. It's a designer model from the early 1970s. It was probably installed there as it closely matched the bathroom. The tile work is mid 1930s to 1940s. This is one super cool video! Very nice work.
There is so little art education and enlightenment of good taste today based on what the main stream media presents. The "grunge" trash "culture" has had a lot to do with this lowering of aesthetic standards.
Is Desi's office still there? Years ago I saw a DVD that had a video he had done from his office for Desilu employees and there was also a video for the Westinghouse dealers (that featured Desi, Lucy, William Frawley and Vivian Vance) that showed his office and her dressing-room.
Do any of the original furniture set pieces from I love Lucy exist? I met someone who claims to have the original desk lamp from the Ricardo's Manhattan apt. He is a collector and has many other pieces. I just haven't heard of others.
Why don't they use it for an employee as a micro apartment? Rent is high and the time it takes to commute would save a person a lot of time and money, not to mention the noise and pollution a car puts out on the environment.
@@mgmbacklot It was such a pretty dressing room. If it is elsewhere, that is good. We plan to go to the Lucille Ball Museum some day when we are again allowed to travel. Thanks for the information.
When I LOVE LUCY began, they leased a stage at General Service Studios. Desilu acquired RKO in 1957 towards the end of the original I LOVE LUCY series. By this time the show was expanded to the hour format, which was filmed at the old RKO facility.
Who was she really along with all the others so sad ws the book about all of early years true. Full service read it same as 21st century betty Davis made a comment back in the day . Quote slept with everyone but lassie what's different?
