Okay now this is strange. Just an hour ago I was searching for LM1 vs LM3 comparison videos and there was nothing. Then I check my Subscription page and up pops this one!

I feel like atmospheric wise, the first one is far superior, the third one just doesnt have that same tense feeling or eeriness. Something about the silence, even from the lit rooms, just makes it so much better

Luigi's Mansion 3 in terms of gameplay is a great expansion of the concepts presented in the first game and objectively a less repetitive game. However, it's missing the uniquely dark and ominous atmosphere of the first game, which was what made it memorable to me. The first game felt like a kid-friendly survival horror game. This does not most of the time.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 is actually so damn good, I love the attention to detail in the game and every single floor has completely unique themes and puzzles, no filler whatsoever

One thing I wish they would change is the design of the ghosts. They look too child-like, I want the OG ghosts

Luigi's Mansion 3 is my favorite because each floor was so different, they had their own music even when sucking up ghost. It had a impressive number of interesting and challenging bosses. The game is just filled with clever puzzles as well, It just has way more to offer. I had just as much fun if not more fun exploring in this game AND it is over double the length.

Luigis mansion 1 had better spooky elements, sound design, score, and overall charm. For me, Luigis mansion 1 is one of Nintendo’s best games ever made.

Luigi’s Mansion 1 gave you the genuine creeps that hasn’t been the same...I was genuinely anxious playing the first game. The third one is better overall and less repetitive though.

All 3 Luigi's Mansion Games are amazing in their own way. Personally, I am a Dark Moon kind of Luigi's Mansion Fan. But I cannot deny that the original is still alot of fun to play. It is a crying shame that most of the nostalgic Luigi's Mansion Fans cannot take off their nostalgia goggles and enjoy the Third or Dark Moon and respect them for the stuff they did right. Dark Moon gave us pretty amazing music, yes it was mission based, but the idea was to play it at your own pace. It also gave us King Boo with his design that honestly makes him an very intimidating villain. the Third improves it, and heck the 3ds remake uses the Dark Moon Design because the original made King Boo look goofy as heck. Yeah, the original gave us Portrait Ghosts that had unique personalities, however I do feel that King Boo didn't even have to do any of what he did to get Mario and Luigi trapped. He could have easily solved his problems by doing what he did in Luigi's Mansion 3, trap Egad in a Painting after releasing all of the Portrait Ghosts, who basically were not hostile and were living their lives. You feel more like a villain in the original than King Boo himself. And maybe that is because I first played Dark Moon, which is not true, I attempted to play the original, and gave up because I couldn't figure the controls early on. I ended up replaying around a year ago, and I personally find it an alright game, and that I do prefer Dark Moon for all the stuff it did. Heck, Luigi's Mansion 3's Dark Light Device being infinite is kinda annoying because you can just spam it so easily, and I liked the limit it had to add for strategy. The Boo's in Dark Moon are honestly the best in the series, in terms of combat, although you cannot admit, Luigi's Mansion 3's Boo's have some very clever music choices. Especially if you find them, or fail to find them. But If I had to rate my Luigi's Mansion Games in order from favorite to least, 1: Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon 2: Luigi's Mansion 3 3: Luigi's Mansion But I like all 3 games, and I've got all 3 games on my channel. You can easily find it by looking at my name and checking out my playlists.

So far LM3 has a surprisingly good atmosphere. I do miss the quietness of the original and I'd prefer seeing it again, especially with the creepier designs, but for what 3 is, it's not bad at making me on edge when I'm playing in the dark.

i miss the eerie soundtrack and the generally spookier feel of the original, i wish they would have made this gamer a bit more suspenseful/spooky especially with the music. i'd also like to have the option to play the super catchy original theme

The new one is too childish and happy pretty much like a Mario game, the original had the great spooky atmosphere

I think nintendo should remaster 1 and 2 and put it on switch this is my first go with the series and when I saw the virtual boy I almost die laughing great nostalgia moment for me

While the atmosphere and ambiance of the original is lost in the triquel, it stills sets out what it’s suppose to do. To rally up ghosts, solve puzzles, and find Mario. I kinda miss the gothic themes of the original, but Nintendo wanted to go to a different direction with this game and I totally respect that. Looking forward to getting this game, let’s hope Luigi Mansion 1 remastered and Dark Moon come to switch as well!

I love the dark atmosphere in the original, but I also love the charm and humor in the newer titles. I honestly can’t decide which one I like more, they are both absolutely amazing.

When it comes to ambience and atmosphere, the first wins. 3 mostly has a cartoonish style which, while I don’t mind, it is makes you forget that you’re in a haunted building. It feels like you’re in a carnival ride rather than a haunted building that tries to kill you. Still, I love the third game. It’s so fun to play.

Luigi's Mansion 3 is so beautiful. It's probably the best looking Nintendo game so far, with its lighting, details, and cutscenes.

Luigi's Mansion 3 has definitely impressed me, but I have one small complaint that makes a huge difference imo: And that's that you can't truly clear a room. In the original, once you took care of all the ghosts, the lights in a room would turn on and by the end of the game, you had this satisfaction of walking through the completely lit up mansion. But in 3, there's no clear difference when a room is finished, and basic ghosts randomly spawn back in to rooms you've visited before. And I hate that imo

What do you mean, the bosses are simpler? In this game, they all have a defined back-and-forth with mechanically superior strategies, and the harder bosses are just as frequent as in the original game.

Great comparison. I’d only disagree on the Floor Ghosts vs Portrait Ghosts. The portrait ghosts often were sitting idly in a room where you’d need to solve a single-step puzzle to make them “catchable” at which point the suction process was the same as always. And while you had four main bosses here in the original (Chauncey, Bogmire, Boolossus and King Boo), here you have many more: starting with the pianist and then the caveman. But once you get to either the Shark or the Egyptian lady, all fights til the final boss have combat is so complex that they could be compared to the main four bosses of the original. And while it may seem like you don’t need to “finish a puzzle” in the same room to start the fight like you used to, in most cases you have to solve an overarching puzzle comprised of smaller ones through the whole floor - to then start the fight. Escaping the pyramid catacombs to kick off the encounter, retrieving the director’s megaphone, finding the right key to the guard’s room, etc...

GCN: Graphics look amazing for the time, especially after just upgrading from the N64. 3DS: Luigi is able to emote and the detail looks more crisp Switch: This game is gorgeous in HD and the characters have proper facial movements

The dust thing not being in Luigis Mansion 3 is kinda a nitpick considering there were other things like sand and smoke that you could’ve vacuum up to show the effect. Other than that this is a good vid

I remember there being a reference to the first game's "intro" in the 3rd game; When Luigi opens the door to the room that contains E. Gadd in his painting, it looks a lot like when Luigi enters the mansion in the first game; He even says "Hello" when he opens doors in the third game, similar to the intro in the first game as well when Luigi opens the Mansion's front doors

If you haven't seen dust in LM3 then you haven't vacuumed and explored enough shelves and crevices. I explore everything and sometimes there's a huge dust cloud that pops out from drawers and such and causes Luigi to cough until he vacuums it away.

One thing I haven't seen anyone mention yet, is how in LM1 the rooms would be dark until you cleared them. In LM3 they are always either, and ghosts can still respawn in cleared rooms which is pretty annoying. Also I miss the funky animation where Luigi picked up keys/gems in LM1, which is something they could've easily brought back :((

Low-key wanna buy a switch just to play this game

Just got my copy of this game yesterday. I thought about watching a comparison video when I got up this morning and then this shows up in my recommended list, lol.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 is so freaking good. I get that people preferred the darker ambience, but this game has it too, it’s just crisper. It’s a delight, and I hope none of you are so put off by how it differs from 1 that you hate it altogether.

As someone who has played all three for the first time recently, I think LM3 and Dark Moon are the better games. The first one is still great but I feel like some people give it too much credit and not enough credit to the sequels.

There is some implementation of dust physics in LM3, as in when Luigi opens drawers and a cloud of dust bursts out.

Dude. I remember the first time I layed eyes on Luigi's mansion and super smash brothers melee. I just couldn't believe that their clothes looked so realistic. And now we have all this new stuff. It's crazy.

The Original LM had the best Atmosphere. And the scariest.

There seems to be a bit more originality and authenticity to the 2002 original.

I still find it weird they named it Luigi's Mansion 3. Should've given it a subtitle like Dark Moon. Would've fit better.

that LM1 is more frightening does not mean that it is the best in the saga by definition ... The atmosphere is only an aesthetic aspect that does not assess the quality of a Luigi's Mansion.

Ok look I love LM 1 and it does have it's unique atmosphere but if you've played through LM3 you'll come to realize that it's just far superior in every way. If you just like the first one more because it's spookier then that's fair but the lighting.atmosphere and design are all just much more fleshed out and interesting in 3. (Not to mention the variety alone) *edit* Also I gotta disagree completely with the whole boss thing,they have much more interesting mechanics and actual fights in the original you just did one minor thing tho expose their hearts (which were usually pretty obvious) and then you sucked them up there wasn't that much to them.

Nothing beats the first game. It was way more eerie while walking through the mansion and the ghosts were way louder and way more sudden. And Luigi would hum along which I miss.

Luigi's mansion was fantastic for its time but 3 is on another level..what the switch is doing with lighting and physics is really impressive..

This game had 2 of the major art branches, the pianist ghost and the theater ghost and the cinema ghost and this was their biggest opportunity to bring back Van Gore as a visual arts AND THEY TOTALLY BLEW IT!

The 3rd game was my first time playing a Luigi's Mansion game and when first got on Christmas day I played it, and I was so invested in the story and game play that I finished it the next day, I feel like Luigi's Mansion 3 is a perfect game, but when I play the first one on my 2ds I'll see for myself how good it is

LM3 would be the best if only it had the same atmosphere and ghost design of the first game. Comedic relief is good occasionally in a game, but making EVERY single ghost a comedic character really downgrades the eerie ness and ambience.

The first Luigi Mansion is always going to be the best , but Luigi Mansion 3 not trying to ruffle no feathers but I still stand with what I say, but it's very reminiscent to Darkmoon.

I still think Luigi's Mansion 1 is the better game overall in terms of both gameplay structure & atmosphere, but I really love Luigi's Mansion 3 for what it is. It's easily one of my favorite Switch games. Luigi's Mansion 3 is such a HUGE improvement over Dark Moon. To me LM3 is what Dark Moon should've been. Not to say Dark Moon is a bad game, it's fine for what it is, but compared to LM1 & LM3, I say Dark Moon is easily the worst in the series. The mission based structure really ruined the pacing in that game.

I was hoping you would cover camera differences in the 2 games. At 0:25 you can see the original game shifted the camera to a more overhead view as soon as Luigi starting sucking up a ghost. This helped the player with depth perception and knowing exactly the direction to pull. The new game doesn't do anything like this as far as I can tell, though the camera does vary for certain rooms and bosses. But I feel like usually its angle is too low to the ground, and this contributes to players having a harder time seeing what's going on in LM3's larger rooms (especially if they're playing handheld). Camera placement/design is so overlooked in 3D games. It can totally make or break the experience

I doubt imma get scared playing LM3 and I’m halfway through. LM1 had me trembling a good 5 times and the first had to be... maybe the musician with her instruments of doom. Then granny with the yarn the old man “hiding” in front of a mirror :| before the first balcony Those wind up toys!!! 😩 And the sudden piano mashing horror music that started playing after the fortune teller revealed her final foresight like.... wtf. My mind wasn’t prepared for any of that

I disagree with you saying that LM3 looks "darker". OG LM has the best aesthetic in terms of darkness levels and texture which obviously makes it more realistic and spooky. Why do I need a flash light if I can already see almost everything in the room? Also the overall atmosphere of the original is far superior. I think you praise LM3 a little too much but good comparison overall. I could nitpick a lot more about LM3 but it is a pretty decent game. Of course these are just my subjective opinions.

Even though I like a lot of the aspects of the new game, there is something about the original that I think makes it the best in the series. The theme and the mood were darker, the art style felt strangely realistic for a mario game, the dust particles made everything feel oddly old despite the mansion being new (in story), and the boss ghosts had intriguing backstories. Not to mention the music which set the tone that this was a farcry from your typical Mario game. I feel that the new art style, theme, music, and mood are too cartoony which makes it lose the dark charm that the original had. The lack of ghost biographies I feel was Nintendo being lazy, and the lack of variety in the minor ghosts like the original feels lazy as well. The original stands out in my mind because it was such a dark contrast from typical mario games and helped established Luigi as his own character.

I remember being scared shitles by the first game. The 3rd just doesnt have that same feel or tone. The first will always be the best hands down.

"Making for a more believable experience" Its Luigi, sucking up ghosts with a vacuum cleaner... No amount of believable shadowing will fix that.

The new ghosts seem to reflect light, which gives them parts of their body which are illuminated by environmental light and other parts which are shaded. I think this effect makes them less "ghostly" than in the original game.

Feels like a big issue with 3 is encounters are very locked down, in one you could enter ghost areas and normally leave as you pleased except for a few scenarios

I like the improved graphics, but I prefer the characters/stories/puzzles of the ghosts from the first game. That really makes the game still so much fun to play. Even after almost 20 years.

I wish they brought back even more of the style of ghosts and the building from the original and even the sound of getting a key from the original instead of dark moon but what they did make was good

I liked lm 3, I just wish they would go back to the old synth instruments, and the og dark visuals. Also, discriptions of the boss ghosts like in lm 1 would be nice

@Nick930 I have thought of a great direct comparison you could do if you ever played Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis. That was a fantastic game for its time, and there is a newer version called Jurassic Park World Evolution. It's a theme park style game, but with Jurassic Park.

Luigi’s mansion 3 is more refined and polished in certain aspects. However, the original created an atmosphere that far surpasses LM3. This unique atmosphere allowed for deeper immersion and made the original distinctively memorable.
