oh, I forgot: if you look up south africa's space agency or something, you will only find telescopes built on the ground. not even satelite launches

Technology demostration, samples from a new place, updated topography, a sismometer... There's a lot of unmanned stuff to do on the moon. :)

astropapi1 Yes,you have some good points.Other countries are "updating topography".The US has already placed seismometers at just about every Apollo mission.They worked long and hard to get a lot of data.NASA is still working with the data from them.The only thing left would be new samples from the moon and we collected almost 1,000 pounds.But I agree with you,quite a lot to done.But I also think that we should have a permanent base on the moon and a space station between the moon and Mars.We have done small stuff such as of the shuttle.I'm glad we did make a working shuttle but price ver real science I feel like we never got a huge return for the amount of money invested.

astropapi1 Why? Everything NASA did were pretty logical steps, and ESA hasn't done most of the things NASA did. ESA wants to do manned space exploration, and they have little experience with that. It makes sense to send robotic probes everywhere, also ESA's done things NASA hasn't. Orbiting a comet, and soon landing on one, studying Saturn in detail, their Mars probes didn't do the same things NASA's did either.

Pretty sure it burned a bunch then got the velocity to keep swinging around and do a planetary assist. It only had to do small burns and when it got there it just had to do a capture burn. Apollo went into orbit and burned until they had a trajectory to intercept the moon.

It wouldn't. The moon precesses, so if you land near the terminator between the near and far hemisphere, you might see Earth going under the horizon and popping back up.

The orbit of the moon is neither completely circular nor is it on the ecliptic (that is the plane of the Earth's orbit around the sun). This means that during the month (while the Moon is orbiting the Earth), the Earth will look as though it dips below the horizon from the vantagepoint of the Lander (given that it has landed on the South pole of the Moon).

I agree with your observation. Earth should be rotating but not dipping on the horizon as shown here.

+JPQed The Earth makes 29 full rotations + some change, for every 1 lunar orbit. It's the Moon that's tidally locked, not the Earth. But, ... you're talking about the Earth moving across the Lunar Sky maybe? hmmmm that ... I think you're right lol ESA messed that part up! Also they need to fire the gfx programmer that put in the land masses on the Earth too.

That is far to logically frugal to ever get approval. Even with the sentimental value of setting up a permanent manned base on the moon where there is already 'transport' and history, i still don't think it is worth going to the moon unless the mission is to make a permanent base, in which case a new site and multipurpose and huge range rover would be required. The rover would need to use the outside mounted spacesuit design that allows the people to drive around and camp out in T shirts and shorts. It would also want to be able to dock with the moon base, all this seems to hard to bother doing unless it was on Mars.
