Lure hook eyes, how strong if glued?

How strong are lure hook eyes? Well we tested lure screw eyes and twist eyes without glue and the results were a bit surprising. Here I test twist eyes that are glued into the "lure body" and the results are pretty much what you might have expected.

I made my first swimbait tonight. Back in the day I was a drone mechanic in the military and learned how to safety wire. They use it to combat vibration on aircraft. Came in handy to make hook eyes.

@@EngineeredAngler I enjoy watching what you do, your explanations and discussions do not take away from the videos, it adds to it. Another thing to consider would be that lures usually get coated with resins/ epoxy clear coats. Often multiple coats are applied, do you think this adds to the force that would be required to pull the twist eye/wire form?
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 5 лет назад
unfortunately the clear coat adds almost zero to the pull out strength of the hook eye. Given the nature of the failure mode..bonding rupture. Look at it this way; the added thickness of the clearcoat is like lengthening the twist eye the thickness of the clear coat...a quarter of a mm, maybe.

Amazing video! I carwed a few crankbait from pine wood for wels catfish. I was afraid to use these twist wire hook hangers on them, because they are not recommended for wels. but after this video I do not. I epoxied them 4 cm deep in the lure. I lifted 20 liters of fater in a bucket one of the lures, and the hookhanger not moved. My biggest catfish was about 50 kg. Whit the epoxy you used, I may could lift it off the ground. So I give it a try.

I have found that by leaving one side of the twist slightly longer and then forming a 'V'' with it that once you've pushed it in, then it self grips to an extent. This seems to have added a considerable amount aditional strength to the glue fixing. Great video as usual, thanks.

Thanks for doing this test! So in exploring options, it looks like a shorter shank (say 1/2") epoxied in would still be way stronger than necessary - good to know for smaller lures. Funny, in looking for the weakest link nobody seems to consider the rod itself - a typical (fresh water) rod is hard pressed to lift a couple of pounds. Think that the average rod (held at 90 degrees to the pull) would probably break before the line it is spooled with.
@EngineeredAngler

Good info........ besides the knot, I always thought the split ring was the next weakest link...........the #2 saltwater rings I use on my lures has a printed test on the package of 20lbs. Less than half the 50lbs the test of the super glued eyes in the vid.

Exactly.. the best way to go is knowing the rig your fishing: reel, rod, line and terminal tackle. Here's a little Insider trick, if you put a couple of drops of crazy glue in the barrel twist you'll get an extra 20 percent strength. Just finished doing some testing with that ... You're the first to know.

Awesome test and video. I epoxy mine in but mine could definitely be longer sometimes. And i don't know just how much glue is getting deep down in there, as my holes are pretty snug on the twist-eyes already. But still, more than good enough for lake fishing. Although, we do get into lakers in the mid 30 lbs, so that's salmon sizes now, which, i guess i should ensure a solid eye. Another curious test, is when does a treble barb start to straighten. On salmon and cod, we sometimes get a barb that has began to open
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 5 лет назад
One of the benefits of putting twist eyes instead of screw eyes is that the twist tend to carry the glue in along with it where the threads on a screw eye tend to sort of squeegee It off as it threads in. I think that if you can get a 150 lb holding power with an inch and a quarter embedment you can pretty much reel in most any fish you'll find in a lake. Thank you for the comment and kind words

Here's the deal on the material strength of of these resins: the manufacturers give you the breaking strength of the resins in PSI and that's using a straight tensile strength test. That does not directly apply to how we use it. When we load these resins holding screw in eyes, they will fail in shear. So don't put too much impprtance on what the label is claiming . Typically, higher strength resins take a longer time to develop that strength. So if you're hooking up awesome giant stripers in the surf use a resin that has a longer set time. Thanks you for the engagement.

I've noticed over the years, with application other than baits, that superglue is unreliable over time. It seems that at some point, that high strength glue joint often lets go much later on. Glue joints just fall apart. I don't know why and I don't know if epoxy does too. Any info about that.
@EngineeredAngler

AC glue (super glue) is weird stuff..it sometimes fakes you out with what appears to be solid adhesion but...not really. It does not do well with heat and is brittle while tending to expand and contract with heat, not a good combination. I use it mostly for non critical elements and temporary connections. Epoxy is slower, more flexible and more thermally stable. ..but nothing is forever... .I'm always looking for ways to combine glue with some mechanical friction to improve the odds. Great question. ..thanks

Thank you! I happened to stumble upon a video after I posted this question about a woman who accidentally made flexible epoxy. She was using 90% isopropanol alcohol in a spray bottle to thin some paint she splattered on the epoxy. When the epoxy hardened it was flexible. She then later mixed 1/4 ounce to 1 ounce epoxy just to see how it would turn out. It ended up working. I think I'm going to try to use a brush how you make a tail and then pour epoxy over the top of it and see how that works out

Hi there, you mentioned using 5 min epoxe... Years ago I used to use the quick cure stuff but have since gone to the longer cure stuff. The reason being that I found the 5 min would degrade over time after exposure to the elements, whereas the longer cure epoxe would hold up way better... Have you found this to be true at all?

@paulrichards1921
@paulrichards1921 5 лет назад
The lure can fail over time. The holding load is only part of it. When catching a fish, you are putting a strain on the hook hanger during the duration of the fight. The fish is not just pulling in one direction for the whole fight, it may dart in one direction, then another. In time, after catching many fish and snags, the glue may fail. Super glue is a very poor solution, since it bonds poorly with metal. Epoxy does not bond with the metal either, but will bond with the wood and create a very strong shell around the hook hanger. Next try 2 ton epoxy, or stronger. The difference is tremendous.

I know this was 2 years ago, but star bond makes a thick super glue and it works amazingly well. It makes a shell of super glue all the way around the hook hanger

Just a pointless video in my opinion. I don't even twist the wires together the legs are parallel, and is forced into a hole that is sized for a tight fit that creates compression when assembled. I key the wire legs by using side cutters to make indentations along the wire. This works fine for up to 50lb tackle. Super glue is really only suitable for purely tensile applications. The way the forces are distributed in a lure situation its always going to be weaker than epoxy. Any flexing forces over time will weaken it progressively, so how it measures in a 1 off controlled situation does not tell the real story. And just as a side note there's a certain very well known American bass lure company that uses screw eyes into plastic and they pull out at 10 Lbs!. But there's still been a lot of fish caught on them. So yeah, measuring screw eyes with hundreds of pounds of strength doesn't really teach me anything I didn't know by experience and instinct. If I was making poppers to fish for GTs with 80lb braid, then yes, I'd bother doing the full twisted leg routine.
@EngineeredAngler
@EngineeredAngler 2 года назад
I have caught 4 oz crappie and 400lb hammer head sharks, there's a rig and a desired strength for each application. Sorry you didn't find this useful but, let me know what you would like to see. Thank you for the feed back. Cheers.
