Which ultralight tent is best in bad weather? The hexpeak v4a and the lanshan 2 are very different tents in terms of design and build quality. But both have their strengths and their weaknesses - which becomes very apparent when you pitch them on less than ideal ground in strong winds and heavy rain.
The weather forecast was predicting stormy conditions - so I thought it would be an interesting day to test my luxe hexpeak v4a tipi tent against the ultralight 3f ul gear lanshan 2. My main aim was to find out which tent I'd trust more for wildcamping in inclement conditions or for sudden changes in weather whilst on the mountains with my dog.
As you can see in my other videos, wild camping can go very wrong and it's in those moments that you need to know that your camping equipment can handle difficult conditions and keep you safe.
This test was designed to a) see how the tents handle the rough conditions and b) how they compare to each other. I’d fully recommend that you try something similar with your kit; learn its strengths, weaknesses and limitations in a safe location so that you are prepared for any sudden changes in the weather or mistakes made in the field.

Interesting video pal. In my personal experience the Lanshan 2 (pro) stands better in high winds when the doors are facing the wind side + reducing the trekking pole height to get lower on the ground that less wind is getting 'under' it. Still impressive so from my point of view how well the Lanshan stood up in such an exposed spot, rather loose pitched😃. For sure not a match for the hex but from my point of view it doesn't need be 👍 ATB Stripey

Hi mate, aye, you’re right, but as I’ve said on other comments, it was purely an experiment based on real world conditions/ground in poor weather (as though the weather had changed) to see how both would compare. To be fair, the Lanshan did stay standing, but even due to the wind noise I wouldn’t bother taking it 🙃 We’ll see how long it takes for you to leave the Scarp at home and take the Lanshan instead 😁😅

@@outlawedlandscapes hahaha was just thinking that. Difficult in the current weather mate, couldn't imagine the Lanshan during my last wild camps - even borderline in the Scarp for me personally. The biggest advantage for the Lanshan for me is the price/weight/pack size/ living space and pitching + putting away time. I don't like it less than the Scarp 1 to be honest, just a different tent for a different purpose/weather conditions. I think the major problem with tents in general is that people (including me) are looking for a jack of all trades which is probably even not existing!? ATB Stripey

Aye, I'm sort of the same. I go out for photography, so I need something that it light, packable, large for me and Coops, easy up & down and something that will keep us safe / happy when the weather invariably changes. The Lanshan ticks most of those boxes, but not the last, I've been through that and I'm not willing to let it happen again - thus the Hexpeak. So far, it has proven to be a bit of an excellent all rounder tbh, which is really suprising. At the end of the day though, as you said, it's a tool for a job. No doubt when it's roasting outside in the summer, the Hexpeak will be like a sauna xD

Excellent video. Well done. I also like how you showed difference between the tents in high winds. Being in a secure place in gale force winds is enough, couldnt imagine being stuck up a mountain. I know some people think watch youtube and they are away. Had a friend who headed to scotland for 250 mile cape wrath trail. He managed a couple of days before returning home....

Haha, oh dear! Well, at least he gave it a shot, as long as he was safe 👌 Was it just a bit much for him at the time? Aye, being on a mountain in challenging conditions is always harder because there is an added sense of dread created by being what feels so far away from what you're used to (four walls etc). After my tent ripped on Arran, I vowed to test everything so there's less risk in the future 🙂 Thank you for watching!

Lanshans aren't easy setting up to begin with so I can' imagine trying to go that in such windy conditions. I have the same exact L2 in white. I love the tent, but in the wind, I can't say that I would love it either. With the conditions that you live in, your other tent looked much more durable over time. The L2 is a nice budget tent, that you have to seam seal, for less windy climates. ~RVA~

@@outlawedlandscapes They are all the same material until you switch over to the pro which is a 4 season tent, versus a 3 season tent. 2 person size is perfect for me, so I have space for gear. I couldn't go smaller.

The size is incredible in the LS2, the white is also very airy feeling which is nice 🙂 The pyramid tent should shed wind a lot better than the LS2 or even the pro version - the 2 needs a few more tie out points IMO, but then it’s not designed for the bad weather. It definitely has its place, just not in my rucksack 😊

I pitched my Lanshan 2 in these sorts of conditions last week. Thankfully I swapped the pegs for Delta ground anchors which made a massive difference. Without the delta anchors, I doubt I would have stayed on the hill. Great video. Wild camping realism! X

Thank god i found your channel subbed, i was seriously considering a Lanshan 2 pro tent Luke at outdoor gear reviews just did a review on it but thats for North American weather conditions. Which is fine for the moment but as a Scot in Canada the wind can be pretty fierce here also, so thanks for this review.

Hi Colin, welcome aboard! 😀 The Lanshans are excellent tents for benign conditions, but based on previous experiences that’s all I’d use one for! I’m in love with the Hexpeak and looking forward to some proper winter wild camping to see just how far I can push it!! 👀😁

Great video. You made clear the noise difference between the two tents as you should because, for many of us, noise promotes anxiety. Sleep is possible (for me) in a tent lashing about quietly but not in a noisy one. Pegging points are important, too. If a tent is well pegged, I can sleep. That is not the case when I am worried that the tent might fall over. You also mentioned stones under the turf. To deal with that kind of ground, I carry titanium nail pegs. My Trailstar is so big that half can be on rocks hidden by turf and half on a peat bog so I also carry V pegs because they grip well in peat. I’ve always liked the look of the Hex Peak. The issue is carrying it now that I am an OAP.

Thanks for watching! Yes, that was the intention, the noise difference between the two (granted the Lanshan was way looser) was incredible! I’m the same, a lot of flapping tells you that something isn’t quite right and you end up with a raised heart rate 😅 I use 9” nails for the Hexpeak’s 6 main points and they are an absolute game changer! If you’re used to the trail star, then the Hexpeak is very similar. It’s Flysheet is just under 700g and packs down very small 😊

Great Vid Outlaw, I do Bike touring, just back from 40 days in the saddle wild camping, i gave up on my two all singing and dancing ultralight tents that i owned for one reason, Strong winds, i was always having to nurse them by hiding them out the road of strong winds, defeated the purpose of looking out onto beautiful views, i went back to a tent i bought twenty years ago, a 70d terra nova solar, never let me down, can park it anywhere and been caught in two bad gales and stood up, but being a one man tent, no room to speak of, so it's the Minipeak xl for me, got me a little helinox ground zero chair and for the life of me cant understand why after 45 years of wild camping i haven't used one before, will be able to sit inside this tent in bad weather in comfort, i'm off to do the Wild Atlantic Way next June so will need it for the winds coming in off the Atlantic, Enjoying the Channel, keep me going through the winter, cheers Bud.

Hi mate, thanks for watching and I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! FINALLY someone has said it - "defeated the purpose of looking out onto beautiful views". I agree with your statements 100% and it's very much the same for me. I mostly camp for landscape photography, getting the sunset/sunrise and being able to camp in changeable conditions allows me to capture stunning elemental shifts (or not... haha!). I've yet to buy a chair, but I keep hearing about the helinox efforts and I'm intrigued - not just for camp comfort, but such a thing would allow for long periods of shooting out of the Hex with a long lens! How do you find the Minipeak? I'm hoping to acquire a 3rd party 4 season mid inner soon for some proper winter camping - see how the Hex fares in proper challenging weather 😁

@@outlawedlandscapes Landscape Photography, Used to have a Dark Room, mostly Medium format photography, you try lugging them up a Mountain lol, an Olympus Om1n was my preferred choice for that, went out every full moon and photographed the moon crowning different Mountains usually reflected in some body of water, was on top off a stack on Iona once when the full moon came up as the sun was setting, the moon in one eye and the sun in the other, felt like i was looking right into the face of Horus, your a young man, eat it up and enjoy it. My advice is clear, get a chair, the reason i went for the Helinox ground zero was the ergonomics, it's not a bucket seat that will dig into your legs after a while and you can stretch them out and lay back and weight of course. I'm only 5.7 and it's perfect for me, you look taller maybe check if taller people have used it. Suggestion for you have a look at a company 2 Go systems, they do bivvy bags that marry aluminum foil to Tyvek that makes the bags breathable so you don't sweat in them and trust me they work, lightweight and packs small, but as the photographer they do a Poncho, you can sit in your chair with the poncho completely covering you and the chair under the stars and no camp fire to for light pollution, they work big time, check them out when you get a chance, oh haven't got the Minipeak xl yet, about to, wish i had got it last year when i was going to, basically doubled in price as there status is going up, Ain't that the way😞 Best Wishes David.

Really good test. I love my lanshan but I had watched it just cave in in strong winds. There's very little to support the structure. Your hex peak looked solid throughout the entire video. I will have one someday. All the best for 2022 👍

Thanks for watching mate & Happy New Year to you! :) Aye, those panels are just way too big to support properly, even with the guy rope. They really need tie outs at the centre of the bottom seam just to help it out - but then it's not a bad weather tent. The hexpeak sticks like a limpet, honestly! Fantastic tents & I can't say it enough. You don't hear about them often, but just check the comments on my last few videos - lots of very, very satisfied owners :D

Thanks mate. I was thinking of pulling the trigger on the Lanshan but can't see it handling a stormy Cape Wrath trail. Can you add extra guys to the Hexpeak? I'm thinking Delta Anchors and extra guys and that thing would be bombproof.

Hi Laura! Thanks for commenting! What was the advert out of interest? We're all newbies at some point and if I can help you figure things out then I'm very happy. I'll try and sum it up for you based on these tents; the Lanshan 2 is very light and very spacious - but I'd only trust it on low level/sheltered camps. (see my 'lanshan destroyed' video!) The hexpeak, well, I haven't found conditions in which it doesn't excel yet! It's heavier than the Lanshan, but still very spacious and worth every gram in my opinion. You can also swap out the inner for the 3/4 season Lanshan/duomid inners which would save a couple of hundred grams. Hope this helps :)

When I was looking to buy the Lanshan, I heard nothing of its performance in the UKs climate; kind of an important factor 😅 I think maybe that’s why I’m so fixated on the whole Hexpeak/tent performance thing!

I have the hexpeak and its a great tent that i would definitely trust in these conditions. Just needs a longer pole as most walking poles dont reach the length required which from memory is 140cm

When i first bought my Duomid i likened it to having just met a gorgeous bird that i was madly in love with BUT she had a bit of baggage AND then when i got theL HP it was exactly the same feeling but this time no baggage and i can see us both being together until Death Do Us Part :) Another great video showing off the qualities of a fantastic tent ...price and weight and performance wise nothing compares in my opinion based on a few dozen tents that i have had in my time.

Haha 😄 I always heard that the Duomid is a solid tent, just way too expensive for me! I was camping up the Merrick last weekend and it was great (again). The chap I was with was quite impressed by how spacious it was and how well it pitched 👌🏻 Rising winds in the morning and the tent was silent 😅

Hex peak is my go to tent. It's amazing just how sturdy it feels in strong wind and I agree as each time I use it it I feel more confident with it's performance. Great comparison video 👍

I have both tents as well and like both, although neither are designed for high winds, no tent really is. Not sure about the way you've pitched the Lansham in this video, the walls should be taking the wind not the doors. You also need to lower the fly. What I do when it's windy is bring the trekking poles down about 10 cms and even lower the back door pole further. If mild to strong winds are predicted I also bring a stronger peg. Having camped in both tents in 30+mph winds I prefer the Lanshan 2. Both do flap around and although the Lanshan fly is lighter and flappier I've not had a wind rip on the fly. Unfortumately my Hexpeak suffered two nasty wind rips in medium to strong winds. Ultimately strong winds and storms equal AirBnB.

Hi Gareth, thanks for this! There are so many opposing opinions as to how the Lanshan should be pitched, whether it's doors or panels to the wind. This was an example of an imperfect pitch and how that affects overall performance, as if caught in bad weather you may not be able to get an optimal pitch if shelter is required. I'd be very interested to hear about your ripped Hex, because so far mine has been outstanding in bad weather - what were the circumstances that led to the damage!?

I've just bought a hexpeak f6a and it does feel like a solid design. I do have a Vango Chinook, which has beaten off 80 mph gusts like a pro, while being heavy for a 2 man tent, I can say it is bombproof, especially when bolstered by Delta pegs on the guys.

Still, if it's going to do a job and keep you safe then it's worth the extra effort. Thanks for watching! I’m not sure as the Lanshan doors are a pretty big weakness in the wind, plus the big panels are like sails 😅 All in all, the Lanshan 2 just isn’t made for these sort of conditions, whereas the Hexpeak excels! 💪🏻

Was gonna get a gossamer then a lanshan now the hexapeak.. Haven't gotten trekking poles so I like being able to just use one and I think the teepee looks pretty zen or whatever while offering better protection. Also versatile.. Might be a pound heavier but after breaking some ul gear I think I'll take it

The same happened to me, I assumed that the UL Gear would be up to the task for me, but I expected too much! The Hexpeak is a tank of a tent and isn't all that heavy - especially if you get a 3rd party (3f ul gear / asta) 3/4 season inner or bathtub!

Still, I like my Lanshans. Very lightweight, great headroom and super compact! But do not take them out in the wind. Ever. Sure I've seen some miraculously survive, but it was exactly that: a miracle. Good video mate.

Thanks Monty, nah, definitely not. This was just a real-world look at how it'd do because obviously living on the West Coast of Scotland, it is invariably windy/wet at some point when chasing interesting light/weather & I thought it'd be an interesting comparison. I love the space to weight ratio of the LS2, love the design, but it's not a bread and butter shelter at all unfortunately.

Good videos. Excellent to see. Good on you for being brave enough to test yourself and your kit. Ya win some and ya loose some and so in life. We all want the perfect tent, that will cope in a storm and is cheap and light weight.... Bit like looking for hens teeth.. So why not have some fun with it all. Love a good storm... can't beat camping in it... Carry on... Don't understand why people use rocks to bash pegs in. Got a miniature small hammer.. Very cheap and light. Seriously save the day on hard ground.

Hi Rich, thanks for watching! Aye, you're right. It's all fun at the end of the day, so I don't think folk need to be so anal about it all if it just ends up bothering them. Personally I just use rocks when it's hard/compact ground as the additional weight of a stake hammer isn't something I want to carry. Saying that, I almost bought the MSR hammer... haha!

I camped the hex peak on a super-windy mountain top of a mountain in Finland in winter, no problem, since around minus 20 C the nylon gets tuff like cardboard.

Whoa! Was that because it had stored water and frozen or just the way the nylon reacts in such low temperatures? The lowest I've camped on a summit is -15c, but that was with the Oex Phoxx 2. Every panel was a sheet of ice and my tripod was covered in beautiful hoar frost :D

I own a Lanshan single pole tent and have used it in winds half the forecast speeds you had and they were alright, but am never sure how much more it could take Having said that, my hope is that the single pole version has less surface area on its side and point that side to the wind won't catch as much of it

Hi mate, thanks for watching! I think the Lanshan 1 would perform better as you said, the geometry is better suited to deflecting the worst of the wind (that's why the Hexpeak is so successful). My recommendation would be to find a safe spot and put the tent to the test - that way you aren't wondering what it's capable of :)

The lanshan has won people over but it rubbish in wind, and as I found out hiking on chalk downs, impossible to pitch in hard earth. Thanks for switching me on to the hexpeak

Nice one Scott. As you know, I love my hexpeak but I also really rate my lanshan 1 pro (single pole), for summer due to its weight and simplicity. In wind, no comparison. Atb gordon.

Thanks for watching Gordon! The LS2 is the same, fantastic low weight but lots of space - however, space isn't generally an issue for me in summer as I'd only be sleeping 3-4 hours if at all! xD I do like the look of the LS1's - especially Kevin Russells 1.5p pyramid version!

Really good comparison, thank you. I summit camp all season and live in the far North of Scotland. My typical choice is fully geodesic, but you pay the price in weight. I am therefore looking for a sturdy lighter weight alternative for the summer season, and this video, along with some others you have done, have convinced me this might just be it.

Thanks Mike, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yes, the Hexpeak really is a fantastic shelter. The flysheet/tarp is very light and strong and the shape is excellent for deflecting winds. My only issue with the tent is that the 3 season inner (stock) is quite heavy, however, you can get 1 or 2 man 4 season inners from Aliexpress (like the lanshan) that weigh a lot less - so that's my plan for the future :)

@@KramF10 It’s actually pretty tight once pitched, the only two that I have bother with are the two front points. Best thing for them is simply two extra pegs/stakes, though I just move the aux tie outs to suit 👌🏻

Do you have a recommendation for a lighter 3 or 4 season inner. I’m heading towards buying the tent after a rough night on the Minigaig with the dog. Tent stayed up but it wasn’t really waterproof enough. Scotlands not a great place for mesh inners at the best of times

@@richardanderson9340 for the Hexpeak? I’d recommend getting a Lanshan 1 inner as they’re both lighter than the Luxe standard one. Based on measurements I reckon they’ll fit no problem 👌🏻

I've loved watching your videos on the hexpeak as I have one myself but just didn't know quite how robust it would be in strong winds and now I know I will probably have more confidence in camping in more exposed mountaines terrain, I love the floor space and headroom you get with the hexpeak, Cracking Channel Scott keep up the good work, ATB, Les.

Sorry, haha! 🤭 I would definitely recommend the Luxe Hexpeak v4a, I’ve got a few more videos about this tent on my channel (check “camping chaos” or “camping in the clouds” especially). The Tarptent Scarp 1 is also an excellent shelter, though is quite expensive. Definitely worth the investment though and something I’ll be buying in the future 👌🏻

@@torrentson Yes! That’s why I bought it after the Lanshan was ripped apart, my only issue with it is the stock inner is quite heavy, Lanshan inners are much lighter and will fit not problem though. We need inners here in Scotland because of the ticks and midges, otherwise I wouldn’t bother. The Hexpeak fly/tarp is only 700g

@@torrentson certainly. With a Lanshan inner you can get it down to 1kg-1.2kg though, and for the performance, it’s definitely a strong contender. The tipi design isn’t for everyone, but I can honestly say that the Hexpeak is an excellent shelter! 💪🏻

Great comparison, although the comparative tent geometry makes the result a bit of a forgone conclusion! I've spent many a windy night (and even a few windy days) inside my Hexpeak V4A, and I never cease to be impressed by its foul weather performance. Perhaps a closer comparison could be made with the Lanshan 1 which is a single pole mid like the Hexpeak, also with 6 main corners to stake out. I have the Pro version, and it's quite good in wind though not as good as the Hexpeak. It beats it on weight (690g for the whole tent which is a single-skin hybrid) and ease of setup but is inferior in all other respects, making it a fairweather ultralight tent for me, which is what I bought it for anyway.

Hi Craig, about £60/80 difference if you get the inner with the Hexpeak, if you go for fly only it's negligible! The lack of shelter was because I wanted the full frontal abuse of the weather for the test, otherwise I'd have tried to break the back of the wind where possible ;) I don't enjoy the bad weather, but it's part and parcel of being a Lansdscape Photographer, haha!

This was great to see. I've "ummdh" and "ahhdh" (both real words) about getting the Lanshan because of the light weight aspect. Since seeing your Arran experience and this I'm now stepping away from the idea because as you showed the conditions in Scotland can very much be like that. I think if anything the Lanshan 1 would be better, obviously you don’t head out in crazy conditions expecting to camp, but you do want something that’ll do the job should the weather change. I wanted to love the LS2, but it’s not the tent for me. Glad you enjoyed it, I seem to be doing a lot of tent related videos 😅😅

Nice 😀 I’ll keep my eyes peeled for that. I’ve never tried the LS1, but they ARE very popular - the trap I fell into with the 2 🧐😂 My advice would be, buy a Hexpeak 🤣 Even has a top Mount for pitching using paracord 👌

@@outlawedlandscapes Rock on cobber, I get your drift regarding the monster wind elements that you're dealing with - singed sporron in limbo with scorched scrotum just ain't cricket m8. As a Limey in exhile, I'll mainly be in southern Appalachia in somewhat sheltered forestry. I'll prolly be taking a closer squint at stoves later on when Jack Frost steps in. Leaves me sufficient time to square up with my sack of bills before I get turfed out of my humble abode and involuntary end up full time time in a Hex Perplexed scenario. Cheers man, enjoy.

To be fair, I've had better performance out of the Lanshan with a better pitch. I still think the Hex wins, but of the two, the Hex was set up well while the Lanshan wasn't. I get the point though, that it was harder to set it up in the conditions.

@@jens-kristiantofthansen9376 Aye, thanks for getting the point 😁 By way of example, in my latest video I visit a remote loch where there are NO easy, nice pitches. It’s all rough heather and bog. Getting a solid pitch for the Lanshan would have been very difficult but because the Hexpeak (along with other mid tents (maybe even the Lanshan 1/pro) could be moulded to fit the ground conditions I was able to find a spot eventually. With a sudden change in weather I’d assume the pressure would make that situation a bit harder, so for me it’s a win for the Hexpeak. Now that the warmer weather is here though, it’ll be nice to get the Lanshan out and about for some more wild camping fun 😁

I’d argue that they are very similar in terms of size both in height and diameter. The main difference between the two is the one/two pole design which I did mention in the video. The purpose of the video is to see which I would trust based on the fact that I own both and require a shelter that can handle the weather should it pose a problem 👌

As stated, this was a real world test. How they would both do in non-ideal conditions with a non-ideal pitch. Standard practice would be to find a perfect pitch and spend time making sure everything was 100%. But sometimes that just isn’t possible. 👍🏻

@@outlawedlandscapes The Xmids are silpoly, not DCF. They are releasing a "pro" 2p version that is DCF, single wall with a silpoly floor and likely in the $600 ish range. The silpoly xmids are $240 (1p) and $260ish? (2p) and reputed to be quite storm worthy. Ordering them sucks - limited supply, high demand. First run of the second gen models sold out in 4 mins. I have a 2nd gen 1p ordered and should get it in time to test in some late winter / early spring flurries.

Seem impossible to get hold of at the moment, I have signed up to the supplier for notification when the Durston becomes available again. A mate has one and I used it a couple of times and was quite impressed, although they are quite pricey.

Aye, the Hexpeak v4a can be modded to take the stove/chimney, otherwise they do the 'Minipeak XL' which comes with the exhaust flap stitched in. www.backpackinglight.co.uk/shelters-1/minipeak-xl.html
