One of Skynyrd's greatest covers. Subtitled for my brazilian friends to enjoy. Footage from live concert at Knebworth Fair in 1976. I do not own the song or the clip. This is aimed for cultural acknowledge and art intended.
I was fortunate enough to see Lynyrd Skynyrd perform 8 times. It was a wonderful marvelous thing that could never be recaptured. But the music lives on, and I say love peace and more bacon grease. That's all the world needs, I guess.
Can you imagine, Skynyrd’s opening for the Stones and playing an old 1920’s country tune that no one has heard before. The crowd goes from quiet to being put into a slow boil. That’s how tight these guys were.
Many a bands have covered "T for Texas T for Tennessee T for Thelma" but none have done it better than Skynyrd!!!! Just my opinion and Thelma sounds like a wicked woman😁
I love it, too. I never have had that luck etc of getting this many badasses added together in a jam and this tight so I can only imagine. But there’s times at an open mic of lameos where the right dude or chick comes up there with you and had your back on these types of bangers instead of “we don’t play that.” I bought tear up from joy halfway through the jam realizing “dang, this is us making this noise” and you’re geeking like you’re on drugs cause you can’t help but smile like Ronnie. I feel it.
Steve Gaines was the missing piece. Imagine if they would have gone in to country. They were so smooth. My favorite South band. They were crisp. Excellent.
@@michaelcrowson3174 I agree but you can’t beat that dirty blues, plus I’m biased in that it’s the main stuff I learned guitar through. So sad and happy at the same time and Skynyrd killed/nailed it no matter when.
True story! Imma guitar player as well but Steve had twist in his abilities that Ronny smiled a lot, all players paid attention when that guy played....I luv the Music they made....his brother cant hold a lite to Ronnie Van zant!
Steve WOULD have been a Hall of Famer in his own right as a solo artist along with being in Lynyrd Skynyrd, who would likely have been in years before 2006 had they not had the plane crash.
This Is THE DAY That Skynyrd Blew The Rolling Stones off of Thier Own Stage, Damn Skynyrd Was In Thier PRIME HERE, R.I.P. To All, The Music Will Live On Forever, As Long As People Can Hear, Cousin Figel
Hard to argue with but I'd go w the Allmans..And which Skynyrd? This one? Pre Steve Gaines? Def not w Johnny though Ricky M is an interesting guy because he was there early for a bit and he does carry the energy still and has done so since the early 90s. But I'd take Filmore just slightly over this show at Knebworth as the greatest live show from an American rock band! 1, 2, easy..!
Allman Brothers #1A these cats #1B. They were on their way to another level when disaster struck. They probably would have been the biggest American Rock band ever had that plane not crashed.
My friend at school told me about sknyrd in 1976,but i was too wrapped up in deep purple, rainbow etc. Only recently did I discover what I was missing, superb band way ahead of there time regarding musicianship, Allen Collins is remarkable and Steve gaines is the icing on the cake, will never see there like again
My story is similar.. I was so wrapped up in the Allman Bros and other bands in 1973-1977 I didn’t pay attention to Skynyrd.. I had no idea how Freakin’ Amazing they were until recently.. Maybe God spared me from having my heart ripped out when the crash happened.
Nothing defines southern America better than Skynyrd. Flashy, but poetic. Might have a Rolex, but the same old blue jeans and t shirt. Country before country was cool. RIP Ronnie VZ
Ya, Ronnie was one hell of a leader of the band! That's hard work keeping all of those egos in line and pulling in the same direction! Ronnie was special,....and a very talented song writer!
The best guitar interplay EVER! Three masters, each with their own complimentary sound and style, showing off and throwing it back and forth. This never gets old!
They were unmatched. Pure talent. What I would do to go back in time and tell them to not get on that plane. They would have been unstoppable had that tragedy not occurred.
Mick was pouting over Ronnie moving the guys down onto the tongue during Free Bird. Mick had told them to stay off the tongue. Ronnie wanted them up front where everyone could see them. He practically drug Steve out there.
ronnie had 3 of the finest players to have ever picked up a guitar in gary rossington, Allen Collins and steve Haines, and leon wilkeson was one hell of a bass player, together they performed some of the greatest stuff ever to be put to vinyl.
Man this same video had over a million views but I think it got deleted. Thank you Jesus I found this!! This performance will never get old!!! That smile Ronnie gives during the guitar solo gives me chills every time.
@@koriman2001 False-Steve had been in the band since the end of May-1st of June of 1976 and had already played on the live "One More From The Road"album recorded in July.Knebworth was the end of August(August 21st)1976 and he was an established member of the band by then.
Imagine that when Mr. Gaines was auditioning for the part in the band, soundman Kevin Elson was told, "If he sucks, just cut him off". Mr. Elson replied, "This guy doesn't suck and man he can play". Mr. Gaines was very laid back and once commented, "Well I hope that I can contribute to the band....". He was just a regular guy and a superb performer. RIP, you were a legend.
Where did you read that I want to check it out! Gary Rossingtom speaks on this. RU-vid search: rossington on steve gaines joining the band. Cassy kept bragging about how good her brother was and he was in town playing a bar w crawdaddy. She asked , “can my brother play with you he’s amazing” and after she asked about a dozen times times they agreed. He came out and tuned up you can hear it at the start. They had ran the song through for about a minute before and told him what key they were in. … This was the audition! They allowed him to come on and if he sucked liked you said would just turn his amp down and this is what he pulled off. Ronnie is geekin the whole time, they couldn’t believe how good he was.
Just remember....Always be ready, and "Don't let that flag hit the ground"..... One the of best bands performing one of the best songs ever.... I'd say 90% had no idea what they had just witnessed.....
I researched testimonials and comments from the folks who attended this show. The consensus among attendees is that Skynyrd blew the Stones off the stage. Several said the Stones arrived late for their set and played an average, somewhat sloppy performance. This show proves Skynyrd was one of the best, if not the best live band of their time.
Brother Steve basically gave his life for this band ..... Just like people can have a stronger connection with a one year relationship than one where they were together for 10 years, Steve made his mark on this band in just a brief period and it was as if he had been an original member... He was welcomed into this band and loved very quickly.. looking back people still consider him just as large of a part of this band as anyone ever was even though his time was brief.. it's unfortunate he did not get time to enjoy his money and fame... But he will always be a legend... 🙏
It's almost uncanny how the film crew managed to miss the guitarist who was performing nearly every solo. Still, a great band at their peak, live with no studio jiggery pokery. You're welcome, England, for this set. One of the greatest Rock and Roll live performances ever caught on tape.
They completely missed Billy's piano solo as well. I mean they had a lot of camera angles but somehow in editing it got screwed up. Maybe someday someone will go through the originals and get it right.
I love this video !! I’ve probably watched it a hundred times I’ve the years , I love when Ronnie looks back & smiles When Steve Gaines starts playing , he knew what a tremendous player he had found . Steve was such a awesome player & think what a short time he had to prove it in a Nationally known level , & yet he did it . He in my opinion would have been one of those players you utter there names in the same sentence as Dwayne Allman , Eric Clapton , Mark Knophler , Toy Caldwell , etc …. But one of the best 3 chord Rock bands ever!!!!
I'm glad you put Toy on your list, he is criminally underrated. And yeah, Steve was something really special. And what's more, Skynyrd was a band that was even better than the sum of its incredibly talented parts, and that's saying something.
They censored the 1976 live album cover of theirs. Had a bird with a rebel flag. Thank goodness! I sure was offended by a flag! So glad they changed it to a picture of the southern states. What a relief! Now I can listen to that album! 🤦♂️
imagine having a time machine and for us and going back to experience this greatness, I was 12 at the time and living in a coalmining town in England, this is the best live set I've ever heard, skynyrd were masters of their art.
DAMN! Skynyrd - the BEST FREAKIN' LIVE MUSIC BAND IN HISTORY!!!!! As stellar as their original compositions are (see Street Survivors)...this cover of Jimmie Rogers's classic song is EPIC!!! The Cameraman was off, though. He didn't focus on the prodigiously gifted Steve Gaines, who tore this song up out of the ground, beyond the stage, and into the stratosphere. (That isn't Collins or Rossington whom Ronnie was smiling radiantly at...). He also should have focused on Billy Powell during his solo. But still...this song never fails to send me into the cosmos with euphoric bliss. Goddamn that shit-trap of a plane they boarded 15 months later...on my nineteenth birthday, no less...oh, Ronnie...Steve...where have you gone...

I was a born and raised Texas boy in San Diego when I saw them at the Sports Arena on their last tour before the crash. When they played this song I was certain that this was the best live performance that I'd ever seen. 45 years later, I have to put it as one of the best I've ever seen -- along side of ZZ Top's World Wide Texas Tour that I saw at Jack Murphy Stadium the year before.
Lost count of how many turntable needles I wore out listening to this song from their “One More From the Road” album back in the late 70s. That’s one bad ass southern jam session!
If anyone is aware of a better rock instrumental performance, please lmk. Ronnie ain’t no slouch either ha. But this 3 guitar lineup, good grief. Gaines sounds like he’s shot out of a cannon. Gary makes a guitar sing like no other, always. And when Collins plays, you damn well always know who it is. The driving baseline of Leon and punchy drums of Artimus are symphonic and as powerful as it gets musically. Oh yeah, just to remind everyone that no band has a better rock pianist, Billy Powell solo, why not.
Jacksonville's finest... these guys practiced their asses off before they got spotted by a promotor....it definitely shows up in their live performances from way back in the day...
You just know that Ronnie is smiling at Cassie Gains when Steve is ripping. It just looks like he is thinking "Hell yes Cass, he is the real deal." Notice at 4:40 that Steve is doing the same kind of dirty lick that Gary Rossington does that also made Ronnie smile. I just think that the angle that he is looking is behind Steve Gains which would aim him right at the Honkett's and it makes perfect sense because Cassie networked Steve into the band and he brought a whole new life to the band.
Yes! Because this was his audition! He’s definitely smiling at nodding to Cassie. Gary rossington spoke about this as you probably already know. You can hear steve tune up at the start. They told him what key and did a quick practice before the show and they said Steve acted like he didn’t even care and he came out and played this song and left on their tourbus after the concert as member! Such a sick story. !
@@bigbb416-5 This WAS NOT his audition. He'd been in the band 3 months by the time they played Knebworth and it was the largest crowd (by far)Lynyrd Skynyrd ever played in front of.Do you really think Ronnie Van Zant, being the perfectionist he was, would audition an unknown guitar player live onstage in front of their biggest audience ever😅???
I just have to keep coming back and watching this performance every few months. I always loved this song from their "One More From the Road" album that I had since I was a kid. So when I first saw this it was great to actually SEE a similar performance. But I failed to realize just how great this particular song was executed on that particular day. I'm thinking its about my favorite Skynyrd performance ever and also holding its own among other band's performances I have long considered really the best. What a loss...
They're all gone now, with the exception of Artimus Pyle(drums)and Leslie Hawkins(backing vocals)but their names and their music will live on,and will inspire generations of kids to learn the eternal gift of music by watching these old clips.Rest In Peace Ronnie,Steve,Cassie,Dean,Allen,Leon, Billy,JoJo,Ed,and Gary, you guys(and girls)have truly earned it.....
He sang it in American English, it was played in international musical notes, but I believe it should not be translated into other languages. In order to listen to the spirit of the song you have to believe in Texas and believe in Tennessee. In order to sing the song you have to know what you are singing about!!!!
