They did help with the development of a lot of the previous M Rated games via Nintendo SPD, but Emio is the one they have had the biggest involvement so far.
@@quesobuddyStudio Trigger is also credited in Xenoblade 3, and I think this happened some other times. Not to mention Nintendo had animated openings for games made by big studios, if I recall Studio Khara made some fire emblem cutscenes.
I was streaming Eternal Darkness with a friend a while ago and at one point we got the sanity effect that stopped the gameplay and showed something like "you have completed the Eternal Darkness demo" and for a minute it legit had me thinking "wait did we somehow get a demo disc for this game?" 10/10 gaming experience
I knew about the game going into it, and didn't think I would be fooled by any of them. The one where it pretends to delete the save got me really good.
The only truly uncensored version of BMX XXX is on the Gamecube. Both PS2 and Xbox were both heavily censored. That -factoid- fact tickles me every time I think about it.
Emio - The Smiling Man really does earn that M rating by the end of the game. There's certain imagery and themes discussed, especially in the epilogue, that are pretty disturbing and upsetting especially for a Nintendo game.
Yeah. By the time the credits rolled, I was not 100% sold. It felt like it was an extremely soft M-Rating and that the story wrapped up a little too quickly. But then the epilogue happened and…let’s just say that was one of the most disturbing things I’ve seen in any game, let alone a Nintendo game. The game as a whole was like an 8/10 for me, but that epilogue bumps it up to a 9 or 10 easily.
Even though they’ve been doing it for years, Nintendo releasing M rated titles still feels a bit jarring knowing the family friendly image they have , sort like when Disney used the touchstone label to release more adult oriented movies than what their usual brand provides.
Still remember being a kid, seeing Punch-Out Wii was E-10 and thinking that was crazy. “Nintendo could only make E games!” Showing 8 year old me these games would have blown my stupid little mind
23:44 Scott canonically has a Tomadachi Life house consisting of characters from the main series. I am so happy.
I would’ve briefly mentioned Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes as that game was conceived by Nintendo. Not only is there Nintendo references in the game itself but it was only released on one console that being the GameCube, I mean even credits if the game mention Shigeru Miyamoto. (R.I.P Sillicon Knights)

I don't think Scott is mentally prepeared to learn about Time Twist for Famicom Disk System for featuring content that would almost certainly land it as M rated if it released in the states today
14:52 playing bayonetta for the first time was so crazy to me, because i would work my ass off killing a boss only for it to come back as a regular enemy lmao. wonderful game
I had started with bayo3 which wasnt too hard for me to grasp since i had played both transformes devistation and MGR and i got through with only deaths caused by my own stupidity. But bayonetta 1 litterly tries to kill you at every corner like having enemys instantly doing cheep attacks after there 1st introduction. Still its a wild ride from begining to end
mr.curtis6730 yeah, the first game's difficulty is crazy. it's not the worst thing in the world but it totally gets me. i hear 2 and 3 are easier and i kind of hope so just so i don't keep getting steamrolledl ike i have in the first game lmao honestly though even with how hard it is, it's still a great game
I think Visual Novels are a great medium for the horror genre so I certainly wasn't disappointed by the Emio reveal It's a shame some people only care about 3D survival horror
Everyone knows that it's illegal to have friends in Russia, only vodka and murder are allowed. That is also one of the main reasons why the country doesn't have any friendly nation.
3:18 This just in Scott didn't play many horror games from this era. Just one on top of my head thats spooky on the atmosphere alone? Silent Hill 2 enough said.
I’m nearly half way into Emio right now, it’s my first visual novel. I keep hearing about the epilogue being the best part but the story has me interested as I love criminal investigation programmes so this has been enjoyable so far. Is it only the epilogue that is scary? Also do u guys have any other visual novel recommendations as I wouldn’t mind trying a couple others after this one. Take care
@@Sar1386 The main story never gets too bad, there is some blood but overall it's very much a soft M-rating. However once the first credits role and you unlock the epilogue, the game actually gives you a content warning saying "hey you should make sure you're ready before you play this", and yeah the epilogue is significantly darker and more disturbing than the main game but also the best part of the story by far. It alone bumped the game from an 8/10 to a 9/10 for me. I think Nintendo purposefully made it separate from the main game in case some people aren't able to handle it. I'm not a VN expert but others I've enjoyed in the past are 999, Ghost Trick, and Ace Attorney. I also recommend 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim, it's half VN and half RTS with an amazing story.
I remember when they censored the original cover art for Shadowman, where, instead of him holding a skull, it was a pistol. I saw that version in advertisement for the game in a magazines (maybe nintendo power?) before the game came out. Because of c0lumbine, they swapped out the pistol for the skull.
People (well, English speakers) clearly still don't give a damn about Famicom Detective Club since I can only assume the remakes of the first two sold poorly. So poorly that NoA changed the name for the English version. Instead of *Famicom Detective Club: The Smiling Man,* we got _Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club._ They clearly felt that they had to obscure the fact that it's a part of that series. It'll probably help. I imagine this will sell better than the first two. There's almost no game-play of them on RU-vid. Not a good sign... Oh, and The Smiling Man is actually the fourth game. The 3rd is call _BS Detective Club: The Past Erased by Snow._ BS being Broadcast Satellite, as in the Satelliview.
Technically, Perfect Dark is the first M rated Nintendo game! But it’s not under the Nintendo banner, they used Rare the same way Disney uses the Pixar, Marvel Studios, or the Touchstone and Miramax brand for mature movies! Although Conker’s Bad Fur Day had no Nintendo’s involvement, since THQ released the game internationally, since Rare didn’t publish games in non-English speaking countries!
You missed another "potential M rated game" on the Wii, it's Zangeki no Reginleiv, a weird hack n slash with lots of blood and dismemberments developed by the Earth Defense Force developers but published by Nintendo, and was rated CERO D in Japan, so +17. The main character of it appeared in Smash Wii U as a trophy and Ultimate as a spirit too.
- Emio is the 4th game in the series, the 3rd only released on the Satellaview extension for SFC. - Emio is not the first M-rated game with Nintendo staff, since Nintendo SPD back then also worked on Devil's Third, Bayonetta 2 and Fatal Frame 4/5 (which they are still credited on the Switch port specifically). - Rare M-rated games where published by THQ. And even some Rare games where just localized by Nintendo, not published by them (like Jet Force Gemini).
Anyone else kinda miss the feeling of playing a T or M rated game making you feel like a bad ass? Like dude when I played my first T rated game at 12, it felt so cool to finally break into what was considered a little more "mature" in the gaming space
Devil's Third was pretty awesome. I remember I was playing Xenoblade X when Devil's Third got to my home. I was like "Okay, let me check this"... Then I spend a week only playing Devil's Third and only came back to Xenoblade X 30 hours later. The single-player was GREAT. The style of the game was great, the cheesy plot was funny as hell, the boss battles were excellent, changing from gun fight to sword fight was handled just perfectly. And the only multiplayer was just insane, some of the best I've ever played. I really don't understand why reviewers hated it... but it was during that time when it was cool to hate Nintendo and the Wii U, and many reviewers on RU-vid were the "angry type" that targeted Nintendo, so I guess there is there. My only problem with Devil's Third was the not so great framerate, but it was very playable and not really much different from most games at the time. And I am 100% sure many reviewers did NOT play the game. Jim Sterling comments on the plot and gameplay elements were factually wrong, you could clearly see he did not play the game (and at the time he was an huge anti-SJW, anti-feminism, so his content was just trash back then). IGN's review also had the same issues and they claimed to have played the multiplayer when the multiplayer simply wasn't online yet (so they just flatout lied). But hey, professional online gaming journalism was just pure garbage, no wonder they are all dead today. By the way, I also remember the marketing for this game being terrible. The only multiplayer trailer they had on RU-vid at the time was actually uploaded by me (on this very account). It went viral with over 139k views and it was the second most viewed video of the game on RU-vid (behind the E3 trailer). I still have the video, but it's on private now - and it was also na E3 trailer, much more interesting than the original and Nintendo simply didn't even bothered to release it (I don't remember how I got my hands on it, maybe a press release or some random website somwhere). I also made a comparison video showing the evolution of the game when compared to the E3 gameplay and Itagaki even commented on it on Facebook.
I dunno about the performance being on par with most games on the time, since while there were definitely some PS3 or 360 games that ran poorly like Far Cry 3, even then DT is probably worse than those, but by 2015 PS4 and Xbox One made at least locked 30 to be the standard for 2 years, and also most of Nintendo's games on Wii U ran pretty well, so it was at least one of the worst runnings games of the year and it's console.
@@oscarzxn4067 Sure, but the game didn't run poorly at all. The framerate was a solid 30 fps with a few hicups here and there, MUCH better than Far Cry 3, my dude. Hell, I am playing FF16 on fidelity mode on my PS5 at the moment, and it runs worse than Devil's Third, for example. And I don't really care because it's still pretty playable.
It's crazy how much the kid friendly image from the NES and early SNES days stuck with Nintendo. The Mortal Kombat games post the first one were uncensored on SNES. The SNES got Doom, Doom Troopers, and Primal Rage (though, that one did censor the one fatality where you urinate on the enemy... so maybe some remaining censorship). The N64 had the Turok series as console exclusives, as well as Perfect Dark, and Conker. Gamecube got plenty of M rated games, and actual nudity with BMX XXX (which other consoles didn't have). Despite all that, there are still comments like "I can't believe I lived to see the day this appeared on a Nintendo console" when something raunchy, or bloody comes onto the Switch.
25:10 as a gay and trans person who has been a fan of Scott’s for years, there’s something so oddly heartwarming hearing him call out homophobia as “dumb as hell.” Idk it really made me happy. Thank you!
Distribution!! Thanks. That solves the question of why on earth so many games that aren't developed or published by Nintendo had the 00000 above the barcode. I noticed so many games had that while not having apparently any Nintendo input, yet it was clear that Nintendo had something to do with those games being available on switch (Skyrim, Dark souls).
19:36 funny The Last Story is mentioned because in Europe it was actually rated PEGI 16 (so was Metroid Other M funnily enough) and on occasions PEGI 16 games do correlate with Mature rated games in North America (including the latter Bayonetta titles and the last two Battlefields) but both titles were rated Teen here. I guess the ESRB viewed them in the upper end of that spectrum, high enough to be firmly Teen rated but not enough for a Mature rating.
I don't remember on what video it was but I remember a comment on an Eternal Darkness related video where commenter shared his memory of playing it with a friend, and accidentally changing the tv source and it played Fairly Odd Parents, and initially thinking it's part of the sanity effects.
Miitopia being rated 18 in Russia and only Russia is really funny. It means, by technicality, I own an 18 rated game. I’ve had this game since I was like 10.
I'm surprised Scott didn't mention 斬撃のREGINLEIV / Zangeki no REGINLEIV. It was developed by Sandlot, but published by Nintendo. It was a Japan only Wii game released in 2010. It got a D rating from the CERO, being the first Nintendo game to get it.
For me Along with Windwaker the Wii U Sold me on Bayonetta. I mean it was released in a double pack which was a big plus, Bayonetta 2 was a arunning looking game And after I got a good feel for the games I really did appreciate having the gamepad for quick swap options
Eternal Darkness is one of the best of its specific genre of Survival horror and remains my personal favorite. Sequel coming soon right guys haha right
That Emio marketing strategy makes me want Nintendo to make a Survival Horror game all on their own. I fully believe Nintendo would make one of the scariest games ever the Nintendo devs are messed up in the brain (i saw this with affection)
Episodes like this make me wonder what Scott and friends decide on for editing and release order for these Stash carpet videos. The Zelda video last week referenced Echos of Wisdom so unless he also tacked on that acknowledgement then he filmed that after it was revealed in June. This episode was stated to have been filmed in February and then he had to add the Emio section afterward - sometime after that released in August. Curious to know if this was something he did 8 months ago and is uploading now, how much of a backlog he's built up.
