Same here, sooo happy with my 16GB 256GB base model MBA. Use mine for programming, game dev. and even some light Blender usage. Hasn't let me down once and still amazed by the battery life while power using the system. For my work my boss gave me an older 16" MBP, the last Intel one, and it's slower many times while constantly blowing the fans.

I don't care if it's because of 256 gigs or low ram. The fact that a 2 year old fanless laptop beat the pro model of 2022, I'm genuinely disappointed in the M2 pros, especially because m2 is just overclocked m1. That being said, my M1 air is a blessing ❤️

M2 is just an overclocked M1. That is definitely NOT the case. The problem is interfacing speeds between SSD and the CPU, which is more important with less memory and more disk access

One scenario you can consider testing too is virtualization with programs like Parallels, which will really show the practical impact of the swap speed differences. This is applicable to a lot of people because many professional productivity applications (e.g. engineering/simulation software) are either much better or only available on windows.

Please don’t, this real word test are stupid if you are using normal use like web browsing, office buy the new one because you will not use the swap memory so the cpu will take care of all the stuffs and the M2 cpu is faster than the M1, if you are doing have stuffs then the air shouldn’t have been considered , buy the M1 Pro/Ultra/Max

I've been using your in-depth reviews to make buying decisions for over 5 years and never regretted it. While I think keeping it balanced and showing performance as an average user would use it is valid and relevant, I absolutely want you to continue to hammer and squeeze the products until they scream because only fully knowing the pluses and minuses can lead to an informed decision that leads to an ultimately satisfied customer at whatever level they want to buy. I think it's especially relevant for the customer that doesn't have the money to buy top of the line but has the intent to grow into their purchase and use it for increasingly demanding projects in the future. So, keep doing your thing and let Aunt Figgypudding enjoy her overpriced, underperforming shiny new object in ignorant bliss if that's what keeps her happy.

There's really only 2.5 solid options for me: M1 air for the best value in a laptop / M1 pro 14 in for a laptop that would last you 7-10 years. OR the M2 air (depending on how the reviews are)

@@sunbhattacharjee Of course the M1 Air cannot compete the 14’ pro on performance, however for my daily workflow, mainly programming with VSCode and Chrome, it works well enough, the 14’ Pro just gives more power for extreme tasks. The 13’ Pro is an old 2019 i7 model, it got sick and stuck on average work, so it's a trade-in for the Air now. 14’ Pro sits very well on the desk, but the lighter Air is something I want to carry around or work on laptops. In my experience, only one of the programs I installed still runs on Rosetta instead of Apple silicon, so you could say it's pretty much all optimized.

@Garrus Vakarian Fair enough but most Ultrabooks for Windows are north of $1,000. They are the competitors for the Air (like the Dell XPS 13, HP Spectre, and MS Surface Laptop). I own all of those personally and used them at work. None of them are as snappy as the M1 MBA. That makes them an incredible value despite the logo attached to the back.

M2 air base model will face same issue. Apple did this on purpose to force upgrading storage and buying from their site if You want more memory.

@@gabrielecarbone8235 Yeah there is no way that with 1 nand and no fan Air m2 will be faster than m1 unless you do super light task that don’t use SSD. With bigger storage it will be faster but then Air is getting super expensive especially outside of the US. For students and business usage (outside of content creators that make 8k material) Air M1 is the best value for sure. Current M2 problems show how much we as consumers need competition in Intel and AMD. Unless they do something meaningful with their mobile chips that will make Windows machines work for 8-10hrs with M1 performance Apple will get away with such decisions like 1 nand ssd

If I was about to buy brand new macbook, I’d go for M1 MBP 13’’ with 16gb of ram and 256gb ssd. Still the sexiest hardware of all time on laptop (in my opinion), brutal battery AND brutal performance. And that touchbar is making it much more premium looking!

I do video work for a living on my Dell XPS 15 and I'll have multiple apps open when I'm working. I've even had Resolve, Vegas Pro and Lightroom all open at the same time along with browsers, etc, it's just how I work. Even with photos, I don't do photo shoots often but when I do it's easily hundreds of photos. So in this case I think your tests are realistic and actually a bit tame really when it comes to pro use scenarios.

I suspect your XPS has 16GB of RAM which is the bottleneck in pro work. I doubt the 16GB/256GB MB Pro 13 has any issues doing what your XPS 15 does even though you are comparing the Mac which is an ultrabook with the XPS that really compares to a MB Pro 14 Pro. This is the point the detractors are making, a worker is only as good as his tools and if you use the wrong tools, blaming others is a bit rich!

I’ll be super interested in M1 Air vs M2 Air, yes the M2 has some quality of life changes (MagSafe, better webcam) but if it’s also stuck with one NAND chip for the SSD I have a feeling the performance will be worse just like we’ve seen here.

I think it would be good to compare a 16GB/512GB M2 model with the same config of M1 air. That way we remove the limitation of SSDs in the comparison and only compares M1/M2 performance. A lot of slowdowns of the M2 MBP comes from slow SSD speed.

Please. Almost all MBAs sold are the cheapest entry-level base versions. Especially with M1 and Unified Memory. The _whole point_ of these reviews is to compare the versions that MOST PEOPLE actually purchase - which is almost always the entry-level base version of a MacBook. Why don't you understand that?

I had the m1 air, and I was happy with it, I am now on a base 16'' MBP m1 pro (thanks to your videos!), and to be honest, besides the quality of life upgrades, performance wise none of it is a huge difference in my day to day, even with 4k 10 bit footage. I think the m1 air will be a beast for a while to come, and like you said, the next jump then is to the 14'' MBP because of the poor performance/pricing of the m2 in the old chassis, which doesn't bode well for the M2 air, IMHO.

Oh very good points. In my humble opinion the thing that a lot of people don’t talk about maybe max tech has a little bit but when you hear people like René Ritchie always saying will go with this much ram or whatever the future proof it but that was more an Intel mentality. With M1 and M2 and all this as the software catches up it’s only gonna get better so unless her machine was still perform very well. I have an M1 MacBook Air and can run the complete Adobe creative cloud sans premiere Pro because I have final cut and I don’t know premiere Pro is there I just don’t like it. But everything else runs really well and I have it hooked into a Studio Display I mean I can’t imagine why I’d want to get an M2 unless if I was eventually going to get a MacBook Pro 14 inch with may be more memory which I might do eventually but the M1 MacBook Air right now just runs great

There it is , the answer I wanted . I love the m1 air, and after this I’m even happier knowing that it is still performing amazingly . It might get beat by the 512 pro version but that’s already hundreds of dollars more expensive. For what I need , the m1 is perfect , and knowing it is still keeping up with new chips , I’m even more satisfied . Thanks for the tests , I got the m1 because of you guys , and I await the matchup that the m2 air gives .

I feel like the choice here is pretty clear. If your after max(hehe) bang for the buck get an M1 air. If you want a more future proof machine that ticks the 512 ssd and 16 gig ram boxes, just move on up to the base 14 inch. It's a MUCH better computer in every way and usually only an additional $100 bucks if you can find the 8 month old 14 inch on sale. I still don't really understand why they made the m2 MBP to begin with

I'd wait for a review if I were you. I think it is likely that the 256GB SSDs will be single NAND on the M2 Air as well and then you definitely need to upgrade to 512GB. I would also like see how much the M2 will throttle in the new chassis before I place an order.

For the same price you can get a base M1 Pro 14 inch laptop, which is a much better machine in every single way.

Not really as this will bump up price to the 2k territory of 14’’ Macbook Pro. Apple dropped ball with M2 that is basically overclocked M1 and with SSD especially. I think base Air M2 will have same problems.

I still love my MBA 11' from 2015! It's so portable and nice but the only problem is it takes me a minute to open tabs and things like that, I do have a bad habit of opening tons of tabs and leave them there. Regardless, your videos definitely help a lot on deciding what I want and need, the only thing is just the budget problems now lol

Great one! Ordered M2 Air with 16Gb RAM, and 256Gb HD. Hopefully that will suffice. I just couldn’t afford upgrading the HD as well. And in all my naivity, I hope the Air comes with 2 x 128Gb NAN chips 🤞🏻

Idk, try to cancel order… Hoping in this case is just stupid. M2 Air will have huge thermal issues, you can buy new M1 for 999 and be happy with it. Im waiting for M3 to upgrade if problems will be fixed

Would also recommend cancelling the order. Thermal issues and super slow SSDs at 256gb. Just get the regular M1 Air or if you want something much faster, get the M1 Pro Macbook Pro.

The M2 is not really upgraded in it's webcam quality and other specs are upgrade are not really significant

Preordered two MacBook Air M2 yesterday, one is 8GB RAM+512GB SSD and the other one is 16GB RAM+512GB SSD. I confirmed with the Apple tech service and new MacBook Air 256GB has one NAND chip. So 512GB SSD is the best option. I'm not sure which RAM size is good enough.

Seeing is believing. The 8GB M1 MacBook Air is perfectly fine for normal people performing normal non-pro tasks, and is much cheaper than an 8GB MacBook Pro and any 16GB MacBook. There are certain RU-vidrs strongly encouraging people to spend a lot of extra money to upgrade to 16GB models. The difference between your channel and theirs is that they just talk about why the 8GB M1 Air isn't good enough and you actually show that it is.

I think the base m2 air will lose to the base m1 air in terms of speed and throttling and for sure price £1149 for m2 air and £899 for m1 air under student discount which is my case atm. Apple you lost badly this year and 100% waiting for the m3 or maybe look else where as Asus is killing it this year.

The regular M2 is basically DOA. Easily outperformed by the regular M1 in base configurations, slightly faster in higher end configurations but too expensive then and the M1 Pro Macbooks are better in every single way for the same price.

m2 14% faster than m1 ... even with the 256gb SSD the m2 mac is way faster than windows and the dell 1260p laptop. I think apple are feeling very good right now!
