Big respect on publishing this video. As someone who's overspent before, hype can seriously make us overspend to get what we "think" we want. To combat that, I try to have a checklist of things I know I need the product to do while setting a realistic budget with a hard upper limit. It's definitely hard to follow but it helps me avoid burning money on extra things I "think" I want.

What a lot of people don't realize (and I don't blame them) is that not all workloads or tasks lend themselves to be multicore, also from a software engineering point of view. In those cases, all that really matters is the single core and therefore you'll never see a difference between the M1 and the M1 Ultra. And even if the task lends itself to be done spread over more cores, you also have to code it that way, which may be more hassle than what it's worth performance wise. For most people I'd argue the M1 is sufficient, but if you want/need some GPU power and more importantly more available ram the M1 Max is fantastic value. I'm a web dev and also dabble in game dev and AI, and to be honest I'd choose the M1 Macbook Air if it could have more than 16GB of ram, but since it can't, I went with M1 Max with 64 GB of RAM.

I hear you on the RAM. In all the devices i've bought over the past decade (Macs, iPhones, iPads) its always been the RAM which has limited the lifespan. 16GB is the minimum these days. 32GB should see a usable machine in 5 years time. 8GB is a bit of a joke these days, that's phone and tablet territory, not befitting a Mac.

Thank you for posting this! I still think that when the software is updated you may see some more gains. I am looking at the second step M1 Max or the First step M1 Ultra with as much ram as I can afford and a 2tb or 4tb SSD. I have a couple of friends who should be getting their M1 Studio’s soon so I will get a chance to try them. Stay safe and make good decisions 😎

@@aarondavis8953 It's important to note that it isn’t always a case of “wait until the software is updated”. Sometimes the software can't be updated because the fundamental problem can't be extended that far. As the saying goes, “9 people can't make a baby in 1 month”. That said, it doesn’t mean that more cores can't be used. If you have two apps that can run 4 threads at once, then on a 4 core machine they're going to need to keep swapping out, but on an 8 core they can each have 4 dedicated CPU cores (doesn’t quite work that way in practice but you get the idea). So while an individual app may not benefit, the overall system definitely does

The M1 Ultra hasn't been out for a month yet and when you are using something as new as the Ultra you should expect software to lag behind. I went years on a quad G5 waiting for the extra cores to be used and most of that time they sat idle. Good news is now that the hardware exists we can expect software optimization to improve as developers get their hands on commercial units. Don't give up on it just yet.

There's an update to Final Cut Pro that Apple gave to reviewers but hasn't released yet. The update makes use of the Ultra's dual chip encoders and gets the "twice as fast" export you're expecting. Without the update (which is getting a bit embarrassing that it hasn't been released) FCP only uses the decoders on one of the two chips.

I think the Ultra is just waiting for the software to catch up. When we get software that can take advantage of the processor, you will see the difference. Maybe if you open more apps to test the processor you would also see a difference.

While that seems likely, I’ve been burned too often in the past buying things while thinking ‘the company promised to implement the feature I need in a future software update’, which never happened. Buy things for what they can do right now, not for empty promises of future awesomeness.

I can get by with slower systems, and, yes, the new stuff gives you that nice snappiness but I don't need the snappiness to get my work done. The M1 is roughly 2x what we had in 2015. The M1 Max is double that and the Ultra is double that again. So for me, the Ultra would be what I need in about 14 years. I could get it or get the mini though I'd like something with more RAM and displays. Unfortunately Apple has many holes in their product line right now. So it's easiest to just wait.

Counter example: The M1 iPad Pro. Folks bought it thinking Apple would add features to iPadOS to take advantage of all that power. We’re still waiting on that, and I’m not convinced that’ll come anytime soon if ever. Don’t get me wrong though, I do hope we see plenty of optimization and features to take advantage of Apple Silicon and the power of the Max and Ultra.

@@GregsGadgets Absolutely! This wasn’t about you, but just a fun remark on how other reviewers have done in the past. Great video, good energy and fun jokes! I too believe that the computer isn’t fully optimised yet, software-wise. These computers aren’t giving their full potential. The question is: Is this due to the software not being fully optimised yet (or a bug) or is it a deliberate limitation from apples side. I wonder, may the initial lack of performance be a business tactic from apple? I mean, sometimes when something isn’t living up to what was promised debates arise, and those bring attention to the product. If apple later releases a software update that fixes the “issues” the product will swing up even more than in the beginning. I know game developers have done something similar - paying reviewers to give bad ratings in order to create debate and thereby giving the game attention. What do you think?

Dude I’ve got buyers remorse and I haven’t even got my M1 Ultra yet! These bench marks and tests are bumming me out. There are no huge or even obvious boosts in performance with the Ultra. Hoping that changes when Apple updates Final Cut Pro!

I’ve been trying to tweak and upgrade a trashcan Mac Pro for a few years. Early this year I realized that I could get a BRAND NEW M1 Mac for less than a specced out 10-year-old Intel Mac. I wanted a desktop computer instead of docking a laptop, but the iMac without a Pro or Max chip made me wait for the March event, and I’m glad I did. The M1 Max Studio is enough power for me, and it’s perfect for the price.

Excellent video. Great content. Expressed a concern I had myself about buying an M1 Ultra Mac Studio (which I did). My workflow is software. That said, I’ve struggled with depression most of my life. It’s…a constant struggle, to say the least. I’m glad you were open about it - I think keeping it to yourself just makes it get worse faster. Anyway, what’s important is you don’t give up - don’t lose hope. I’d say something more optimistic than that if I believed it would help, but I don’t think that’s how this works. Just keep trying, and keep some hope alive. Eventually, you may find yourself in a different place, and be relieved you didn’t give up.

Joker reference… Nice 👌🏻 Ordered the top version with 64 GPU cores and 128GB RAM. This is a computer not just for todays workloads but for the next 4-5 years. I do plenty of astrophotography which needs a lot of processing in PixInsight and Photoshop. The stacking of hundreds of images can take around an hour on my 2018 MacMini (w/ eGPU). Looking forward to the extra kick of the studio when it arrives

Shoot, I'm rocking out a 2010 iMac I got for free. I dropped in an i7 processor, 32GiB RAM, and 1 TB SSD. After swapping out the OS for Ubuntu 20.04.4 this thing takes care of everything I do with ease. With that said, I'm shopping around for something Applely because I want to learn Final Cut Pro. Great Vid but probably overkill for most of us.

I'm in a similar boat. I have an i7 Hackintosh that's ~6-7 years old. It's still running reasonably well for most tasks, and even some games. So I probably don't need to upgrade. But I'm starting to notice slowdowns, hang-ups, etc. The OS is now capped at Catalina (unless I take the time and hassle to learn and switch to Open Core, which I don't really have the patience for). I was really hoping for a new Apple Silicon 27" iMac. But alas that's no longer a thing. Sigh.

I went through a phase where I bought two of everything such a camera lenses and I made a list. Nowadays I ask myself “have I hit the wall?” meaning can the new product do something the old one can’t. I balance this with my irritation of looking at things built down to a price like some “gaming” laptops. I once bought the iPad 3 because I read the reviewers raving about it but it was not much better than the old one and the extra display resolution was not noticeable. My latest iPad is the latest iPad mini 6 because I use it on public transport. I don’t regret buying it.

This is the best video I’ve seen from you yet. 💪 Awesome. 😎 The financial benefit of your new M1 Ultra may be realized in the extended usability of the unit over years to come as operating systems and editing programs become more demanding, even for light processing loads. If you wanted to venture into motion graphics or other processor intensive tasks for your RU-vid videos, you are now only limited by your software budget. Also, does Davinci Resolve run faster than Final Cut on M1 Ultra? Thank you for cautioning people about unintentionally overspending. (By the way, external hard drive costs get substantial (Thousands $) with high bit rate video footage, so the computer to process said footage is just the beginning of growing financial costs once a person chooses, or is forced by clients to go down that path. Acomputer to process said footage is just the beginning of some serious costs for large video files so don’t feel bad if you have a computer that does everything that you need it to. It’s not fun to be on the other end of the equation whereby your computer keeps crashing while you’re trying to edit because the files are too large.) 👍 Great video! 💪

Also, and I just want to get real for a second, you're not the only guy out there with crippling depression. I'm in the same boat. I'm 33, make more money now than I have ever in my entire life, I just got a job offer for more money, I am 8 months sober, I've lost 60lbs and started working out, I paid off all my debt, and I am finally able to invest and save the way I always wanted. But, I am miserably dissatisfied with my life. I am alone, I have no friends, and I haven't so much as had any interest shown me from women in over a decade. My life sucks. You are not alone in struggling, my friend. Please know that. It can feel isolating, especially as a man, but you are not alone.

I’m a little worried I over spent on the memory. I was torn. I have a 14” MBP with 32gb ram. But I’m usually running at 20gb pressure. I just didn’t want to get a few years down the road and a few more tasks added to my work flow, only to regret getting 32gb of ram. Point is, give it a few years. Then let us know if you regret it.

Apparently there is a version of Final cut that has yet to be released that does take advantage of the newer hardware and does give faster export times, likely to be released this year. Let’s see if this happens.

I gather it’s a case that only apps that have been optimised to take advantage of the Ultra version will get the benefit, until then it’s kinda like running 32-bit software on a 64-bit computer/OS, it’ll work, but you don’t get the benefit of the other 32 bits of memory space; similarly, current apps will run fine on one half of the Ultra as if they’re just on a Max, but they’ll have to be updated to take advantage of the fact that there are actually two Maxes therein.

I almost made this same mistake myself!! My saving grace, sold my 16” m1 max, scored a 14” m1 pro 1tb for 1500$, forced myself to not get the Ultra (it was VERY HARD TO DO) and decided the M1 max was plenty powerful for a desktop solution in the Mac Studio. Paired with a nano coated studio display and couldn’t be happier to have an incredibly capable desktop that is always ready to go. And the m1 pro 14” battery life is insane and easy to take projects on the go!

Hey with M1 Max what was your ram? Do you think 32gb is efficient enough to do 4k60 h.265 422 10 bit editing of weddings and real estate with basic color grading and some effects? 64gb seems like overkill to me.

Hi Greg, i’m thinking to buy this computer to make run metashape, wich is a photogrametry software. So I need a very powerfull computer to do the job. I already have a Mac mini but not the M1 generation. It works pretty well but It gets really warm when the time of caculation is to long (several hours). Does the mac studio have the same issue? I mean, does he have a watercooling system ?

It is not a mistake and here is why: The computer you have now, M1 Ultra, is an awesome device. At this moment the Operating System or even the Applications are not optimized yet. With the focus on the word "yet" which over time will all of a sudden show up. You bought the best Apple has to offer today, which does not mean the next computer is not around the corner. If you think about the ROI this computer is going to help you in every way possible and truly be your work horse for the next 24 months - 24 months for a 4k investment.... I'd say that is darn good. Given the fact that I am still salty about Apple not including the keyboard and mouse/trackpad at all, like... uuuhhhhh. But no harsh comments, this is a great machine.

Depression is a relentless challenge, so I hope you work through it and keep showing the funny side of you on your videos - it makes your channel unique! Personally, I was never tempted by the Ultra (well, maybe for a few minutes), but I ended up ordering then cancelling the Mac Studio Max several times. Like you, I have the MacBook Pro Max 14", so I decided to combine it with the 27" Studio Display, and use it as a desktop in clamshell mode. I'm very happy with the combo, so I hope you can return the Ultra and spend your funds on future dreams offered by Apple. 🤓

These exports make use of the Media engine, not so much of the CPU (or GPU) cores. With benchmarking these exports, you are mostly benchmarking the media engines. The M1 Max and Ultra have more video encode/decode engines but the engines are the same. Maybe the software update is for using multiple encoders working together on the same export? Till that time, you can run multiple export at the same time.

Greg.... What you are alluding to is "The apex of the value curve" thinking.... Personally, I live in that zone. That's why I now have a base model (24 GPU) Mac Studio with a storage goose to 2 TB, and I love it. The incremental improvements in performance (based on my workflow) can't justify another $2k expenditure.

My Mac Studio M1 Ultra was working pretty well when I first got it, but the CPUs are just not being used. This week it's plummeted to 3% usage while rendering in After Effects. I feel like this is more of a problem with the Mac OSX than Adobe After Effects. I have a real upsetting problem on my hands though...

I shoot video with an R5, I just bought a bottom of the line max studio and it kicks butt. Doing the math, it just didn’t make sense to get the ultra.

Way to fight through it, Greg. Brilliant stuff on this vid with the “smack”-talking (pardon the pun) on other RU-vidrs and the Joker line at the end. I still feel the best value are the original M1 Macs and the new MacBook Pros. I think the regular Mac mini is enough for my music recording. I use cloud gaming with Luna and Nvidia’s GeForce Now so most of that boils down to network speed. Here’s hoping for that update to FCP soon 🤞

The only problem I have with the Mac Studio M1 Ultra is the 10-12 week wait time.

The M1 Max also has a 10-12 week wait, if you upgrade to 64GB RAM. I don't *need* 64GB of RAM now. But since it can't be upgraded later, seems like a wiser choice for future-proofing the computer. (sigh) Also, as an American, it can sometimes be a bit challenging to accept that I can't have something the nanosecond I want it. ;)

Greg, love your common sense and entertaining delivery. And I think all of us every so often buy the higher end model even though we don't necessarily need it. It happens. When I do it I just try to enjoy it for what it is. Depression is a lot more widespread than most people realize (or maybe want to admit). Some day/days can be tougher than others. One day at a time. We just do our best not to let it control us, we do what we can to control it. If on some days it wins that battle then tomorrow is a new day. BOL...

I purchased a Mac mini one year before the M1 chip came out and it doesn't have an SDXC slot and it doesn't always reconize the monitor and mouse on startup and some times freezes up and it over heats, so your M1 Ultra Mac Studio sounds wonder full. I meant it would it would be nice to have a built in SDXC slot like the Mac Studio .My 27" I Mac had one.

Every mini since 2010 model has had an HDMI port so don’t know what mini you bought but if didn’t have a HDMI port then is 2009 or older.

I'm more than happy with my new 14" Pro (16gb, 10/16 core), I've never had to wait for anything. Beautiful machine. I've learned the hard way not to bother upgrading until my computer is actually pissing me off. I went through a string of shitty macbooks after I sold my old 2014 15" Pro (it was absolutely fine at the time). I've been through about 3 laptops since and its been a huge waste of time and money. I wouldn't put too much stock in your tests. Maybe it's great at multitasking? Just wait for software to take advantage of the dual chip. Maybe the apps need to be recompiled?

It was worth staying just for the joker ending :) , that was funny mate . On the plus side Greg , even if you have paid for more machine than you need , it is somewhat future proofed , so there is a cost saving in that over X amount of years .

Feel better, Greg! Love your attitude. Honestly, I like how you are objective and up front with your biases toward Apple. Respect for that. Also, that you have an ongoing joke feud with other tech reviewers without getting in your feelings about Linus or others critiquing the Mac and making multiple videos whining about how unfair those critiques were. I had to unsubscribe from those reviewers. But you're being honest, fun, and vulnerable, and depression is no joke. But you are valuable and seeing you put yourself out there is honestly inspiring. I know I've dealt with stuff but I let it stop me from putting myself out there like you are, and honestly I wish I was stronger to create the art I really want to and not let my psyche prevent myself from doing anything, for fear of not executing it perfectly. And hopefully one day I will. But anyway thanks for sharing your perspective and making my day and many others' days better. All the best!

Oh oh ... he’s finally lost it 😳. Greg: I suspect things will get a tad better with a couple of macOS and FCPX releases - but as you say, even if things scaled perfectly you need to have the workload which justifies the machine since the new M1 Max SoCs are so dang performant. On the bright side, you didn’t spend $32K on this system vs. getting a new car, and even if you’re past the return period you could probably still sell an M1 Ultra Studio for a pretty good price. As for the Studio display, I _do_ feel it’s probably the best "reasonably" priced monitor for Mac prosumers - it’s not a plasticy PC monitor and complements a large number of Macs with some sweet features. Again, I expect this to improve with a couple of updates. Good luck ... and take your lithium 😇.

Love your channel Greg, I always look forward to your videos. As someone who slumps into depression sometimes I find a correlation between how active I am outside and how I feel inside. (This may not be the case for you-I don’t mean to come off like the annoying guy who preaches that everything can be cured by a jog). Just throwing the idea out there, it’s easy for me to forget that I’ve been working inside for several days, and to find myself feeling like crap. Man, I sure fricken hope they bring back a 27” iMac for us plebes. I can’t justifying spending 3k on a device that will no doubt be old hat a year from now.

Ultra should be 2x faster as it has double encoders to m1 max 32 core version. Perhaps software doesn't know how to take advantage of dual encoders

Yeah, I noticed that too. I suspect that's deliberate. If you max out the specs for cores and memory for any one model, the next base model up begins to look more like a moderate upgrade, price-wise. I probably don't need the Mac Studio with an M1 Max, but it's not much more than a Mini that's maxed out, so why not pay a bit more for a bit more future-proofing on performance down the road. Plus extra ports, etc.

Early adopter issues galore. It’s very frustrating that Final Cut Pro was not released to take advantage of the ultra… I mean Apple has that in its own control, and it was an essential benchmark at release, but no we can’t do that. Software optimization is a big deal and because of that I still consider the plain old original M1 chip to be more of an early adopter situation too. It works well but until more software is released to make full use of Apple Silicon it is a good enough machine via Rosetta Stone 2.

A lot of people will be returning this, just like you did. I’ve seen other RU-vidrs saying they are returning it for the Max Studio. I think most people can’t squeeze the most out of it because they can’t throw anything hard enough. On the other hand, devt3ch is a software developer who actually can load a Mac Studio Ultra, but he’s the only one I’ve seen for whom that is the case. All the best.
