Martin, I am studying in aircraft design and one of the thing we learned was that designing something has an iterative process to it. The reason behind that is that you can always refine the design, make it 10%, 5%, 1% better by marginal gains. Although i thought the design of planes was perfect all the way through, my studies showed me that the planes flying nowadays are far from being designed to the perfection. The chief engineers sometimes have to tell their engineers "okay your design might be able to be 2% more efficient if you work for 10 more months but we need to deliver the design next week". I feel like I am seeing a version of that in the MMX project of you trying to make every component of it 100% perfect. It is definitely not a bad thing as you are converging towards the optimal solution but maybe it is sane sometimes to not scrap parts which are 98% perfect to make a 100% version of it. In aviation the rules are written in blood and all the experience gathered by engineers before is put towards the next generation aircraft. For the MMX you are trying to anticipate all the risks and issues but maybe you should try seeing them happen? Finally, i wanted to say that you are assessing the reliability of the MMX only in the funtion "play the marbles" but maybe you should also think about assessing its reliability in the other type of functions such as "being able to compose", "changing the song" and so on. It would be a shame that during the world tour you can reliably play 1000000 marbles but have something that brakes or malfunctions once every 10 song changing. Anyway maybe that could help you! Your work is really inspirational and good luck to you and Wilson ! :)

I'm pretty sure he already has that on his list, hence the steel programming plates with welded on bolts for example. He probably will move on to such tests once all instruments are implemented.
@BrunodeSouzaLino
@BrunodeSouzaLino 3 года назад
Perfect is the enemy of good. On the MMX, you can see that fixing one issue not only doesn't solve the problem initially, but introduces new problems that didn't exist before. Martin is too focused on getting all aspects perfect forgetting that his design doesn't allow for that. That machine doesn't have any fault tolerance built into it, despite he convincing himself that it is reliable or that will reach a level of reliability that is impossible. He convinced himself he can do that and will most likely spend the rest of his life never achieving that goal.
@ussarng4649
@ussarng4649 3 года назад
Maybe not, ... there are features on the marble machine that allow for composing and changing songs. Also this is the first marble machine of this type, so yeah Martin is really fussing over it, but not over much (in my opinion). At first in reality he was learn how to make a marble machine. Now he knows a lot about how to build a marble machine and is now refining the MMX not so much his building skills. It isn't like there have been such musical instruments for hundreds of years and he is ignoring those and in a manner of speaking trying to "reinventing the wheel". I think it won't be over long until this Marble Machine is done. It being done doesn't preclude the possiblity of later versions being adjusted and tweaked.

Martin: I'm not against prototyping a redesign for the divide by 4, but I DO request that you wait until you have most of the channels operational before you actually consider doing it. Because the more channels you have running, the less activity the divide by 4 sees, and I suspect that a fully operational MMX will use that function very little. So the problems it's causing now might be an overrepresentation of how "fragile" it is
@claytonfs
@claytonfs 3 года назад
This! He should stop focusing on problems that may not be problems when the machine is being used as intended.
@YeaSeb.
@YeaSeb. 3 года назад
in fact, the marble test should end with a different rating for every part depending on how overestimated their testing will be. Like how the marble drops and funnels for the 4 channels he has working and the divide by 4 are doing more work than the mable divider in these test compared to an actual song with all channels enabled.
@dovayaj9023
@dovayaj9023 3 года назад
With the current tube configuration at the top, it seems as though the early vibraphone channels receive marbles only from the divide-by-4. While this shouldn't create a marble supply issue if the other instruments don't play too much, I just wanted to put it out there that the divide-by-4 will need to function quite a bit to supply the vibraphone.
@robertcarlson8867
@robertcarlson8867 3 года назад
I'm with Martin on this one. You can't design just for the average case; you need to cover all the edge cases you can too. If there's a song that has, say, a long bass solo, these issues could definitely pop up again with the divide-by-4.
@TheJohnreeves
@TheJohnreeves 3 года назад
I had a big paragraph explaining why you're wrong, but I argued myself to the point that I agree. I guess the function of the divide by four is to have marbles circulating as soon as the song starts. If the main divider holds enough, that shouldn't be necessary.

Another quick trick for using setscrews without causing damage on a soft part: Make your hole a little larger than the PMMA pipes, and insert a metal "shim" between the plastic and the set screw. The shim can be made from rolled strip metal, or by slicing and slotting a metal tube. If the shim is thick enough, it will clamp down evenly in all directions when pushed by the set screw.

I know nothing about actual engineering but one of my favorite things has always been brain storming or trouble shooting problems people have (outdoor field research often involves adapting or modifying something someone invented for one purpose to use it for what you need). So it does my heart good when someone who knows more than me suggests a solution that popped right into my mind! I couldn't do any of the technical stuff but those little moles are right up my alley (or lane, if you will)
@2lian

NGL, I love the divide by 4, but your arguments makes sens. I would let it on though. Test it more thoroughly as you continue working on the machine, because, as for now, it worked great. I think that you have much bigger ploblem on the machine to overcome. Focusing on this little easy (maybe) problem may be satisfying now, but could be a mistake in the long run because the divide by 4 is cool. Stick a note on it saying "Big Martin is watching you" and when time comes, decide of its fate. Mabe he will be scared and work like a charm.

Be aware that surfaces will wear over time, changing the characteristics of things like gears and balances and counterweights (especially with wood and plastic parts). This is why machines are designed to be a bit "stiff" out of the factory and need to be "broken in" before everything will move smoothly.

But I feel like it's totally fine for it to drop some marbles here and there. Agree, I think Martin is a bit obsess on not letting any marbles falling from the machine and also obsess on making the divided by 4 stairs picking up all 4 marbles at all times It do pile up a bit however the stacked up marbles are very unlikely to overflow at the rear of the pipe, as someone mentioned, with 30 channels or so, those will also pickup by other channels before reaching the pipe that lead to the divided by 4 steps. Also, the marbles will not fall out of the machine simply because of not having marbles on the steps~

Its okay to focus on function over form, and maybe its just sunken cost fallacy speaking, but it seems to me that you're just sacrificing years of effort to make the MMX become the MMY. Calm down, you just had good progress on the divide by 4. The moment it started to fail again was exactly when you introduced a previous problem back in it with a temporary piece that didn't belong there. The divide by 4 and fish stairs work well enough as they are.

You're breaking my heart Martin :( I think it's all those cool, functional, but interesting and beautiful mechanisms like the divide by 4 that make the marble machine what it is. From its initial design, it's not made as efficiently and functionally as it could be. It's a piece of art as much as it is a machine. With this and the recent funnel designs, I fear you are going to strip away it's character. Who am I to tell you how to build your masterpiece though. You're the artist, you do you.

This machine you are building is not perfect, but it has character. It being a bit whacky and having some "silly" marble paths is the reason so many people decided to follow this journey. Maybe that sounds easier than it is, but "why don't you just" make the pipes coming from the divider a little steeper? Raising the divider by a few millimeters could suffice to load the stairs with slightly more force, which it looked like (to me) could fix your problems

@@L3K1P The thing to consider with that is raising the divide by 4 raises the front sloping pipe which raises the marble divider. Needing to raise it too much could cause a redesign of a large part of the machine. The better solution would be to bend the pipes ever so slightly down by the fish stair as to increase the speed at which they roll at then end, without changing the rest of the machine.

@KnowArt
@KnowArt 3 года назад
Yes, redesign of this divider seems needed. This look vulnerable, as whenever one marble gets stuck at the stairs it will eventually lead to the divide-by-four to stop working on all channels at once, instead of just that one blocked channel. Or did I miss something? Maybe the divider works different than I can see
@ODDnanref
@ODDnanref 3 года назад
It's a bit more resilient than that I think. If the length of tube is long to fit an exact number (no marble half in) or leave the last marble out of the tube by a large number then it just gets pushed to the next one or simply ignored. Sure you have one les channels but it should still work.
@ameunier41
@ameunier41 3 года назад
@@ODDnanref can the other channel be filled when one is full?
@ODDnanref
@ODDnanref 3 года назад
@@ameunier41 Like I said, it depends on how the marbles end up. I rewatched the video and in this case a marble got stuck while attempting to enter the channel. The pusher (whatever it is called, that makes the marbles enter the channels) got stuck on returning to rest until another marble pushed the stuck marble further back. A full channel, might not prevent marbles from being delivered to other channels. It is the whole reason why he has modules on the top of the machine and why he wants marbles flush. If the a similar effect can be achieved on the 4 way splitter channels then it might not matter. Either way, this discussion is purely hypothetical as he is reworking on that entire part of the machine.

The current system is quite close to working, is beautiful and may take less time to get working than starting anew. Using a stiff rubber, silicone or felt instead of sheet metal strips to guide the marbles into the stair would do a lot for reducing noise. Adding curvature to that strip, conforming to the shape of the marble instead of a flat strip may also help in preventing the marbles from moving to the side as they enter they fish stair. Also instead of the tape on the bottom fish stair attaching a larger guide to the pipes covering both the side of the pipes and the bottom fish stair might work better. I'm curious, how many marbles are in the system in total? Is there a way to calculate the likely hood that the staircase occasionally going up with only 2 or 3 marbles would cause a channel to be empty and unable to play a note? Would adding more marbles to the system make it more resilient? I've been following this epic since the very beginning and am starting to feel the melancholy one feels towards the end of a great book. The machine really feels like it is getting close. While I know that you need to finish this machine for the sake of your sanity, and I'm looking forward to seeing you in Ottawa Canada on the world tour, I'm gonna miss this mix of engineering and art that speaks right to my soul. Thank you to you and Hannes these daily videos. Best thing to happen this decade!

IDEA: have different modules you can swap in when you need. A simple marble tray for the stair lift for consistency and performance and the divide by the 4 for music videos/final stage song. So why not have spare modules that function the same but have different pros and cons. Like even a drum or visual fingers can be swapped in when needed. Hi Martin, honestly, running 100,000 marbles is a fruitless effort. Remember, a machine's "life" is built to run for only a finite number of cycles. I'm not sure what you expect to gain, other than you may have to start replacing parts that have already met their quota of cycles. From an Agile POV - it's time to start giving the marble machine it's voice. Fixing and enhancement will come. Plus, you need to test how the machine performs when actually making music.

As a software engineer, I know that developing something is a constant refactoring process. However I’m begging you to stop fixing issues that are not really an issue. Yet... when you add all of the vibraphone tracks you will have a great number of new issues. Marbles not filling up certain channels due to the speed of marbles through certain channels. The drums could stop playing due to a intense melodic part. Yes this is theoretical, and I know you have a solution for evening out marbles in the marble divider. Can't wait for the next big test! Hopefully we'll get to see it this week. I'm not really sure why the "divide-by-4" is nessaccary? Why couldn't it just be a basin like where the conveyor picks up the marbles? Sure, the farthest tube would fill up quicker than the rest and it wouldn't be even, but that would remove the need for balancing and it would remove the noise. And, the rest of the set up wouldn't need to be changed, so it would be a relatively quick fix I think.
