Would love a video on the history of chess and how strategies have changed. You could do a sample of games through the past highlighting the differences.
Gary Chess is the founder of chess. He founded chess in 1998 with his friends Nakamura Hikaru and Big Magnus. Gary Chess is the father of Anna Chess and AlexChess3000. During the Great Chess war, Gary Chess repelled the indian invaders lead by Vishy Vishy. The fight was close but Garry Chess used his en passant to win against the indians. His Berlin wall was too high for Ruy Lopez to go over and the Chess war was over with a victory for the blacks. Following the Great Chess War, Garry Chess was knighted by Bobby Chess.
I don't think it's too involved. originally, people studied games and created / tested new lines on their own based off the most current "best" lines of the time. then computers happened. what I'm curious is what's next
Realistically speaking, I think someone will be able to dethrone Carlsen by then. Firouzja or Giri or some other young Indian and Russian player. In the coming two years, the growth of some underrated players during covid will actually be on paper. Let's see.
Me watching GothamChess drunk at 3am: “Ah yes, of course. The best possible move.” Me playing chess the next day: “Qxa6. Oh. I have blundered... everything.”
32:38 I've noticed the same thing as well, watching games between Carlson and Nakamura. Nakamura plays too defensively and usually ends up locking his own pieces into defending positions they can't get out of without being taken. It's almost like he is afraid of Carlson and his fear inhibits his chess.
Great timing as usual Mr. Gotham. Was about to sit down to dinner, and now I have some quality entertainment after a horrible day. Thanks for the stellar work ethic!
32:35 I'm always thinking the same thing about Hikaru when he is playing agaisnt Carlsen. He turns to defensive mode, turns into a shell of himself and just plays subpar. That's not how he usually plays!
3:40 Levy: by some miracle sees it. I can’t see queens coming from 2-3 squares away. Me: ME TOO!! Levy: I’m joking of course trying to make sure you’re still awake. Me: Oh yea totally. Me too😐
im curious what reactions GMs have when seeing Levi's recaps, especially when he talks trash as the player. great commentary. really helps put a new level of understanding in the game, even if its just for comedic value
Magnus is a beast and probably the best ever. Hikaru is really good at fast time control and maybe has been #2 a lot of times in those time controls but overall Magnus is freaking goated.
So fascinating that the knight move was missed in the Aronian/Radjabov game, I always think of super GMs as these untouchable computer-esque people & it just brings them back down to earth, love to see it
thanks for giving me permission to skip around the video! jokes aside, I really appreciate the extra effort to put time stamps in the video, many thanks
"has anyone ever done that in mixed martial arts?" Yes. Or, sort of. Broken hands? Absolutely yes for MMA and boxing both. Broken arm? This gets a little more cloudy. People have gone on to win fights with a broken arm but didn't win it WITH that arm. Although they may have thrown some punches or elbows with it in the process. So maybe. I'll give that a yes*.
I think his record against magnus also has to do with the fact he's played him so much. PRetty sure everyone would suffer from the law of averages if they played Magnus 20+ times.
About the question at 17:00. Yes, there is at least one guy that beat another with a broken arm, sure, in a BJJ combat, but both were mma/ufc elite eventually. Jacare Souza win with a broken arm against Roger Gracie. And he did the same against Andre Muniz, this time in a MMA combat
Finally FINALLY realized what the goatee, high hair and glasses reminded me of, it's young Leon Trotsky. You have the look to accomplish big things in future Levy!
I don't know if I'm hearing things, but it sounds like levy is sounding more naturally like a GM in this recap. Like his training is working. He is breezing through the explanations of when the positions get intricate easier than I have ever heard him do. Definently feeling optimistic for him, and proud of his progress.
He probably has a small team or support network. Not to take away from his incredible content or anything. I can't believe how clean his takes are and how he can make long videos consistently entertaining. But they deserve praise too.
If this is the right place to leave it, would you consider a video comparing the difference between bishops and knights? I know you mostly reference bishops as being better than knights, but I think an explanation as to how each piece stands in a given position would be useful. Also my brother claimed that knights are “statistically more useful than bishops are” and I want to know if that’s outright false.
Bishops are statistically more useful than Knights. When placed on optimal squares, bishops can attack 7 squares in the opponents half of the board, while knights can only attack 6. A bishop simply has greater scope. Yes, a knight can influence both color squares on the board, while a single bishop only influences one color, but the bishop can be effective from a distance and can fly across the entire board in 1 move. Also, the bishop can halt an entire pawn chain from ever advancing. Another thing to note is that 2 bishops can force a checkmate; two knights cannot. And speaking of 2 bishops vs 2 knights, this is where the comparison is no longer even close. In the case of the bishop pair, the main advantage of the knight being able to influence either color is negated as the bishop pair owner now has access to both color squares. The bishop pair blows away two knights, or even a knight and bishop. This of course is all from a theoretical standpoint, to prove that statically bishops are superior to knights. But of course on a game by game, position by position basis, the real answer varies depending on the position. Sometimes a well placed knight on an outpost can be completely overwhelming. In closed positions, the knight thrives as it is able to jump over other pieces, but when the position opens up, and diagonals are cleared for the bishops - the bishops reign supreme. In endgames where all pawns are only on one side of the board, knights can be very powerful. In endgames where pawns are on either flank, bishops are far better. As far as coordination goes, queen+knight is generally stronger than queen+bishop. Each piece has their pros and cons, but statistically speaking, bishops will be better than knights, and in particular, the bishop pair is far more powerful than a knight pair. So your brother is dead wrong.
loved the recap, youre always helping i understand why are they making those crazy moves, you are awesome keep up with the good work and the journey for the GM title best chess RU-vidr streamer whatever youre good just know that
At 37:19 is it better for Hikaru to play Rd8 with idea of Rh8 next ??? Looks winning to me, or at least, if Magnus defends with Kh7 than Hikaru can repeat Rg7 - Rg8 perpetualy
I'm not sure if any MMA fight has had someone with a broken arm win, but I do know that Kurt Angle won the freestyle wrestling gold metal with broken freakin neck in 1996
tbh to Hikaru, playing against the GOAT (not an opinion ;)) especially after having just lost a game, it is understandable why it can be hard to find the confidence to try and play aggressively if you dont intend to not lose on time due to calculations before committing
I enjoy watching you narrate gm rapid and blitz games because I feel that I learn more about basic positioning at its highest level when the guys that have it mapped out are hit with the clock
On the topic of hitting someone with a broken arm in a fight - Paul Felder continued to spam spinning backfists against Mike Perry after breaking is forearm in the first round.
17:03 Well idk if this counts, but Robert Whittaker broke his hand in the first round and kept fighting against Yoel Romero till the last round at UFC 225. The fight was insane
Absolutely unrelated F1 Ferrari drivers carlos sainz and charles leclerc played each other in chess and there was a video made on it. Maybe a short video on where you’d put them based on play?
"what is the difference between 4 and 2 TWO what is the difference between 3 and 1 TWO but 2 is not = to 2 welcome to gotham chess recap" -Gotham "Do as I say and NOT as I do" -Gotham
This was frustrating to watch Hikaru didn’t use the anti-Magnus strategy which is to make the position super insane and try to out calculate him. Well he did in one but they blundered back and forth into a draw but other than that he let Magnus do his “I’m the King of positional chess.” performance and just slowly crush you to death.
Yes, we know, magnus used hikaru, humiliate him, brainwashed him, wound him like a tin soldier and turned him loose against twitch chat. Also slapped him, insulted him, touched him, whispered into his ears, licked it, spat it inside, so what! Cry me a river.
Actully, Hikaru is at Magnus' level, especially when it comes to rapid. Magnus is the champ, of course, but just because there is only ever 1 world champion, grandmasters can talk shop amongst themselves, on their shared level, just fine.
@@gladosadoree No he isn't depending how you look at it. Magnus and Hiakru are probalby clooser in skill than Levy and Hikaru... Hikaru is excellent, but literally has the worst record against magnus, because he's played him so much. You play enough games against Magnus... law of averages... and he will dominate any player on earth.
@@JunkBondTrader We're talking a bit semantics here, I think, regarding being 'on the same level.' Way I see it, it doesn't mean 'equally strong' per se, but more like 'in the same league.' Like Levy and other IMs can be said to be on the same level. If we cannot use 'on the same level' in that manner, we'd basically have to define a custom word for every level for every individual player in the world (other than rating) -- which is, at the least, rather impractical. Magnus is the goat, though; that much is certain. :)
I dont think it's that the engine didn't know what's best. It's just that neither played the absolute best attack and defense that the engine did see. The engine later recalulated as the humans played less ideal moves
I get that most people, including myself, would not be able to foresee what was going on here, calling Nd7 "slightly" sub optimal is a ridiculous understatement.
