Dimensions of the Hex Nut Driver that are most common in Europe - 4mm, 5.5mm, 7mm, 8mm, 10mm, 13mm.

no one has ever had too many tools but at one time or another everyone has not had the right tools. the main limiter for tools that I have come across is a place to store them. the kitchen table is not considered a good place by everyone.

I recently bought the A9 camera from AliExpress. It is a complete con as there are no IR LEDs, it just switches to monochrome when night vision is selected. It is not HD, just 640 x 480 upscaled, and not a wide-angle lens.

As a Dutch, I actually only have that 5,5mm driver for M3 hardware. Maybe a driver for M2.5 would be handy but other than that I'm good as far as electronics.

Nut and wrench sizes for metric, 2mm = 4, 2.5mm=5, 3mm=5.5, 4mm=7, 5mm=8, 6mm=10, 8mm=13, 10mm=17, 12mm=19 (thread size then wrench size)

For electronics, m2.5, m3, m3.5 m4, and m5 are most common. On rare occasions, you might need m6, but m6 is almost a key and not a nut. For some reasons, 0.5 increments are common on standoffs received with parts.

Get the nut driver set. Better to have it when you need the odd metric driver, than to strip the nut.

7mm is about 1/4" and 10mm is about 3/8" these are the 2 I use often on laptops.

A pizerow+cam, in a 3d upright enclosure can make fully configurable IP camera ... but ... you will be in $20 for that.

Everything is mostly metric here in Oz, except for plumbing and some carpentry stuff. We don’t teach it in schools anymore so it must be a bit of an adjustment for our trade apprentices when they first start out. Good call on the camera app - potentially very dodgy! 👍😀

Some M4 fittings are always usable when M3 is too small and M5 is too big. Just be careful going below M3 as fittings get difficult to handle.

I have the A9 cam. First thing first i have changed on board antenna to proper one. Nrf24 antennas are dirt cheap and working really great. It's easy to modify. Next , i have detached the battery and using it directly from USB. The camera gets really hot for long use and the battery is placed over the MCU. That may explode and unsafely placed really. Night vision is not so good for long range and at night ir leds make camera even hotter. It streams over RTSP and not so easy to watch over HomeAssistant. But works great over internet from anywhere since it streams over cloud if it is connected to internet. So be aware of privacy

@@pileofstuff you can connect the camera's wifi to locally watch but that's it. Otherwise you have to use cloud services

You might be able to convert those relays back to dip if you bend their pin downwards...

You can get surface mount to DIP adapters that I've used before for 8 pin op-amps. They might work, but you have to solder the SMD device to it anyway. So not saving much unless you want to use DIP sockets.

I'm not a fan of these nut-drivers. I use a socket set with every size that exists in metric. A straight handle for the 1/4 inch sockets and you're golden. Using a ratchet is a nice option as well.

I have a socket set out in the garage, and have been using it as needed, but having a few common tools in the house saves me from the needed tool always being in the other location.

On the subject of metric hardware, here in the states, metric seems to be only available in stainless steel. That, of course, makes the price skyrocket. However, the real reason I am typing is your comment on "phone home" when examining the small camera. I was not aware of such a built-in function. Could you elaborate in a separate RU-vid video? I am curious as to what danger I might face from the fine engineers in China.

I also got this camera on a sale for 3€. Works fine in AP Mode. But if you can find out if it phones home please let us know. I might use it then in client mode.

Hi I am in the UK , M1 ,M1.2 ,M1,4 & M1.6 are very small but can be used for small slide switches etc. For most electronics ' jobs' M2 , M2.5 & M3 will work . For larger mains transformers M4 is needed . I have M5 ,M6 ,M8 ,M10 & M12 in my 'stock' also but they are more for DIY stuff . M3.5 is used for mains light switches and sockets etc here in the UK . Glad to see the penggong nut drivers still available. I’ve been using the 5.5 and 7 for years now on various Ricoh digital presses. They’re a tenth of the price of what it costs to buy similar nut drivers here in Alberta. My advice is just buy ‘‘em as you find need…someday we’ll be able to buy metrics tools and hardware here in Canada at a reasonable price (probably from USA, LOL)

In electronics I find 2.5mm very ocasionally, but M3, M4 and M6, possibly M5 come to be used. The M2.5 are harder to get, and smaller screw and nuts hardware even more so, possibly in Eyeglasses repair kits. In general household/garden use and standard sizes in hardware store start typically with M6, M8 and M10, though M12 and larger also available, for me tend to be bigger than what I use, and if so I tend to use spanners rather than driver format for M10 and larger, though have had M10 in a recessed case and the driver was needed as standard socket set was too thick for the recess entry space. In recent cases M6 and M8 have been most common in garden.

Raspberry Pi mounts are notably M2.5, as well as some DOGM/LCD displays. Nigh impossible to find M2 and M2.5 over the counter here in the US.

5.5mm is a must have, a M3 nut is 5.5mm across flats as you say. should always have one in the draw.

would imagine an 8 mm nut driver might come in handy for bleeding brakes and would definately recomend getting 10 mm and 12 mm hec if you have the budget probably best to get a set and be done with it and then add if there is an obscure value outside your range for a special use case say an elevator (off hand) i can understand not wanting to go over board but when you need it youll be glad you have it, much like an ifix it kit or ltt screw driver (just saying) cheerrs dave

I find M3 M4 M5 M6 cover most of the hardware on 3D printers and electronics devices, so you'll need drivers for the corresponding nut sizes. anything bigger than M6 is probably better handled with a small C spanner.

They are the most common for hardware, if it was a car, I would recomend 8mm, 10mm,12mm, ( 13mm is half inch ) 15mm and impact sockets for 15mm and up. The camera I would love to see a teardown and if it can be connected to the Arduino IDE and an attempt to " auto detect ". I have had some, not much, luck having it detect ESP32 type chips and reprogram them. Thank you for yet another interesting Mailbag Monday.

Our hardware shops in OZ are Whitworth(BSW) and metric, ie, leaning more toward Whitworth. But the engineering shops are mainly metric, with small amounts of everything else, ie, US and British. We needed UNC for US cars and BSW for UK cars, but I think most are metric these days.

It looks like you could use the smd relays on a perf board? The pis look like the are about 0.1" spacing or close enough.

Careful soldering onto the terminals of those crappy little switches. It's way too easy to overheat then its permanently stuck on or off

For metric fasteners.. I use M2 and 2.5 for switch mounting. 2.5 are common in laptops. M3 for general mounting hardware.. Heat-sinks, case screws etc. M6 M7 and M8 for pots, switches, encoders and the like. I have a few M1 and M1.2 screws, but haven't used them outside mounting a little geared motor to a printed bracket. Some will say get the set. And if you are coming across lots of different sizes.. Sure. Personally, I'm not going to be in such a hurry I need an M12 nut spinner NOW!!!!!!!! And for me at least... Space is finite. So is money. For 3D printing.. I find most of the fasteners are M3. So a handled ball end hex, a spanner and a nut driver fills the needs. Add a tap if you foresee making your own holes in stuff. Best option... When you find yourself using a size more than once. Buy the required tooling.

@@pileofstuff A short review could be interesting. I looked up couple from another channels and I can see reasons it is not top notch, it is a $8 camera after all. But sometimes even not so good remote video (realtime) is still quite useful. Sure, if I want the top notch video, I'd go for my way more expensive cams.

I'm in UK, my advice if you don't want the whole set is the get a set of metric bits with all the sizes, then only buy individual nutdrivers for the sizes you use most often Even thoug i come across a lot of metric, i don't own a set of nutdrivers, i just use bits You can put bits in any compatible driver, including electric, caan't do that with a nutdriver ;)
