.
. See all the equipment we put on the airplane, and inquire about your own project! newviewtech.com/aoa/ The panel project for our Cessna 172 is coming to a close, with all the avionics and tests being completed. It’s been a fun process so far, flying all the way from Alaska to Wisconsin in a bold and big plan to get the panel and these avionics upgraded to IFR.
After a lot of previous work in designing the new Cessna 172 avionics and panel, the last bits are coming together. Not only do we put in all the new instruments, but we have to do other tests before everything can be wrapped up. We need to get this thing flying!
Last time we showed you the leather wrapped yokes, the single piece CNC cut instrument panel, newly restored paint, and more.
This time we still have a lot of work to do. We’ll be following schematics to put all the pieces together to spec, powering up the airplane for the first time and seeing it all happen, and more. This aviation technology is just crazy.
Sara, a former student of mine, came to hang out and see the progress of the panel. It was great to see her. She flew in a plane she rented from Madison.
The aircraft pitot static system had to go through IFR Certification. Bruce, the owner of NewView Technologies where we’re getting the modernized, did the test. He hooks up tubes that add pressure to the system, then checks the different tolerances for the instruments.
We got new lighting done in the airplane with overhead and map lights from WAT. We also have much of it on a dimmer. That means we have a master dimmer for many of the instruments and radios.
Rosen Visors are a much better solution for our visors. We got the 3 AXIS version to replace what we had before, and we’re really happy with the solution.
With all the new equipment on this Cessna 172, we had to do a new weight and balance. This was one of the most difficult things we had to do the entire time.
While the airplane was leveled, we also calibrated the fuel senders. This will give us accurate fuel readings for the first time. The digital fuel senders are very accurate, giving us a reliable source for our fuel levels.
Want to be a pilot? Take online ground school and do checkride prep with us at www.AngleofAttack.com

Color scheme is awesome. Love how you re-did the yoke. Avionics are awesome too! Overall, great project and I am glad I was able to tag along on the journey through your videos. Two questions, are you videoing the trip home and are you going to be at OshKosh Air Show this year? Going to OshKosh for the first time and would love to stop by and say hello!

As you took us along for all the work, we could see the devotion they were putting into 23 Uniform, certainly above and beyond a 9 to 5 job. Hey Chris, I love your channel, your IFR ground school helped me get my instrument rating after 27 years of VFR flying, but this latest video prompted me to comment. We had a similar panel upgrade on our 1968 Mooney last year and I can relate to how emotional it can be and the amount of work that goes into a project like this. Thanks for sharing so much and showing the juman side of this project. It’s the village that brings a project like this together and they are special people indeed. Please keep up the great work and I look forward to the next chapter.

So awesome to be able to watch 23U go through this transformation. When I was working on my PPL all of this technology was very new and wasn't very common in training aircraft. It's amazing how fast companies like Garmin were able to adapt these new modern avionics to fit perfectly in a panel without having massive glass displays, yet still providing all the same pertinent information. Can't wait for future videos showcasing all the capabilities of the panel setup. Thanks again for bringing us along on this journey!

We would average one Bonanza a day, a Baron a week and have 2-3 King Airs and Dukes a month for various work. It looks like nothing has changed in all these years. Except what type of avionics go in the panel.

I love the new powder coated panel. They could have just installed all the same stuff into your plane and it wouldn't look anything like it does. Is that a new dash on top of the whole panel as well? Looks so good and love the heartfelt moment. I got into facility maintenance a few years ago and things going wrong is just the nature of the beast. It could be doing electrical, plumbing, drywall and sometimes it goes right and a lot of the time it doesn't. In the end it will be done right, but it can be stressful getting there.

Hi Chris, great video as usual. You are such a thoughtful caring person. So many questions, so little time. Did the airplane lose weight? If so how much? Did the airplane sit long enough with the engine not running that you have to worry about corrosion of the cam, lifters and cylinders? If so did you take any action to pickle the engine? I know that in Alaska you have been running auto gas, on your trip south you put on at least 50 hours with 100 LL, did you notice the oil getting dirtier faster? As part of the makeover, did you put in a four place intercom? With Bluetooth? Can the C145 take a Powermaster exhaust? If the autopilot is not installed does that mean another long cross country to Oshkosh?

Excellent video!! What is the melody of the tattoo on Jessica's arm? Also how did the weight change? When my 172M was weighed, it was a lot heavier than the calculated weight had been for so many years and a bit of a disappointment on the loss of usable load!! Also, very smart to change the throttle and mixture cables. I didn't do that on my panel upgrade and now learn that the throttle cable needs to be replaced so I will likely go with the McFarlane vernier throttle cable as well!!

The song on Jessica's arm is the piano melody from Clocks by Coldplay. Spirals around my arm to the repeat.

Just one of those things that wasn't going to cost a lot but made a huge difference.

17:29 - 1,097!!! What else did you take out? Our '61 172B C-FMVU is undergoing a similar process, new panel, new interior, paint stripped, engine mods to make it lighter... when we started empty weight was 1,333. Finished it today, and it goes on the scales tomorrow; I was hoping for a weight around 1,200. But maybe 1,100 is a possibility.

That's uncalibrated. And the airplane wasn't level like it should have been yet. That set of scales has an algorithm of some kind that gets the actual weight.

No. We added so much new stuff that wasn't there that it was basically a wash.
