Which pedal would you feed this amp with?
@MarcBecker_Music
@MarcBecker_Music 3 года назад
I'd set the amp to where it starts to break up, Marshall clean so to say, set up an EarthQuaker Devices Acapulco Gold in front of it, turn the knob till it pushes the Plexi really hard and starts to sound brutal and broken, dial the volume on the guitar back to 6 or 7 to get rid of too much low compressed tone, and Bob's your Uncle. That's what I like to do with my 1987X.

the 9v pedals wouldnt be ideal. something like TC integrated pre which is 18/36v would be a great clean boost and an even more great way to cut the lows and just drive the front end of that plexi.

Does the Plexi break up like the JCM800? Seems like I like cranked JCM800 tones better but haven't heard enough people trying to capture a cranked plexi metal tone on youtube. I wish I could afford an old 2203! Cranked amp tone seems to be the thing I need in my life. I play technical Death Metal and want a modernish tone but with power tube saturation and tons of compression and liquid tremolo-picked palm mutes that sound like one long churning miasma.
@TJK_Audio
@TJK_Audio 3 года назад
Great demo - this is a prime example of how you can get different flavors out of the same amp without a lot of $ and time. I've had success with a KTR in front of a high gain amp to bring in some great saturation - people tend to use it as a clean boost but playing with the settings all around opens up a whole world of interesting tones.

Contrary to popular myth; channel-jumping on a 4-holer will half the gain... not double it. The first two gain stages on a Super Lead are running in parallel... not cascaded in series as they are on a two-input Master Volume 2203/2204. #TheMoreYouKnow

Don't be fooled kids, there is no such thing as a jcm800 plexi!! This is a fake video. A real Plexi sounds best on 10, not this phoney 9 o'clock is the sweet spot. This is fake!!! Real users know a pedal is used just to boost signal, all the best sounds of a real Plexi come from the amp, a rat tube screamer etc. all try to emulate what a real Plexi already does. 1987SL, 1959SL or bass and PA versions of the JMP and JTM are the real thing. This guy is pushing fake information!!!

The Necrovore demo from 1987 was a 1974 Marshall Superlead no pedals Ibanez Iceman > Marshall Superlead Halfstack (Cabinet same era stick) and a Marshal 3210 MOSFET100 into a JCM800 cabinet stock with a MXR 6 band eq in fx loop. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ScoGir1SgqI.html I used to own on of those JCM800 Superleads. What tubes do you have in it. The sweet spot on mine was Vol I :3.5-4, and Vol II: 4. Try a Marshall Drive Master pedal in the front set as a boost. Eq to taste. Then roll in the gain just til you can hear it working. Then again I set my amp closer to an 80s UG metal tone for fast picking.

I love the Goat but having a very tight budget after having C19 permanently kill my day job I found a poor man's Goat. It is the defunct Rocktron Zombie Rectified. The critics hated when it was out because it didn't sound like a MESA Dual Rectified. They are right it doesn't. BIG but! Like the Goat it has a synthetic but very effective sound. The sound is very similar to the Goat. In context in a track I am sure you could not tell. They can be found anywhere between $50 to $200.

I grew up on nu-metal and deathgrind. Both had dirtier guitars than most djent and metalcore nowadays (but also most deathgrind nowadays too). This is not an offence, just a historical difference I noticed. I prefer the hard rock/nu-metal song structure nowadays, so I look up for that guitar tone (and that variation of overall song energy and texture).

A really cool vst just released from fuse audio labs ( also German 🙂) called dozerdrive. A fuzz face and a tube screamer combined, can be parallel with mix knob or series with a choice to fuzz screamer or screamer fuzz. Has some cool switches for mods to give the screamer more balls or the fuzz more destruction. Goes from polite to really rude and everywhere in between.

TS + RAT is the killer combination here imo. Very interesting!

When you used the rat with the tube screamer, the tone you created really reminds me of my old Peavey XXX. I miss that amp, what a KILLER tone! Herzlichen Glückwunsch!

I love my XXX, after 20 years still my favorite. Just face melting without any need for preamp pedals.

I recently tried the 2204 model on my Helix, and god damn does that thing scream when set right Boost out front, gain at 3 (adjust to taste), crank the bass, middle, treble, and BIAS (yup, the bias) to 10, and tweak from there

Just tried to recreate in Helix chain with a TS > RAT>Brit Plexi Jump amp + some tweaking and it sounds too close to this video. Great!!!

Well done, once I get my attenuator I’ll give this a go with my reissued plexi. Way to loud on its own.

Kohle, you really gotta try a telecaster, with single coils, esp the neck pickup.

Kristian do you put the Tube Screamer before the RAT or after. I have an original RAT and a Chandler/Butler rack mount Tube Screamer on my board and was curious as to the order you used with the Plexi. I have a vintage JMP 100 Super Lead. Also I put a mattress pad , batting , in my Hiel 4/12 top box and really tightened it up . Thinking about doing the same to my Marshall stack. Any thoughts? They make a hand wired 59 Plexi reissue at Marshall

It would be really nice if you’d make a video on how to get nasty tones with a friedman BE-100deluxe! I recently got one and it is awesome! Periphery used one on the III album, and polaris recorded “the mortal coil” with it! I’m sure it was used on a lot other records aswell!

This video is giving me serious GAS for a plexi. What are your thoughts on the 1987x, would it work the same as your vintage plexi?

Ohh yeah this is what i need, my friend were selling this 4 holes jcm 800 and i ask him is that plexi with more gain??? He dosnt sure since he never play a plexis, but he said its different than a jcm800 2203. And suddenly ur video in my timestamp... what a coincidence... nice!!!

I probably shouldn't be trying to give you tips, but I get extremely brutal tones with my 68 50 watt Plexi/1987, that broken sound in the low-end your hearing, a big part of that is coming from jumping your channels, plug straight into the high treble Channel with no jumper you will get more gain and it will be a hell of a lot tighter, even though you're not plugged into the normal Channel the normal Channel volume will still affect the tone, I find I like it best around 3 or 4 Max for a metal tone, the high treble Channel I run at 8 or 7, this will give you a fat enough sound with plenty of highs and cut, another trick is to run the present High and the treble low this will give you more gain as well but I generally run it with presents around 3 or 4 and treble at 5, regardless of where you have the EQ set as long as the Bass is under halfway, you will get way tighter and more punchy metal tones..... the main thing is not jumpering the channels, to me that just cuts gain and adds mud therefore when you boost it it collapses

Here's a great trick Euronymous used for Mayhem. Run a Distortion into an Overdrive. Much more power to sculpt the tone. Love doing this myself. Also the Boss Metalzone used as a boost ... with little to no distortion on something like a higher gain amp than a Plexi like a Jcm 800 or 900 Also Rat pedal rules. Check out Trevor's tone on Obituary albums> It's totally unreal because I love the tones...Cannibal Corpse's The Bleeding was a Marshall Valvestate IIRC... And Chuck from Death used those as well. To me they sound like shit but those guys really nailed it with that shit gear.

I’m using pretty much all those tools you mentioned. You can give at least one Valvestate video on this channel too!
