I made a chess board for a friend recently and decided to make a second one with the leftovers. Here is how I built a regulation sized end-grain chess board out of black walnut and ash.

This is beautiful...endgrain has depth and your techniques are flawless...like using a glue that allows the wood to expend and contract. I wish I had known that before.

Lovely board, I like the end grain and the 3 D effect of it raised out of the frame. FWIW the pieces were set up across the board, the bottom right hand square is white, H1

Great job. Like how you used the rabbeting bit to recess the board into the frame.

FYI, set up the chess board with a white square in the right corner. You set it up sideways, and yes, it makes a big difference.

I can imagine two people who think they are Gods and are at a stale mate. They are trying to make pieces disappear but little by little the peices all become kings and queens but different. Then you start hearing music. Then you start seeing color. Its getting louder and more vivid. Then the chess board starts making music. The party has just begun. We are gonna make it fun for everyone. I have a vision where we can live in a way that leads to life not death.

I actually just went ahead and bought a couple boards from House of Staunton, clearance for like 50 bucks each...Can't make them for that. but would like to make a nice one some day...unique one...and this End Grain idea might be the way to go

Love the board but disagree with the glass pieces. I think you'd be best to either go with some hardwood pieces or stone on a board that nice.
@alexmh6131
@alexmh6131 3 года назад
Agreed, theirs an exquisite elegance to the glass pieces on the wood board, and I love the board itself although, maybe rounding off those edges on the boarder would have been a nice touch and also, if it was me, I would have put a little more craftsmanship into the legs, just to give it a more raised look. Man I gotta get me a wood router!!!!

Nice job. I would suggest that your frame should have been end grain as well; the two opposing forces (end grain top, face grain frame) are likely to cause issues over time.
@GunflintDesigns
@GunflintDesigns 7 лет назад
That's a good point. To account for that, I have a good 1/8 inch of space all the way around between the two pieces, and then I used a really elastic adhesive to join them together. So any wood movement has a place to go and shouldn't brake the glue.

This looks great! What kind of tung oil did you use? I'm a beginner at finishing wood, and thinking about trying this for my next project and I'd like it to look similar to this. Also, did you start with turning blanks? It's hard to tell in the video how big your squares are, but I'm guessing 2" or 1 3/4" ? Not having any luck finding local suppliers who carry walnut and ash blanks, so maybe you have a recommendation for an online supplier?
@GunflintDesigns
@GunflintDesigns 6 лет назад
I believe I used Homer Formby's tung oil on that one. Each square is 2x2, for an overall playing surface of 16x16. I actually have a small hobby tree farm in my family, so I get all of my lumber straight from the tree. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-smBRsF9NTAI.html I'm afraid I'm not a great source for information on where to get lumber.

will an end-grain board not collapse if the wood expands or or shrinks? or does it depend on the dryness of the wood as well as the wood species? I am going to build a board myself and am deciding if just to follow the grain.
@GunflintDesigns
@GunflintDesigns 6 лет назад
You definitely want the wood to be dry. Technically, this style should be stronger because everything is glued edge grain to edge grain. If you go the other direction, you end up with lots of end grain to end grain joints, which isn't very strong.
@nickster5286

@ApprenticeGM

It's a really nice job and some good workmanship. A couple of areas to improve: 1) I prefer a 45 degree mitre angle for joining the frame, I think that would have looked a bit nicer with better symmetry. 2) I prefer the frame to be the same level as the board, ie don't raise the board up above the frame, so the frame is more a border. Personal preference though. 3) Your pieces are a little large for the board so it looks a touch a cramped. I like the glass vs timber contrast though. 4) As others have said, you always setup a chess board with "white (square) on the right" so your Queen sits on her own colour and king-side castling is short not long. Yes it makes a difference. Thanks for sharing.
