This video tutorial shows how to create a non-traditional bottom opening Sterling Silver and gemstone locket. In this one I used a stunning piece of Red Creek Jasper that looks like an impressionist painting. The materials I used were: 14 gauge sterling round wire, 14 gauge sterling square wire, 26 gauge sterling sheet, 18 gauge sterling sheet, and 3/16 inch fine silver bezel strip in 26 gauge, 2.34 mm outside diameter fine silver tube, hard silver solder, and My-T-Flux. This one includes how to make a hinge. This is likely an advanced project. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful?

Very well done. I never saw a locket made that way. I only have made a domed lentil 2 piece locket with the hinge cut into the 2 pieces. I think I will try and make one like you did with a bezel set stone.

Not sure if you've made any hinges after this one or learned any other methods, but I learned through the course I took that before soldering the tube to the locker you should saw out half of the middle portion. Then you have a bridge to keep the two tubes in line and you can easily cut it off without any clean up on the bessel. 🙂 Lovely piece and way different than any other locker I've seen, thank you for sharing it 😊

Instead of a tripod for holding the flat piece up to get it to temperature i use a piece of 10ga copper wire with a zigzag twist on it to hold the silver up. As long as i dont get any solder on it . there is no issues with it melting or sticking

Ooooh I’ve been wanting to try making a locket but have been too chicken to try. It’s nice to see a demo to instil a little confidence. That jasper is gorgeous btw. I like that closure too. You could pretty easily create a kiss clasp(the one with the friction fit bead that snaps either into a gap or past another bead- it’s often used in purses) from that basic setup. Oh and the adding a bit of square wire to solder the hinge to? Bloody genius!!! Funny you should mention not wearing jewellery, me either. I love making it, love seeing people wear my stuff but wear precisely two pieces. A silver and copper twist bracelet with a tension clasp and an amethyst cab ring that was one of the first things I made…..it’s full of mistakes lol so is a good reminder

This one was similar in difficulty to a regular hinged bail or similar project with the exception of having to be more finicky about precision. It seemed like it took a really long time to me. Thanks for the nice comment Pauline!

Hello Ella! I'm relatively sure I got those from Rio Grande, but I bought them so many years ago that I'm not sure. I've been meaning to get a variety of sizes because these are really useful. The brand is Beadsmith, and the larger side has about an 8mm diameter, the smaller 5mm. Hope this helps. Thanks for the good question!

Good evening! I just didn't understand if we solder the hinge from both sides how it will move? P.S.Where do you buy stones in China? Can you share a link? Thanks for your useful content 😊
@paulinemegson8519
@paulinemegson8519 Год назад
It’s not. The centre knuckle is soldered to one piece and the two outside knuckles to the other piece. You can see the two outside knuckles while he’s working on the clasp/bail.
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing Год назад
The central tube rotates freely on the pin. There are periodic Gem and Jewelry shows in Denver, which is close by. Sometimes dealers from China and other distant places are there to sell. China Mountain Turquoise probably has an online presence if you search, but not sure. Glad you are enjoying the content!
