I was looking for a guide on how to make a menpo mask. I saw the thumbnail and I almost didn't watch this video because I thought that it was too hard for an average crafter like me, but I watched it anyway. I was glad to be proven wrong because I can see doing this mask myself since it's deceptively easy. Thanks man, you're my new favorite foam crafter!

Interesting idea for the nostrils! I've gone through at least 6 fialed iterations trying to cut foam to look bulgy in the right places. Might just go with foam clay balls to simplify the shaping, and burn in some nostrils. Thanks for this!

Well done. A tribute to your craftsmanship. To answer a couple of your questions, the device on the chin (odayori) would have a hole in it (ase-nagashi no ana) so sweat could drain. That piece, along with the hooks (orekugi) you placed on the side for attachment, would be for the cords from the Kabuto (kabuto no o) as the Mempo and No-Dawa were rarely worn without the Kabuto. The cords from the Kabuto would loop through the hooks and tie beneath the chin to secure them for combat. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed watching you construct the mask. Hope to see more.

Your design looks so badass! I’ve tried making my own pattern using my own head (I don’t have a foam head) and I thought it came out okay but it’s nothing compared to yours! I used 10mm foam

The cord actually has a complex way to tie it around the head in 2 spots it goes around the back of the head and then over the top of the head ,but you did do a very nice job of making a Mempo from foam !

This looks great!! By altering a few little details, and change the teeth to be larger and come out of the mouth, you could make an "orcish warmask".

Fun fact, japanese Menpō were mainly used to keep the helmet in place. It's basically fancy comfortable straps for helmets

Tip: To age the rope you could make a cup of tea or coffee and submerge the rope in it. I use this technique to age paper all the time. Hope this helps!

Friendly tip use coffee for ageing textiles paper and similar thing it works wonders also combine it with actual dirt, like after dipping it in black coffee and letting it dry run it trough some dirt it will add extra points of ''age'' on it

It looks really cool, pretty passable for a real one. They were usually made of metal (actually, one of the rare bits that was almost entirely metal rather than rawhide). The noses usually come off as well, including the upper lip and top teeth, which was the more common way that Samurai would wear them into battle if they even wore them at all. The pock-marks that you burned in probably aren't from wear & tear, but an armor texture that the Japanese call 'uzumaki' - which is basically unfinished raw hammer work. They just leave the hammer indents in the metal from shaping, or apply lacquer in such a way as to mimic this rough finish. You did really well with the hooks and lacing, it's a detail that most people get wrong. In fact, even the game gets it wrong; menpo masks don't have strapping built in. The lacing under the chin should actually be the "chin strap" of a helmet. The straps come down from the helmet, around the front of the hook, then pass to the back of the head. This helps to hold the mask tight against your face and hold the mask up. Running the strap behind the head also makes it harder for an enemy to cut the straps. From the back of the head, the laces come forward, over the top of the hook, and then down and under the chin. This helps to hold the helmet very tightly on the head so that it doesn't wobble, and keeps the straps from biting into your skin. This method is better than just going straight down from the helmet and tying under the chin, because it means that your helmet can't be tipped back so that the strap chokes you. The other reason that the menpo doesn't just have straps like a masquerade mask, is because it is also the attachment point for the throat armor (the Nodawa) which hangs from the bottom of the menpo. Tying the helmet cord under the chin hangs this weight from the helmet; cords on the menpo would mean that your ears are taking the strain or else you have to tie it very tightly around your head. The tie at the chin usually used a large, ornamental knot to help keep the nodawa held down so that it wouldn't swing forward and knock around. So really, wearing one of these without a helmet (as the character does) isn't just a bad time, it's pretty much impossible with how they're designed.
