Making A Woodturning Steady Rest

I have made a steady rest for my lathe to help in finishing both ends of the mallets I have been working on. I made a steady rest a few years ago but it was far too big and spindly. It was not very stiff and did not support the workpiece well enough. I wanted to make a much stouter and stiffer steady rest. This newest steady rest is smaller and is just a little bigger than the diameter of the mallets I am working on. It has three rollerblade wheels, each on an adjustable arm. The arms ride in a dado, in the main frame of the steady, which helps hold them in place. The steady mounts to the ways of the lathe. The steady is rigid enough that I can woodturn on the end of the mallet. I made the steady from a piece of plywood I saved from our old kitchen.
I am working on another batch of mallets

Machinist here. All things being perfect a block between the ways, to clock the steady at 90 degrees and center would greatly stiffen and drastically help with wheels leaving a mark. Have it stop just short of the bottom of the ways so you can still clamp tight. if you notice the head of your lathe it has they same key to locate it 90 and center.

Totally agree and while you are working in that area, increase the size of the bolt used to clamp that giant thing to the ways. Your current bolt looks very undersized (1/4 maybe?).
@natthewsmith
@natthewsmith 5 лет назад
Also if you make have the block between the ways only go 1/2 or 3/4 thickness, you can make a similar block on the clamping shoe thing so that it wont twist on you when you are trying to tighten it.

Frank, I have binged watched your videos A LOT, I have only commented once. That was back when you turned something into firewood for April Fool's day. I have been a subscriber pretty much since the beginning of you doing this. Please keep it up. I love all the detail. I have a very tiny shop 9x14, in it I have crammed a radial arm saw and a 1947 ShopSmith (rebuilt from a pile of rust) that I only use as a lathe. And the obligatory drill press, small band saw, grinder, air compressor, contractor table saw, bench top electric planer, an electric wench to move stuff from floor to table top, tiny workbench, mini shop vac and various electric and battery operated hand tools. Plus a couple of hand planes and etc. Everything is on wheels which is the only way I can actually build anything is to move equipment hither and yon. I really admire your gigantic workspace. I really admire your modesty in this RU-vid world of large egos, which why I am a loyal viewer. I will say it again, please keep it up. I am making this steady, more or less, for my ShopSmith with a router, compass and a jig saw. I have a project coming up that requires it. I have looked at a lot and this one fits the bill. How the heck did you know I needed one now?! Merry Christmas to your and your family from mine.

Frank, I love what you do and how you do it. Your original steady-rest could be modified with various sized rings, appropriate for the work and easily cut-out on the CNC, and should help to add needed rigidity. Basically they would be smaller versions of the outer frame that would tie all the arms together as well as to the base. Just a thought.

You can try using a large rubber band as opposed to the tape. Like the ones that come on new doors sometimes at the hinges. They are about 1 1/2” wide and will wrap around a 2” to 3” work piece.
@laurinos8774
@laurinos8774 5 лет назад
What a nice project. It is really lovely to see you go through the design process. At the end I was thinking if a wide, large rubber band might work better than a piece of tape. It would be quicker to apply and you don't risk cutting the mallett with your knife. If the rubber band is even enough it should run smooth as well. Maybe even an offcut from large diameter surgical tubing could work well.

Anyone needing a super steady rest should google the “ok spin doctor steady rest” I got the deluxe version with 12 arm positions. Have used it to turn 20” drums with 5 or 6 wheels to steady basically a 3 foot long log that I could then hollow to a 1/2” thickness. Fantastic for large and small projects. You need the stiffness of big steel sections to minimize vibration. The spin doctor is very helpful over the phone. For small diameter items like a long tool handle or broom stick the tool test made by Oneway is a very economical solution.

Then when you see some of the behind the scenes work that also goes on, to add to the perfection, Which is also part of the finish process. the price is more than justified. Thank you Frank. As others have stated, I think the wheel marks are exacerbated by the wheel axles being not entirely parallel to the rotation of the spindle, causing them to drag back and forth slightly as the piece rotates in a slightly different direction. I don't think it's entirely because of this and you'll probably need to continue using tape on raw wood, but if you were turning something harder like a urethane coated surface or small rocks, being perfectly aligned may fix it. And I too think that an alignment tooth made of some durable hardwood or rigid plastic would make it easy to maintain alignment without needing to fix it by hand. But I needed to write a comment cuz supposedly that helps. So there. Also getting brand new wheels that are perfectly clean and I think the hardest you can find, would also reduce this. Maybe buy a set in super hard and super soft for comparison if you run out of tape. Question though. Is there a mechanical reason to have the slots offset from crossing the center, or was it just to fit the slot past the wheel mounting?

(other wise the goblet is unbalanced from the start) I turn mallets and often from offcuts, but either use the tail stock or work on the handle fist and use a parting tool at the end but never use a steady rest.... I'll give it a go... but tail stock does it all really or am I missing something...??!!??

@@klschofield71 Rubber bands are very rarely consistent in thickness, the typical way they're made often results specifically in a ridge somewhere along the length and with one side being considerably thicker than the other. You'd have to find a supplier that almost certainly just by chance has a process that's good at making consistent thickness rubberbands. Otherwise the bands would serve as an offset cam vibrating the piece within the wheels like the buzzer in your phone. Tape and rubbergloves are so thin that variations in their thickness won't add up to much of an offset.
