I love this, I created a tavern called the Mummers Dragon and its a widely renowned tavern known for legends making a name there. I turned one of my favorite PC into a NPC who is a prominent figure there. He lost his right arm below the elbow to an axe and got it replaced by a fully functional Mithril arm. He also has a tamed Mimic Scabbard that can store multiple weapons.

the first thing my characters hear when they get to a town is "how do you find lodging for the night?" it gives thieves cant a use as they can stay at cheap lodgings safely with the thieves that have a chance of getting raided by the guards, they can stay at a noble acquaintances estate if they have the noble background but will be pulled into noble politics for the course of their stay, or they can find an inn flavored around the city's specialty. wizarding school towns have a bar full of students stressing about finals and memorizing/muttering spells to themselves, mining towns have a bar where the miners hang out to complain about working conditions and plan strikes. just little flavored hints to what may be the next part of the story you want to tell. because nothing sends players of on an adventure like watching the drunk in the corner keel over and die from fatigue while they are trying to rest.

A pub full of stressed wizards cramming for their final is my new favourite thing.

I’m blown away that you only have 1.5k subscribers. Listening to this while cleaning got me wanting to run a game again for my friends even if life is crazy and it won’t be often it just reminded me the magic of ttrpgs.

You get a sub from me. I am generally a creative individual who only watches tip videos as a reference. But your video actually helped me overcome a design flaw and was well organized. Thank you.

@@assassin_npc I was designing a town for a campaign that grew out of a fort. Because it was a fort, it's main inhabitants are guards and local traders who enter it as a safe outpost along the way, but there are some out laying farms outside the walls too. Some of my NPCs have conflicting interests. The local Lord doesn't pay as much attention to the fort as he should and it's led to some politics over who should actually control the town. I have a few points of interest in the town for players to stumble across but early on realized the division in town made it too disjointed. I needed a way to tie the conflicting individuals together. Your tavern video made me realize it could solve my issue by being a meeting spot for several different individuals through our the day, giving my players a good spot to learn about the town.

How do you pull 6k views with under 2k subs?? This is an outrage! Burn down RU-vid (is that even possible?)! Accidental interrobang!? Keep up the fantastic work, love the voice, pacing and the excellent choice of images and, yes of course, your excellent humour. Make RU-vid remember this day!

I thought I already had a tavern in mind, it's the one I spontaneously thought of the first time and the one I automatically imagine each time, until modifications are needed. Well, "the first time": it's probably not the same anymore. It has certainly slowly changed over the years, its various uses have improved it, so much that the need for modifications eventually became less and less frequent. It's a tavern. Just the tavern. That one tavern. My tavern. My only obvious tavern. It has only ever be shown in my mind, but I was so comfortable in that tavern that it never crossed my mind that it wasn't "enough" for a campaign. If I was to DM a campaign this morning, I would have invited my players in my tavern, only to find it more basic than expected. This video made me write down 12 points: my tavern only had 5 of them, the other 7 were still empty. And it was incredibly easy to fill the blanks. Thanks. Even in just my head it's already more alive now.

So I had a place that i used for my homebrew game that was started in 2nd Ed to 3.5, it was a resturant and high end inn, called the Prancing unicron. high end food, a massive wine list and a healthy spirt list. A player tried to rent a room as thier residence, and they couldn't keep up with the monthly rent, 1000 gp a month/level, andif you missed a payment, they claim the property.

The Orc’s Tusk is my take on a DnD style Waffle House. The Orc’s Tusk started as a small tavern in a popular fishing village. It was started by a group of Orc adventurers who retired but still desired to fight. The draw of the Orc’s Tusk popularity is that you can fight one of the Orc staff to pay for your food (If you win, your food’s free. If you lose, you get 50% off for testing their strength). On weekends, when the Tavern is closed at night, the Orcs host a small fighting tournament (Winner gets 1 month of free food and 5 gold).

The first three or four bits could potentially be tied to dice rolls? Toss three dice and know the size, emotion etc of your tavern and come up with the rest as you go?
@assassin_npc
@assassin_npc 6 месяцев назад
That's true! in fact... every part could technically be tied to a dice roll ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah. What's worse, the spell was cast after it was uploaded, not before. Sadly, I've yet to find RU-vid tutorials on how to avoid getting booming bladed post upload. Cuz it sounded fine on Premiere Pro.

@@assassin_npc I'm just saying, Montreux Unillon's House of Ferments is all well and good, but having a formula like that in your toolkit lets you whip out a Screaming Goat Inn or The Slapping Squid dockside tavern (better duck, roll dex) at a moment's notice.

The Actor's Haunt in the theater district equidistant from the three most popular theaters. It's three levels , a former church higher than it is wide. Seats maybe 20 people per level? An actor has been engaged to sit in a pulpit over the entrance and he greats each new customer with a quotation, hopefully apt. A favourite is " You few you happy few you band of brothers and sisters, for those of you who enter now shall be like my brother be ye ne'er so base. Entering this day shall ennoble your condition, and many's the noble asleep now will count their honour cheap and their lives accursed because they are not with you here. Welcome to the Haunt, the bar awaits you" The prices are ridiculous. They do look down their noses at those who complain about it. The fanciest liquor in town is available here. Autographed pictures of actors dot the walls and if one of the PC's is an actor, free drinks for a signed portrait are possible. The rumours here are almost always useless as they deal with the intricacies of the acting profession and which plays /entertainments in town are worth seeing and which actor is horrible to the stage hands or a hopeless mumbling drunk. Which rich merchant is pursuing which leading lady/man? Though there is one gang of thieves in town ,the Merry Japesters, who seem to have a professional providing them with make up. Maybe someone here knows something?

Pretty cool but this is why no one wants to DM. This is WAAAY too much homework. And just because you spend a lot of time on something is no guarantee that the players will ever see it or engage with it. Think of (or generate) a few cool names and jot down some 1-2 sentence ideas and then use that for inspiration. Then if the players *DO* end up spending a decent amount of time in one of your taverns stuff like this can be used for a deep dive to really bring it to life.

Yes, and no prep goes to waste :) If you didn't use it in this session, you can always use it in a future one. And if you don't use it in this campaign, you can always use it in a future one.
