So happy with the wings- less happy with the rest of the cosplay but it's not bad! Kind of want to make another pair of giant wings already, what do you think, shall I try for 5 metre wingspan next time?? Husk has been on my to-cosplay list for a while...

Cosplayers are just so surreal to me. Imagine, a human who has an interest and proceeds to paint their face, glue, sew, cut, and buy materials, and become the character. Man. That'd be so cool for a dnd session.
@MissTwisteddd
@MissTwisteddd 3 месяца назад
I gotta say as a cosplayer and dnd person, I'm not sure I could combine them cos I'm terrible at being 'casual' with my costumes, so they're always so bulky and full on that they're not very practical to sit and play dnd in!

Going into Bunnings (the big aussie hardware store) is always hilarious cos they see me buying pipes, planks of wood, door hinges etc. and always ask what I'm building and I always have the funniest answers "a giant pair of wings" "faun legs!" "Would you believe a comically oversized sword?"

I use that white foam all the time at my job. good stuff. an entire 4 foot diameter roll weighs like 15 pounds. Also do not heat it up. It has basically no thermal mass and just melts. Overall outstanding work, and super ingenious use of material.

I had a feeling that was the case, but didn't want to test it out haha! It's amazing stuff! I wish I'd bought thicker stuff as the 1mm thickness is so see-through. I've got some 3mm foam for next time and can still use up the 1mm stuff for the smaller feathers!

Ooooh! I have an old backpack from high school, and several old fishing rods in the garage. Plus a couple rolls of that packing foam. Now I *finally* have an easy way to make the wings for my winter fae!!!! I'll just have to figure out a way to hide/incorporate the straps into the outfit. Hmm...
@MissTwisteddd
@MissTwisteddd 3 месяца назад
Yesss that's going to be amazing! For me I ended up covering them in the same fake scale-mail. But you could do detachable sleeves or even just some fancy shoulder decoration stuff! (I find decorating something easier than fully disguising it)
@beckymurphy4714
@beckymurphy4714 3 месяца назад
@@MissTwisteddd So I've been doing more thinking on this. I have some thicker packing foam that I'm going to cut into somewhat jagged, triangular shapes to use as the primaries, with the hope of them ending up looking somewhat like icicles. Then the thinner foam will be the secondaries, with actual feathers for the coverts. Along the top edge I'm going to run ice-crystal fairy lights, and iridescent garland to look like ice and frost. I bought a couple cathedral-length bridal veils on clearance at a hobby store - I'll use them for the base layer of the wings. I'll also use more of the garland wrapped around the straps to disguise them. I have black plastic tubes from garden stake lights that I can use instead of the PVC.

@zacklothamer9533

So as far as cutting those fishing rods go most of them are actually made from graphite and not fiberglass the best way to cut them is a reinforced cutting wheel in your Dremel at the highest safe RPM you can reach with it with it mounted to a surface then hold the rod on either side of where you want to cut it and slowly turn it against the spinning cut off wheel so that it cuts through it slowly instead of trying to cut it all at once that should prevent it from splittering and cracking down the length of the rod section
@MissTwisteddd

having worked with some of the light white foam. If you want to give it more substance, a solid base, or more feather like, You can use a thin line of hot glue to do the trick. you can do a little (maybe a 1/4th) on the centerline (from your fold and pull) of the feather that is under another layer to give the feathers more...backbone? don't have a good word for it. Otherwise, you can do a thin line down the middle for the rachis/shaft if you are doing more realistic feathers. Shouldn't weigh it down too much and you can go thinner or thicker as needed. Experiment as needed and find what suits your cosplay the most! never underestimate the power of hot glue and cardboard! :)
@MissTwisteddd

thank you heaps! It's a new material for me and it's got so much potential. I also just discovered it comes in different thicknesses so that'll help with durability and the problem of it being so translucent. I'm going to try the 3mm stuff instead of the 1mm stuff!

Some tips if you do this again. Instead of chipboard, use a cutting board as your typical white cutting board is the same material they use as stiffeners in hiking backpacks (HDPE plastic sheet). Adding a spine off of it that goes down your back makes it pull out from your shoulders less and attaching it to a bra helps offset the weight. ABS is better than PVC in my opinion as it is both stiffer and lighter if more difficult to find. I don't like floppy feathers so I would go with foam board as the stiffness-to-weight ratio is very high and the ability to texture and shape can't be beat. Also adding a little cheap polyester batting between the layers can give dimension and hide structural elements.
@MissTwisteddd
@MissTwisteddd 3 месяца назад
Hmm the spine idea is interesting and definitely agree it would help it lift and move off the shoulders less! The chipboard is so light and strong enough as is, so I'm wondering what benefit the plastic cutting board would have over the chipboard? Though perhaps the cutting board being a little bit heavier might be good to stabilize it- the extra weight doesn't matter as much right at the centre. The bra idea is definitely interesting, in heavier wings I've made before I've attached a heavy-duty strap that sits just under my bust that I think would serve the same purpose- so can definitely agree with that as an idea! Personally I love the floppy feathers, it keeps it light, foam board I think would be too stiff and not 'flow' and float as these do! But I think that might just come down to personal taste. Foam board would be fantastic if you were doing wngs that articulate and fan in and out rather than stay outwards but float around. I think the polyester batting would also have the issue of adding additional weight and bulk, but I think if the flowing, floating aspect of your wings were less a priority and the shape and dimension was a higher priority, it woud work beautifully!
@sirstroam

@MissTwisteddd I want to start by saying your works are AMAZING. I am in love with these wings in particular. I was wondering if you'd thought about a more subtle back piece (the backpack part)? I was going to try and make a pair of my own for a maleficent cosplay and was struggling to come up with another solution.

i saw few people make feathers from polyfoam underlay (the foam you put under wooden panels floors) and it looks so light and thin, but not as thin as the white poly foam you had (it have few different thickness)

Glad you used plastidip instead of actual spray paint cause they do crack a lot if spray on the white packing foam the result is absolutely amazing!

This Video was sent into a DC group I am in and honestly: YOU´RE A LIFESAVER!! I planned to cosplay Angel from Chainsaw Man but I couldn't find some good wings or tutorial (that could keep my focus whoopie) and this is literally gold. I love your editing style and the way you explain things and are showing your "fails" and attempts. Literally thank you so so much! Also dont mind me noting down the materials: Fishing Rods PVC Pipe Door Hinge Backbag Isolon Foam Light wood thingy Polycell Packing Foam Bolts

Haha heck yeah there's so many winged superheroes this would work amazingly for too! Hope your Angel turns out well! (I've only seen like two episodes of Chainsaw man and really loved it!). I think that list sounds pretty good! Plastidip and a good contact adhesive (and a good respirator for using with both of these) will be good too for construction. In the video I complained about me 'wasting' plastidip on the wings instead of regular spray paint but actually I've found that regular spraypaint flakes off so easily that plastidip is actually a really good choice for either painting or priming.

Used to be, when I would go camping with the fam, there was this simplified single person tent we had with these odd Poles. Three of them. Super Long ones, that were slightly inflexible but tremendously large and strong for its weight. Cool thing about it was the way the pole was constructed. It had a thin white rope running down its center and you could collapse it into half its full length, or a third of it etc with folds. I wonder if such a material might be useful in a costume. Hope that helps you find the materials needed someday for your beautiful hobby XD

I am far from a gamer and have no idea who any of these characters are, But i love the skill and the artistic flair that bring these creations to life. I did wonder how whipper snipper cord would work for feather stalks it's light flexible and comes in different thicknesses. As for cutting the fiberglass fishing rods, a hacksaw or cutoff wheel in the dremel would work fine (don't breath the dust) then some hot glue or electrical tape over the cut end to prevent splinters. I found you're channel from the owlchemist shorts , very cool you play the character well. From a fellow victorian Thanks for posting and keep up the great work.

Well thank you very much! Great idea on the fiberglass cutting too. I think the wiper snipper chord would work perfectly! Great if you're going for more detailed feathers

For the makeup, I would add black lipstick. like, her lips are black becuse it's a cartoon, not because she actually uses black lipstick, but I feel like it would look a little more similar to her design. And maybe I'd exagerate the eye makeup more, because she has HUGE eyes. But overall, I LOVE the cosplay! The wings are BEAUTIFUL

Holy crap, this looks fun and absolutely gorgeous! And the fact that you could’ve cut this video in like a dozen small one’s just to keep the retention, but decided to make it one cohesive video is just… Just thank you!
@MissTwisteddd

I will admit the one downside to constantly squeezing big complex projects into a single video is that I end up glossing over details or rushing the finished cosplay. So I want to find a happy medium in future- one video is either going to be one detailed concept (like wings, or legs, or a corset) OR one video can be a whole cosplay if it's a simple one!
