A Wooden Gear Clock designed by Clayton Boyer.
Goof alert. This clock is a work in progress, I found out that I needed to remake my pallets to get the the Number 6 to work better. If you have to keep adding weight and you have run out of pendulum adjustment it means something is not right, you need to either take the clock apart and clean and polish all surfaces, or replace the pallets and escape wheel like I did. you can see my healthier ticking clock on my other video 'tips to get your clock working,' to see what I mean. I also Cut out the spaces inbetween the clock hands to make it lighter. they kept falling down and it seemed to be half past six a lot.

If you need additional information go to Clayton Boyer website and check out his information links, or watch Adrian Iredale's videos too. I made this clock out of Black Walnut.

This is an absolutely wonderful and instructive video. You cover so many of the detail parts, and present the solutions in a humorous and informative way. Thanks for this fantastic set of instructional videos on building the Number Six clock.

I'm a bit late to the commenting party, but it was my desire to build a wooden clock that got me started in woodworking in the first place. I've lost all patience for making an actual clock, but have gone on to making plenty of nice things with wood and now have a full shop.

Thanks for the reply. I initially came across parts 1 & 4, so I took the title and did a search on "Making the #6 part", expecting it to supply 1, 2, 3, 4. It didn't - the search just found parts 1 & 4. But then, while browsing RU-vid on related topics, parts 2 and 3 came up. I don't know what the difference was, and I couldn't see why they had not been included in the search results. Perseverence wins again! It's beautiful work, and a very pretty clock.

I want to thank you for sharing your videos. I just bought two plans and can't wait to get started. I build custom made wooden surfboards. Making a clock will be interesting. My goal will be eventually to design my own clock or maybe just a moving artwork.

@mmschweizer I hope this gets to you, Cool wooden surfboards. There is nothing like having a clock work for you, it's amazing you just keep checking it to see if it still going, there is nothing like that feeling. though you do need a tonne of patience though.

The Number 6 is very accurate, I'm not sure if it loses or gains a few seconds a day it's usually spot on when I come down in the morning to see it ticking on the wall.

Is it possible to make a small clock to sit on a fireplace without having all the weights etc?

It's a real shame that parts 2 and 3 have disappeared from RU-vid! I would have enjoyed watching the project, head to toe, without the chest and belly missing! Any chance you could put them back on again?

Good job. Great technique. You should try model ship building (wooden), I'm sure you'd be as good as some of those other more famous people.

For the Gears and the pinions I used Baltic birch plywood, as it is pretty stable and the frame I used the hardwood black walnut.

The only thing I can think of is that I made sure that the holes were lined up in the center using a ruler or straight edge, as the plan for the frame is on two pages it's a little thing but if you want a straight frame. I think I forgot to mention that on the video.

What happened is that the sound track that I used RU-vid didn't like so in some countries a couple of the videos are blocked. I didn't know at the time and I think that the videos are lost. Not sure what to do about it. I might have to try and fix it sorry about that
@jointheclubsmellypan
@jointheclubsmellypan 12 лет назад
@scrolltime2 what is happening is energy is being used up be the motion of the pallets wacking the top of the teeth. So you end up adding more weight which isn't the solution. Try making another pallet, or reducing the thickness slightly of the pallets so the pallets enter the teeth better if you see my video "Some tips to help your wooden gear clock keep ticking." at the end of the video you see what its supposed to do. I hope it helps.

I enjoyed your series of making this clock,thanks . 1 point I noticed is that the design is a dead beat escapement design and so there must not be any recoil after the escapewheel tooth has fallen onto the pallet. ie ,it should not recoil the escapewheel backwards, it just needs depthing deeper ,so the tooth falls on the dead concentric face ,not the impulse face! ! Keep up the good work.
@robbie77300
@robbie77300 9 лет назад
He knew about that after making the video. He fixed it by replacing the pallet I think.

robbie77300 Yup I did, I looked at Claytons clock again and mine and went oh great, I was so excited I finished the Clock and uploaded the video. Then Oh man I Fluffed it, so I fixed the pallet afterwards. It was an easy fix.

Yes its easy enough to be marginally short on them pallet teeth. Great videos you did of the build.

robbie77300 Thanks it was fun to do and kept me busy at the time. I haven't built a clock in ages. I would love to have a cnc machine. but that wouldn't stop me spending the time sanding. Clayton clocks are cool. Thanks again.

Ukuloonie Yes the number 6 is a nice design. I drew up my own version of it and put it in the living room. There are about 5 different clocks in the house at present.
