For the average person I think the small 18v is the way to go. It's a little slower but it is small and light and easy to throw in a trunk or a back seat. Being 18v it has enough juice to inflate a full set of 4 tires vs the 12 that would struggle. It is just too bad none of these have a trigger lock. Shame on you Makita.

I'm sure it's a legal issue. They've heard us complain for years. Even with a new generation with a mechanism they can easily implement is something they wouldn't overlook.

My large 18v frequently over inflates past the target pressure with no sign of stopping. A trigger lock is unfortunately a liability issue for Makita. Of course the sensible of us wouldn't rely only on the auto shut off.. a cable tie does the trick.

Why do you prefer the small 18v over the 12v? I haven't yet seen the reviews for those smaller tools but will look for them now. I just need something to top off my car tires.

I have the Milwaukee and I absolutely LOVE the screw-on fitting. One of the best features of the tool in my opinion. Those clamp-on fittings never seem to seal properly and they can be a pain to get the valve pin pushed in properly. I have absolutely consistent performance with the screw-on fitting on the Milwaukee. I may even get the larger 18V Makita now that I know it has the same fitting, that's how much I love it.

I have the older 18 Volt model and it’s a solid machine, as for the lack of a trigger lock I use a Velcro strap and it works flawlessly. In my opinion Makita really needs to bring out an Inflator/Jump Starter Combination. I doubt that the CXT Platform would be powerful enough but the LXT X2 would probably work just fine.

As you can get the clamp on attachment as a separate aftermarket part (screws in), I prefer the screw on for versatility.

If I had to guess the reason for household use only, it's generally recommended to not leave batteries in vehicles. They're probably trying to avoid giving replacement batteries for swelling caused by extreme temperature fluctuations? Just shootin in the dark here but seems reasonable.

I use my 40v inflator to air test domestic pipe installations (does that count as household use only?😆). 5 bar for half an hour, typically takes close to 10mins to reach that pressure as there is a lot of volume. I managed to break the brass hose tip pin depressor in mine, presumably because it spends a lot of time under load on a Schrader valve, after a repair under warranty I've got an extension hose which doesn't engage the pin and has the quick release lever instead

Maybe there is a way to make a Makita semi compact framer with these. Make up a back back with a small air tank and the 40v inflator used to fill the tank to 90-100 psi. Then a short hose to an pneumatic framing nailer! It could work 😁

@kizzjd9578
@kizzjd9578 2 года назад
Doubt it, It’s due to the duty cycle for not having a trigger lock. Most people have no idea about duty cycles so I suppose they were smart and decided to make people only use it when the trigger is on.
@Jtwizzle
@Jtwizzle 2 года назад
@@kizzjd9578 I doubt that is the main reason for no trigger lock. Most small compressors with a on/off toggle switch have a duty cycle, a lot simply do not even list it. It is likely for some possible safety reason or a combination of factors. It makes even less sense when they could have a trigger lock but have it auto stop at the set pressure like some other brand do.
@kizzjd9578
@kizzjd9578 2 года назад
@@Jtwizzle fair enough, I wasn’t aware of other brands having a trigger lock. I do know that with my ARB high output 4wd compressor, its just got a on/off switch as it has a 100% duty cycle.

@@kizzjd9578 Yeah, I have a viair compressor and it has a toggle switch and 25 minutes @ 30psi duty cycle. It can fill all 4 truck tires in under 10 minutes(from 18 to 32) so thats not a problem, though. All depends I guess.

DMP181Z I am absolutely baffled by the design of this tyre inflator. 1. You set the target limit, but then have to bend down to hold in the trigger to make the pump work. I bought it to save my back and it doesn’t do that. 2. Why is there no auto shut off? What is the point setting the target pressure? The pump will also continue pumping if you hold the button in past the target pressure. 3. There is a bracket for a valve I’ll never use hanging on the end of the inflator tube which makes it very awkward to attach. Why isn’t it stored elsewhere? 4. The tube has a straight valve connector that loses pressure as you unscrew it and is also nigh on impossible to get it on to a motorcycle front wheel valve. Valve needs to be right angled and quick release.

"Household use only" is all about the accuracy of pressure not about the sturdiness of the tools. In commercial or industrial applications one often needs quite accurate pressure sources and accurate pressure readout. Thus there are calibrated manometers. Makita inflators does not provide with either industrial-grade pressure readout or industrial/production grade pressure parameters.

I noticed my dmp180 started lying with the measurement. Usually it shows 2 psi lees than the actual pressure. Needs to run it for 3 seconds, and suddenly it will show the correct value. Same issues with inflating. It inflates 2 psi more. Probably because the rubber piece moved a bit.
