I replace the brushes and still have lots of sparks where the brushes meet with the other part

Either the armature or field is bad then.

the bottom of the gray (sorry kind of a noob) part of the armature was darkened it looks to me like someone just leaned real hard into that grinder

That's what they look like after use. Its carbon deposits on the copper commutator bars.
