I think that as far as the compassion is concerned, yes, Erikson writes compassion into the characters, but his true magic is evoking compassion in the reader…..

Loved this chat. Canavan is a joy to listen to. That said, Mike, here's one re-re-reader who still hates Kallor with a fury. And calling him the Stalin of Malazan is not wrong. Also totally agree that Feist and Gemmell hold up well.

I think most people hate him. Sort of. I think people see an archetype in him they see in themselves. The folly of ambition. A bottomless hole. And so you say ok. That’s what he is. A elemental of that. And instead of being surprised or angry, you watch him. And it becomes something akin to watching fire burn. No matter that you know what it will do, you can learn to admire aspects of it, while seeing the absolute horror and devastation it wreaks. Or that’s what I see.

I liked MOI but I really agree with the statement that it didn't reach the same emotional level as DHG, the words "Coltaine leads a chain of dogs" gives me shivers everytime.

Fantastic discussion! I've had that same experience of attachment to characters sneaking up on me. There are some truly dark and imaginative things in Memories of Ice as well as some profoundly moving moments. All that said, I had my struggles through it as well. "Gardening of the Moon" -haha! Now I'm very curious about Magician. I hope you enjoy House of Chains, Mike!

1:47:00 Gemmel was my entire young teen years! Get on it! - I've just finished Memories of Ice (2nd reading) so was looking for a video by people who might be a little more astute than me to share their thoughts - great video from the both of you! (Due to a technical error I read Malazan wildly out of order the 1st time so I just assumed that I was one of those people who found it intimidating and difficult to follow, I still am, but reading it in order is a massive improvement!)

I’m only catching up with a lot of these talks now, so this comment probably won’t even get noticed, but never mind. The bit in the discussion about Whiskeyjack made me want to throw my tuppence in. As AP say, Whiskeyjack formerly held high position in this all conquering empire. When we meet him he is a sergeant. He’s been demoted, and not just knocked down a grade. So what did he do? Something so serious for Laseen to punish him in this way but not so serious that she didn’t boot him out altogether or remove him more permanently. We know by this point that death is not necessarily a final solution in this world. This made me think that there was something about Whiskeyjack that Laseen knew that made her feel it was safer - or necessary - to retain Whiskeyjack. And then there’s the question of why Whiskeyjack would accept the demotion and continue to strive within the Malayan armed forces. Anyway, loved the chat, even if I’m a year late to it.

Mike, I’ve been watching your reviews since I fell down the Malaztube rabbit hole and find myself constantly nodding my head with the things you say. And then I find myself saying “oh jeez, good point A.P.” right along with you. Mike, you’re the guy I just want to sit down and chat about the books with. A.P. Is the guy I want to get into a debate with...and lose badly. And just a side note, Mike your patience with people constantly telling you you’ll love certain characters or aspects of books is astounding. Just hearing about it or seeing it on the discord drives me crazy. To me just saying that is in itself is a spoiler. You’re a very chill dude. Kudos! Keep up the great content.

I very much enjoyed watching this discussion. I could listen to you two ramble on for hours--seriously. I'm pretty much close to where Dr Fantasy and Prof Fireballs are up to with their re-read. I finished Midnight Tides just before their dissection of same. I'm about to get into The Bone Hunters. (I loved Midnight Tides. Some new favourite characters in that volume.)

Loved the last bit. The number of books tucked away in A'Ps brain is astounding. Perhaps a neural shunt is hidden beneath the queue. But yes, Gemmell and Cook are must reads. People are soncsught up in the hot new thing that they skip over all the books that influences them. Erickson was nice enough to dedicate books to them.

Woot yes! Another wonderful discussion filled with great jokes and insights. 🤘🤓 Would certainly tune in for more talks between you - about Malazan, superheroes or anything else . Just as a quick aside on Feist - he's one of my favourite authors. I started reading him early on, so there's nostalgia for sure, but I do think he holds up. I agree with AP that the Daughter of the Empire series is a highlight. What's really interesting to me though is how you'd like him after reading Wheel of Time - because Feist is one of several reasons I disliked WoT. Several characters from WoT felt very similar to Feist's, but I connected with them a lot more in Feist. Curious to see how that pans out.

It is good to see the light bulb go off while reading when something makes a lot more sense from two books ago. Or when the last chapter in MoI takes you right back to the Fall. But I think this book is such a favorite is how much the Itmovian storyline affected you. Take him out or move it somewhere else and it would be a completely different book. For not much of a page count he had some of the best quotes.

Great intro, I need to find that paper. Reminded me of the Expanse series originally being a tabletop game, where the main factions were Earth, Mars, and OPA. So instead of rpgs evolving character writing like dnd in malazan, the worldbuilding was uniquely fleshed out in the expanse.

I'm feeling like a broken robot already but great discussion as always. As for the death point and I did say it on the discord to someone even in our own life we always experience death as the spectators and the sadness we feel is usually for the ppl around and to their reaction to the death and less for the actual dead person (as always there's exceptions), so since we are getting this scene from a spectator PoV and not WJ himself it's only natural. As for aging of series I will use your words and say you should not count on other ppls idea of a series and sometimes you should just give it a chance yourself knowing that somethings may have different interactions with the modern reader. And yes I would love to hear you both on the super heroes in the movies and maybe also in comix

Actually I do disagree that others did not see the problem with Itkovian releasing the Imass. I think there were already 800 Kell Hunters opposite them and they turned around. Just nobody had control of what happend. Silverfox lost control of the T'lan Imass and nobody had control over Itkovian.

Great chat! @A Critical Dragon Doc AP, you are correct: In the story of Thor & Loke traveling to Utgard-Loke, Utgard-Loke tricks Thor to attempt to lift The Midgard Serpent disguised as a Cat, empty the Oceans through a drinking horn & avoids Thor's hammer-hitting by putting hidden mountains inbetween. My personal favourite is the last challenge, when the mighty Thor fails to wrestle an old lady, who turns out to be "Old Age" personified, whom not even Thor can defeat in the end. I watched the whole video and have never read any Malazan, just because your guys’ chemistry and insights were interesting/fun to watch. I’m thinking of starting the series now. I have some audible credits but because how expansive / confusing to a newcomer this series seems to be would you all suggest I read it to focus and be able to flip back n reread sections I don’t get, or is audiobook listening still ok to take in everything on a first read ?
