You did nail it with the whole “no more monsters, no more slashers, no more aliens, no more actual characters for Horror movies” it really did feel like we went through an entire decade of nothing but paranormal ghost movies to the point where it was just, “is this all we have now?”

Tbh Hereditary was technically unique, and imo a movie doesn't need to be original. In this day and age it's very hard to do so, so it's a great challenge to make something unique out of existing ideas. On my top 3 horror movies Hereditary is number 2 so it's powerful.

Something....new? I can give you a couple of close reference for each scene or detail, but I'm sure it has already been done. The movie was somewhat entertaining but saying it was new shows a serious knowledge of "classics" (which doesn't require taste for old or pedantic stuff). Please go dig IMDB cross referencing of similar movies going back in time and have a blast looking for stuff and watching them. I mean...just watch this video.

Anyone who is familiar with Italian horror, shock cinema or James Wan as a filmmaker should know full well that he had his tongue tucked firmly in his cheek throughout the making of this film. I went in expecting exactly what this movie gave, and I loved every single outrageous minute.

I think you forget, Cordery, that the classic horror movies that we all love were rejected by the major public when they first released. So complaining that the mainstream horror movies suck and people are rejecting the good ones, is not exactly valid when er... yeah. That's what happened to most of the original horror movies too. So there's no real point declaring it the death of horror when this is pretty much status quo for the genre where it matters. Time is the best critic 🤷‍

I had a blast, especially towards the end. Even though I kinda knew what the twist was, at the same I'm like Nah, there's no way it's going in that direction....oh....hahaha. All right, let's have some fun. So I guess James Wan was busy watching some Frank Henenlotter films. It reminds you of the Dark Half as well. Yeah, the characters weren't the greatest, I guess Leigh Whannell should have worked on the script instead. Still, it was nice to see James Wan going towards the Raimi horror style and taking risks. And I get it, it's not for everyone especially if you're looking for another Conjuring type film. And some people hate the Evil Dead films as well, I have shown them to some horror fans who love conjuring and paranormal activity films....they thought the Evil Dead trilogy was garbage. I guess, they never heard of horror comedies, oh well.
@cordzfx

One Halloween I printed out a bunch of tiny Babdooks and put them in various windows as decorations and created a Babadook mask that I put on a dummy next to the door. After trick or treating with my kids, while they were going through their haul, I quietly left the room put on the mask and hoodie that was on the dummy, crept back, and then jumped into the room with a loud "arrr!" They jumped up screaming, ran to the bathroom and locked themselves in.

Original? This was an X-Files episode. A woman has visions of a killer committing murders. Hang on, let me google. ...My mistake, it's actually TWO X-Files episodes. "Aubrey" and "Mind's Eye." In which a woman has visions where she sees a killer committing murders from his point of view. So it wasn't even original the second time X-Files did it.

I loved Malignant start to finish! I've watched it twice now and I'll watch it again, happily! When I watched it the 2nd time with my roommates, they mentioned the acting, and said they didn't like how Sexy Asian Cop played everything with such a straight face. I thought it was such a weird take, and pointed out that he spends most of the movie looking EXTREMELY CONCERNED. Also, speaking purely as someone from Seattle, it was really nice to see some of my hometown represented as the "sunny and colorful suburban edge of town that mashes seamlessly with a shiny, high-tech downtown" it really is, instead of "everything is depressing and blue-stained with wet air" that some people mistake it for. The Underground Tour is a real place/thing to do in Pike Place Market and it's a fun and informative time sink. ALSO also! Washington state really DOES have a gothic castle hospital, it's called Pacific Medical in Beacon Hill. I can actually physically confirm that it is terrifying to see it rising out of the mountain from down in your car on the freeway. It's HUGE! And it looks haunted as fuck! I'm gonna go to Rotten Tomatoes and give this movie full marks!

Movies like Annihilation, The Thing, The void are great examples of this ( even though no movie managed to use both halves of that type of horror to the fullest and hit the ending with a nice little bow. ) The only piece of media that did this was Bloodborne tbh that's a huge feat. Honestly tho, I do think we're actually seeing the beginning of a better era of horror. They may not be mind bendingly original, but movies like Hereditary, Midsommar, The Night House and The Lodge are actually being appreciated and we're at least starting to see the generic copy and paste pg-13 haunted house movies fade out to give way to some genuinely well made and effective horror movies. The jump scare ones are always gonna be around now, but I think general audiences have gotten tired of those as well and though they may not have been ready for malignant, I think we're getting there slowly but surely.

I dunno man. There is great horror being made but just like the old days, you gotta dig. Personally I'd rather watch the straight to streaming stuff that can take more risks. (2020) Bloody Hell had me rolling and grossed out in equal measure. (2015) Hell House LLC was pretty creepy for a found footage. For the big screen, I'd recommend the reimagined (2018) Suspiria . I have a place in my heart for Argento's version, but it's more for it being a visually stunning piece. The later one had a far more interesting story and the gore was amazing.

I like the violence, look, and goofy tone of the movie and it’s more unique than most movies that released this year, but in terms of an actual plot and characters, it’s kinda bad. Now I love campy horror films. Films like Braindead and Slither are some of my all-time favorite, but I feel like those movies have a more interesting cast and bizarre stories. This movie definitely gets crazy, but only around the beginning and at the end. The second act is pretty meh, and while that might be the point, I was sorta going on autopilot when it came to the mystery elements. It also doesn’t help that the characters aren’t really that memorable aside from the main character and her “alter ego.” Overall, had a nice time with it, but I kinda dread this movie suddenly getting like 20 sequels milked out the ass like most other James Wan movies.

I've always loved horror movies. But these days, I'm kinda realizing I love horror movies as an idea. Because... in all honesty, I can't name a single horror movie that I could with good conscience call a truely great movie. The last one I feel like was better than expected was The Ritual. It felt like it had a fairly good start and setting, then realistic feeling scenario where I can imagine getting into, then admittedly really creepy atmosphere and an ending that I did not expect that served up something quite cool to me... (which however might be a negative for many, but was a positive for me as it played into something I really like. Trying to be vague as to not spoil anything). Yet, I could not say it was a truely great movie. The supernatural type of horror movies are so often so tiresomely similar that I'm absolutely sick of them. There's always a haunted house or a creepy kid or both and then stuff just happens.. They just always go way past subtle into exaggerated, always try to give some half assed explanation to some religion or ancient demon that they read about in books or notes and ... Idk, maybe something unexplainable would remain so much scarier? Isn't that the root of our fear when it comes to supernatural things? So in that sense, movies with real life murderers are more haunting. "Funny Games" comes to mind.. Or "The Strangers". I don't remember either one veery well but they remain in my mind as good movies that made me think "what if that happened to me?" in a way that lasted a bit past the viewing. With that said: *TL;DR* This halloween, at the end of the month I plan on watching tons of horror movies marathon style, so if anyone has some of their favorite horror movies to recommend; please do! (That is, if anyone even sees or reads this before it haha)

It felt to pointed towards the entity to be a thriller, and too “oooooo I wonder what happens next” to be horror. And as stated in the video the characters were just awful. Nothing about this movie required awfully written characters, so I don’t know why there even needs to be a point about “they aren’t he ones that drive the story.” Well characters should drive your story. And even so, they just don’t *have* to be as bad as they were. I was honestly cracking up during the movie when the main character gets home, and the moment she walks in her bedroom I went “omg, *sigh* I know what this is going to be.” Sure enough abusive lazy husband while wife out working 12 hour challenging job while pregnant and they can still somehow afford the house they live in. Then his 0-100 caricatured actions of what abuse are had me thinking I was watching a marvel movie with how hard he like thanos slammed her head into the wall. It just felt so pointless and out of place. Like it served the story basically zero for there to be an abusive husband. It’s just a thing rn. Like if it was a movie where sexism/ abuse is a major plot point then cool, but it’s literally just “oh btw, abusive husband. Oops guess he’s dead so we don’t have to worry about that anymore.” The cops are total cable cop show caricatures. I walked out sometime after the “oh this thing? Yeah I was at a dance” or whatever that stupid fucking dialogue was with the sister in the hospital. Like I swear every other movie that comes out tries to be like a “fun for the whole family” kind of thing. Like your sister got attacked by an entity, police are involved, her (abusive) husband is dead, and ya know what guys fuck it we really need some cheap comic relief riiiiggghhttt *here*. Like once again another thing that served no purpose and really just took away from the drama. They literally had to do nothing to increase the drama of the scene, and instead they added something stupid to undercut it. I really hate that trend sort of across the board with AAA movies rn, but it just made absolutely 0 sense to put it there. Idk what to call the trope, but it’s sort of like constant subversion. Like if a smartass trying to outwit movie logic, was BAKED INTO the movie itself. “Instead of just making a better movie, let’s just shit on the shitty movie we made! Lol that’d be so funny right?” it’s not even really camp. What made camp shit funny (30 years ago) was when like that was literally the best they could do. Not when u dump millions into a triple a 21st century production just for it to be “lol it’s so bad.” If you had to spend millions to make it that bad, it’s not actually funny. At least not to me. And it’s also like combined with all the “heavy” content, it has the same issue as American horror story. One minute it’s campy and stupid, and the next it’s “okay guys, but like seriously, abuse. It’s serious time >:(((((! Lol funny part. I totally didn’t expect to be totally taken out of the moment like that! Wait guys no they are talking about trauma it’s serious time again >:((((.” It’s not good camp, because it’s just like throwing a weighted line in, and dragging at the bottom to catch fucking anything. The camp isn’t part of the style, it’s just more shit thrown in there as a “everyone can have something to enjoy in the movie” thing. Like I said, it was actually like watching a parody of every general thing I could say about “hating new movies.” Which I really don’t, but if I did, every thing I hate would be in that movie. Oh yeah and the whole “cut out the cancer” like at the beginning of the movie. It was like watching an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie from the 90’s. Just to hedge my cynical bet, even if I give wan all the credit in the world, and assume he made this as the “horror killer” and was totally aware of how bad it was, I think he did a shit job. If this movie is trying to dunk on horror movies, it’s sucks cuz it was still trying to be one in the process. He’s honestly be his own biggest target with the shit he directed. Not to mention, horror tropes haven’t really gotten tired out yet. It’s just, well, nearly every horror movie that comes out now is just trash. It’s not exactly a hard target. Most people know this. I don’t wanna be a “omg hereditary” guy, but yeah I thought it was great. Same with Midsommar. U can still make good horror movies. So horror as a genre isn’t this awful thing, it’s just really lazily done by most people. And we really be out here in the hyper reality where absolute best case scenario, this movie is a lazy potshot at a genre that is 90% lazy writing. Best case scenario, it’s like making fun of a kid in a wheelchair, where the kid could’ve just stood up all along if someone just helped them.

I was not confused. I had some of the same comments to the characters. However I just watched it and went along. It wasn't bad. I appreciated it was somewhat original. I appreciated it and wish more films would adapt unadapted written material or be original. I'm also sick of jump scares. Now I wonder about him trying again. Also I had the twist spoiled prior to watching because I didn't think that it would be a twist (surprise) and I still was satisfied.

It seems like you're biggest praise is the build up. And I had the complete opposite experience. I feel like if you are able to recognize the signs early and identify the mystery early (Which isn't hard to do) it completely ruins that build up. And so the movie just falls short. So it definitely makes sense that people can take the movie differently.

I think a lot of people loved this movie a little bit more than what I expected was because of the fact that you pointed out, Hollywood is bloated with so many dogshit horror movies currently that this feels like something new and unique, it gives us something to talk about instead of just going "Yeah, good watch" or something. This movie is a mixed bag. I like and respect the originality, but there definitely needed to be a better explanation for what Gabriel actually is and why he can do the things he can do. Jason and Michael Myers are pretty self explanatory in that regard. They're huge and evil, Michael is inhuman does nothing but kill, while Jason kills for revenge when people are near his home (for the most part). Both are more or less zombie-like in the way they can't be killed and have little to no social skills. Freddy is a different beast in that he talks a lot and he has a fleshed out backstory even in the original movie. He was a child killer, parents burned him up, and via his evil and desire for revenge on them he gained the power to attack dreams. We don't get any explanation for Gabriel, he's just attached to her, somehow can control electronics to communicate, and somehow he has crazy powers for seemingly no reason. Sure, we don't get an explicit reason for Jason/Michael being so strong (and neither of them actually start off with superhuman strength, they both develop it over time), but we can also very easily postulate reasons for that based on the rest of the story and what we know about horror movies in general. This movie opens with a Kylo Ren style hissy fit destroying a hospital room, then Gabriel eventually can fight like Neo even though he'd barely even been walking or using that body, not to mention that he was using it backwards. I don't necessarily dislike any of his characteristics, but I need a better explanation for his abilities than what the movie gives. The part where he's beating down the cops is well shot action, but I wasn't a fan of it. It doesn't serve much of a purpose when we've already seen from the very beginning that he can kill anyone he feels like, we don't need the movie to prove that all over again. I don't think your comparison to the Terminator works because the Terminator is a robot whose capabilities we hadn't explored all that much up to the point where he attacks the police station. We see him take people down, but not anything that would indicate that a decently sized group of people couldn't stop him, until he wipes out the cops. The cop fight is a bit gratuitous here. On top of that, action fight scenes like that from superhero movies have been boring to me for a long time now. I'm not sure why audiences said they didn't like it to that high a degree, it definitely deserves around a 70% thumbs up vs down. It was far better than other hollywood horror these days, and the idea of a conjoined twin going evil is interesting also. Despite the low score, I think you're dead wrong on the haunted house/demon subgenre continuing as a result of this movie's reception, because people are going to those types of movies less and less. The conjuring movies might keep limping along a bit longer, but it won't last because people are generally losing interest and the franchise name means less with each subsequent sequel.

This movie was like that Stephen King book “The Dark Half”, except the parasitic twin takes over the body instead of growing it’s own. The twist of the movie was so lame and predictable that M. Night Shymalan wouldn’t use it. I had to put the film on 4 separate times to get through a full viewing because it just bored me enough that I’d wander off and do something else whenever I got to the hypnotherapist scene. I’m glad people enjoy it but just like all these horror movies in the last few years, it just doesn’t engage me.

This movie made me laugh more than it made me scared. I give it a thumbs up for originality, but it failed to keep my attention during the first hour. The 3rd act was decent, but overall laughable. The fight scene in the police station was pretty cool outside the fact that they reused the same sequence twice just from two different angles. The black cop gets stabbed in the neck and then thrown over the desk. Gabriel hitting them with a chair from Steph Curry range made me burst out laughing. 5/10

Apparently, you have little knowledge of the comics edited by William Gaines, because Malignant rips off a comic book story where a man falls in love with a beautiful girl with an ugly, evil sister, who seems to have limbs that bend the wrong way. I mostly liked the movie (one watching so far). Gabriel's uncanny movement was great, even more so after reading that it (for the most part) really wasn't CGI. My biggest problem was the big reveal being quite obvious from really early on, although the movie does its best to throw out some red herrings. I did enjoy the reverse UNO card twist at the end a lot more though.

Hmmm... you might actually be my ideal customer, mate! I may not fancy Malignant, but I like how you defended this flick and the older ones I grew up with. Like you dude, I grew up with the classics, like A Nightmare on Elm Street, Evil Dead, TCM, Friday the 13th, and The Blob (saw the 80s one first), The Thing, The Fly, etc. Fuck dude, even Dead/Alive! Like you, I miss the classic horrors, where the Antagonist is a legit threat, who doesn't give a single fuck about who they kill, like men, women, and children and pets! Shit that gets under your skin! Scenes that put you on the edge of your seat, and disturbs you. When you get disturbed about one scene in a horror flick, you never forget that experience. Here's my example: In TCM, where he puts that chick on a hook and she's forced to watch Leatherface cut up her boyfriend. In The Thing, where Norris' torso opens up and eats Copper's arms off and his head tries to escape the fire. In Evil Dead...pretty much every scene with the Deadites! I want to do a similar deal with my horror flicks, make disturbing sequences that your brain will never forget, with an equally memorable antagonist. So far in the pipework, I'm doing a sci-fi horror, and an Old West horror screenplays. Still writing both and hoping to get my studio set up, so I don't have to work with the creatively inept producers of the bigger studios. I'm sorry, but once you go Woke, you're dead to me...well that and the other things wrong with Hollywood, and you all know what I'm talking about. I would prefer just to own and operate my own studio, on the similar vein as Eric D July with his Rippverse. I hope I win your approval.

Not cuz the twist simply cuz it just becomes a different movie but in the best way . I also loved the second half cuz the gore and the chase scene was filmed beautifully, imo . I love this movie for all the reasons you’ve stated. I love the 70’s demon and ghost haunted house movie, and honestly when done well they scare me the most, but I need variety in all genres, especially my favourite, horror. Hereditary is my single favourite horror film, but the ones I think about rewatching are the fun ones. The iconic villains. Freddy, Pinhead, Chucky and yes, now Gabriel. The movie was sooo dumb and silly but clearly out of love with specific intention. The cheese hit just right and I loved having such a different, wacky villain that despite being all those things, is also visually really horrifying. I found the movie pretty predictable for the most part but just because I saw the plot twists coming doesnt mean I enjoyed it any less. It made me excited to see how everything unfolds. My only hope is it inspires other film makers and lovers of horror to try something new and just have fun with it. Sadly, how poorly this movie was received by general audiences worries me it may scare most off more than anything. But I have faith.
