It's 90% effort. I broke down his rim defense over the season. Basically when the he and the team were healthy and engaged, his rim defense was good (like -6%) to great (-15%) but he had other stretches where he was practically apathetic. And he was a good rim protector at Memphis and showed flashes as a rookie. It's there. So long as you aren't expecting him to carry bad defenders, which was the case for huge stretches. But only Wemby can do that. I think it's mostly about getting these guys in a healthy environment. They all have the tools and intelligence to be good defenders

We as pistons fans always think that TRADING guys is the best way to improve. Unfortunately guys, the talent on this roster isn’t that wanted around the league. You’d have to give up too much. Get a coach that actually can develop guys. Be patient with duren ivey and ausar. Use the cap space wisely. Stay the course. Change the coaching staff asap. Get a talented, YOUNG and ready coach. Be patient. So what are we gonna do? Sign Tobias, trade duren for Ingram and win 30 games? Watch Ingram get hurt and only play 40 games a year? Give him 208 mil for 40 to 60 games a year? Sign a washed Tobias Harris? Just accept that this franchise will be terrible for a while bro. Only hope we have is if Cade, Ivey, duren, and ausar can get better. Player development is the most important move of this off season.

@@cordelldemattei5446 although Troy wasn’t perfect, he made it possible to have cap space this summer. He didn’t hit on every pick. But Cade, Ivey, ausar, stew, grimes, Fontecchio, duren, and Sasser is a nice foundation. If the pistons had better player development, they’d be even better. Troy’s problem was asset management. Us owing picks to New York. Not having any additional first rounders for trades. Holding on to bojan and burks too long. That’s why I think he lost his job. The foundation is in place. Let’s be patient and smart. Don’t mess it up to win 35 games and barely make the play in.

I agree with your assessment of Troy and if they can make enough moves using just cap space to put a decent product on the floor it would be great. But, I don’t think it is possible and at least one of the ‘core’ guys will be gone to speed up the process. Pretty much every team goes through this, no one holds on and develops all their draft picks during a rebuild.

After firing Weaver it would be awkward to keep all his draft picks. Ironically Monk and Claxton are basically what we hope Ivey and Duren become. I can't help but suspect we Sign Monk and Claxton, and Naji Marshall, then trade Ivey and Duren for Ingram.

If they are only Monk and Claxton that would be ... disappointing. They will likely be better than those guys But on that note, Malik Monk had 38/33 shooting splits in year 2 (and 42/28 in year 3) and was in a face off with Trae Young for the worst defender in the NBA Claxton barely even played his second year Also it's not college football. You don't bring in your own players via the portal. Usually in these situations the new GM just gets to watch the young players blossom under his watch and get the credit

If they do t believe in Duren as a rim protector or a good defensive player then I’m fine with moving him for someone who fit that role. That’s not a diss or slander to Duren. Hes got a lot of potential, but he’s a raw talent that fans value highly for his potential. Wanting to keep Down is valid, but also wanting to move him and replace him with a more established guy like Claxton is also valid. The return for Duren and Ivey should be used to get Cade help that you can pair with him along with Ausar. Again, this doesn’t mean that Duren or Ivey are bad or don’t have the potential to be all stars. It’s about fit next to Cade and filling a role the Pistons need filled.

Trading Duren would be laughable. No one trades a young big that was coached by a coach that didn’t want to be here. When Dan Burke left early in the season, the team defense suffered. The first move should be hiring a head coach and get their input on the roster. Not someone who doesn’t want to coach.

Trading Duran and/Ivey is fine as long as they are getting fair value in return. They shouldn’t just trade them just to trade them. They’re on cheap contracts, not hurting their cap situation, if they can’t get fair value, keep them. What is the rush to trade them?

@@fluffysockninja People have short term memory and irrational expectations Chet and Wemby really made people think _that's_ normal and they forgot that most bigs are bad defensively early in their careers What's funny is Duren has already fixed one of his biggest weaknesses as a defender in college which was jumping at everything. He does a good job staying down and using his length. Idk that he'll ever be elite, but physically he has all the tools you need. The biggest issue is he plays in a deep drop and he just doesn't have the standing reach to make that work.

I think the best thing the Pistons can do for Duren is move him to Power Forward and pick up a rim protecting center that can also stretch the floor on offense like a Porzingis type player. Maybe draft the center from UConn if he’s available, I think Duren would thrive with that type of front court mate because right now Duren is playing out of position he’s an undersized center that’s not really a rim protector

He can play a bam adebyo type center role. So hard to say because it was regression or non development from all the young players outside of Cade/Stew. Statistically at his age he compares favorably to Al horford. Obvi Al developed a 3 ball. Not sure if that will be his game but defensively I can see an Al horford trajectory.

He'd lose too much information by releasing everybody so quickly, since he had no way to keep the FO around as he was basically their replacement

I think Claxton is borderline elite at his job and I wish Duren could be like that We have to remember this franchise drafted (25 years old) Rodman and signed Ben Wallace. Ku, I thought JJ to the Lakers was all but done. Now I hear it’s going to be Hurley in LA. Has Monty not been ousted because we can’t get JJ until the Finals are done since he’s announcing. Doesn’t leave much time predraft. But the GM is more important than coach for that. We’d be great for JJ as a first time coach, he can almost not fail since anything would look good compared to Monty (and I believe JJ can coach).

Whether we move on from Monty or not is up in the air. However, one of two things needs to happen somewhat soon. He needs to either be fired, or publicly endorsed by Trajan. It cannot be a secret to them that Monty is not popular with much of the fan base. The noise against him is so loud that it demands a reaction if you are doing your job right. I'm good waiting a little longer, but at some point they have say he is staying if he truly is. It cannot go unsaid like it normally would with a guy in the second year of a 6 year deal. This situation is way different. Personally, a coaching change is needed to get my blood flowing again. Which is crazy because hiring Monty got my blood flowing last year. But I was never comfortable with the fact that we had to add zeros until he couldn't turn it down. Lesson learned with that hiring practice.

Sign Jonas Valenciunas to back up duren and start if he doesn’t figure it out. That way you get a legit center while still giving duren a little more time to develop. Ivey is tricky bc they have grimes and could sign a shooter see Gary Trent/Monk. You could also add a mo bamba as a floor spacer on a cheap contract who’s still young. This will give us another year or half a year to see what these guys can do. The biggest thing is removing the COACH who stunted the development of the players.

Free agency availability probably determines who Detroit moves on from. Duren hasn’t shown he has the instincts to be a good defender, it’s highly improbable he’ll ever be as good as Claxton on D. Claxton probably won’t ever be as good as Duren on offense, but we really need our C to protect the paint. Claxton already has been in the DPOY race so he’s already shown he can do it. Cade will make Claxton better on offense too, helping him get a few more easy ones every game, the Nets PG play was awful. Monk is what Ivey could be if Ivey just cut his turnovers down, upped his efficiency a little bit, and got a little more sturdy on D. Which are all realistic for a young player like Ivey. Claxton mirrors what Jarret Allen was in his free agency. It would immediately improve our defense and make us more competitive. Just gotta add some shooting after that.

Duren better and look at Rudy a Defensive center doesn't help ish. Most of ths time its someone elses man blowing by them. Why is under sized bad defensive stew starting?? He can't cover stretch or bigger players or small ball. Duren has showed he wants to shoot. We can put him at the 4 and have a center. We can even draft a defensive center for cheaper. Who can grow with us.

Ivey is faster then monk and monk does careless things as well. He is hot and cold but he isn't that playoffs showed he is a role player. Who can have big moments. Iveys ceiling is higher. The things he can do as well are way different from Monk.

I don’t think we moving from Monty. He was a coach of the year and got his team to the chip the year before. Now his time with us has been the worst ever. But I think you have to give him a chance and if it don’t work , fire him. Now Ben Wallace on switch ups. Ben was regularly blocking 3 pt shooters. He can guard 1-5 easily.

Because he's a liability on defense and prevents you from playing paint defense. If Duren isn't interested, he's not going to develop. If he has to play behind Claxton for a year or two, maybe he makes some effort on defense.

THANK YOU! For whatever reason, Monty could not get the best from his players. You have a coach like Eric Spolestra that is able to squeeze every drop of talent out of 2nd rounders and G leaguers. Monty had enough talent to win more than 14 freaking games. Seriously people. In only his 2nd year, Duren is a better scorer, passer, and rebounder than Claxton. AND he even shoots better free throws by a WIDE margin. But y'all want to ship out a developING 3rd year player for a developED 6th year player - that ain't getting any better? Claxton's defense is not going to catapult the Pistons to 40+ wins.

Ay Ku been on it lately. Thank God, because them bad takes killed me away from the pod TBH. I didn't think Duren should be traded, but used Stew in limted mins at the 4/5. Let him be interchangeable. If we get Monk, Claxton, Harris and a stretch 4. This team will be a play-in team. Especially with the right coach that will play Duren and Claxton about 20 mins each and Stew the rest.

First I’m not sure either are being traded with those new pieces. All of them except, Nic Claxon are not stars. Just good role players. I can see Harris coming off the bench with Grimes. I can see Monk being a 6th man. These are just Pro players , the Pistons don’t have now. Our issue last year everybody is forgetting about was INJURIES and no one being around to do anything about it. You don’t have to move on Duren because you get Claxton. We seen how big of a role Naz Reid played last year. We see how big of a role Livley and Gafford is still playing. We seen what happen when Cade sits. The team goes to shyt.

The best available shot blocking 5(center) available this year is Zach Eddney, he turns the Pistons into a defensive juggernaut overnight at 7’4 he can hold bigs like Kristaps Porzingas, Wemby,Embied and the Joker in check, we need to be able to matchup with those guys period

Theres no way JLE has a pulse on Langdon's direction before press signing. Come on, hes not speaking for the team, he doesnt even know if Monty is coming back. Claxton over duren would be a major mistake. Claxton is not what you think. He blocks shots but hes not a major impact center and worse than 20 yr old duren in many other ways, not counting $.

Gary Harris off the bench... sure. Definitely not as a starter, that dude can barely play 50 games, averages 6 pts off 25 mins lol. If after talking to monty the president feels like montys vision matches his vision than the "logical" thing to do is keep him and get players that matches his coaching style. I got no problem giving monty another with real nba talent and seee what he does. Not understanding all the monty hate when he literally came here to a g-league roster.

Ben could switch on defense I think. He was athletic enough. I'd still take Chauncey. To me he would bring the stability and ball protection this team desperately needs, and he was good enough off ball to play alongside Cade. I totally get the Rasheed pick but Chauncey was just a much more impactful overall player.

Isiah hartenstein should be the target a great backup veteran big to play behind JD, Monk is best as a bench player not a starter he’s not better than Ivey as a starter or a better fit next to Cade than Ivey is Duren is perfectly capable of playing defense he’s a natural shot blocker you can look back to him at Memphis Monty left Duren out to dry with terrible drop defense that also costs him blowing a finals vs Giannis Monty terrible it’s a reason why D Ayton hates him

Duren is way young. Keeping him, when you don't have anything better, is realistic. Maybe he will figure it out. Meanwhile, since you have nothing better on your roster, you wait. You, good sir, are one of these "immediate gratification" guys. You have to be patient with 20 year old players. And you are ANYTHING but patient, even your speaking voice is stressed, uptight and wired. I think maybe you drink a gallon of coffee for breakfast. You are on "GO" every second. Pistons are going to have to build this thing slowly and I bet this is going to drive you nuts. You like to finger scapegoats. Monty Williams was never the problem. Duren was never the problem. I bet they both get at least one more year, maybe two.

Monty is currently THE biggest problem remaining with this team if he coaches like last season. Misused players, terrible rotations, no development. He needed to be fired by game 20 of last season and I’m worried that Trajan didn’t show him the door alongside Troy.

Ku you want immediate action and transparency every step of the way. That’s not how any front office works. Langdon and the Pistons are relaying that his future is being evaluated. Why would they publicly say which way they’re leaning? You already pointed out that you recognize that a press conference haven’t happened because he likely want to have his full staff in place. I don’t see how it’s weird then knowing that. We gotta be more patient instead of thinking all decisions would made instantaneous.

Nic Claxton is a 55% free throw shooter plus I think he is close to his peak now. Duran has way more up side. His free throw percentage went from 61% is rookie season to about 79% last season. I believe he’ll be a much better player than Claxton before the end of Claxton’s next contract

Malik Monk, Claxton and Garry Harris. So we will be starting monk and once more slowing Iveys progression. Garry Harris is a bum. Do you watch him play?? Thats not a good fit dude can't hit threes when it matters. Claxton can be our center but Duren can be a bam type he showed flashes. That would make duren have to shoot more as the 4. Elbow to 16 footers. This is a spread out you're bench year and develope prospects. Now we trading our young guys for two people who are old. And that we know of. Maybe get Beef stew out of the starting lineup. Rim protection when this tean is small. That all isn't on Duren the team sucks at defence. Ivey will now be kobe white from chicago but he should be a starting 2.

Duren has showed he is willing to shoot. All of you have to be smoking Ausar is a 4 and not a wing. Duren should be or mid range face up big. He has showed prowess taking 5s and 4s off the dribble. That should be focused on. Like his passing but he needs to stop being careless and fancy with passes. We need him to be our stretch big or draft that stretch big in the draft.

Monty is the reason for all of this. He's is not a player development coach and he didn't want to be Detroit at all. Now young talent gets traded. Players who were meant for something greater are moved to the bench because the coach didn't put them in position to succeed. Only to be replaced by career role players like Claxton, Monty and or Harris who are solid contributors but are better suited as bench player not your mainline starters. 1 horrible year destroyed all the promise that the core 4 could have been. This is a sad sight. All because of leadership incompetence.

@@teezzz9645 I’m an Ivey fan, but right now Monk is better. Turnovers and efficiency are definitely better with Monk, defensively also. I think Ivey can get there it’s just gonna take few years. Duren hasn’t shown the defensive instincts to be a defensive player like Claxton. I think that’s more important from a non shooting C, if you’re C doesn’t stretch the floor he has to protect the paint.

center and poa defense have been premium the last 10 years, never went way. But the league changed after the all-star break. Scoring has plummeted since mid February and refs are allowing way more contact. This has been the best NBA I've watched in a while

On paper, Claxton has a 1 block advantage on Duren. Duren wins pretty much every other category... on paper. Not to mention Claxton's atrocious free throw shooting...
