I'll never forget my new years experience at St. Kilda Beach at Melbourne. I went there at just before midnight to watch the fireworks and some random person came up to us and asked us to hold his things while he went for a swim and we didnt think much of it but when he didnt return about 15-20 mins later we got a little worried and went looking and we saw someone floating in the water only about 10-20 meters out so i walked out to get him while someone i was with went aand got help because he was barely concious. We found out a couple mins later by the police and a paramedic that he confessed he had a terrible year and tried to commit suicide by just floating out to sea because he didnt want to live through the next year and the poor guy was only 23 at the time. He made it to hospital and was all safe but ill never forget it.

Most of the preventable issues aren't from natives that know the water. Same here in Florida. Its tourists that don't know how to handle the rippers
@patronsaintofpoison
@patronsaintofpoison 2 года назад
I live in Las Vegas, and I can tell you that it's always the tourists who are stressful. They don't know anything about survival at the location, they just come to party and abandon all their knowledge of lawfulness and normalcy. Many tourists seem to think they have the right to act like idiots, because they are bringing in business. But they need to realize there are thousands of other visitors who don't misbehave. Its not anybody's right to act poorly, doesn't matter if you're paying. People working in the "service industry" as we call it are NOT slaves. Like the lifeguards in this show, every day they see stupidity. It's a wonder they don't get disillusioned. Maybe Australians are just naturally more calm and easygoing. These guys are definitely heroes. It's not easy to maintain a positive attitude despite everything

So glad the physician cervical injury did ok! Bondi lifeguards we’re on the spot with their excellent care. I think the city of Sydney should reward these men and women with an equivalent of a “Super Bowl ring” after a year’s service. I hope to God they are well-compensated for this noble service. These people save lives EVERYDAY and no doubt save the city millions of dollars. They deserve recognition. I also hope the producers are generous with these superstars, without which they’d have no show. Do the lifeguards even have a clue about how much revenue they produce? I doubt it.

What an awesome work ethic these lassies and laddies have! I am American and have had two ex-pat Australian bosses in my life (in the US and the UK). They both spoke disparagingly about “Australian work ethic” - this is certainly not evident in these Bondi Beach Lifeguard crews. Very dedicated and extremely hard working! They set an example for us all. They display impeccable technique performing spinal precautions, resuscitation and first aid. They routinely err on the side of caution for their patients, which is exactly what you want. I further appreciate and applaud their use of the term “patients” when referring to the people they rescue and assist - this reinforces a level of professionalism and reverence. You Bondi Lifeguards are very lucky to have such camaraderie and esprit de corps in your ranks. God bless you all!

Many years ago I was in Australia at Monkey Mia on the west coast. Having been an accomplished gymnast in my youth I did a handspring into the ocean but misjudged the sea floor and seriously injured my neck. I got up ok and me and my mate laid down on the beach and went to sleep for an hour or so. When I woke up I felt fine. Fast forward 12 years and several X-rays and MRIs and I’ve got severe arthritis on my spine. I suppose the moral of the story is have fun but be careful, and I probably should have sought medical attention straight away.

TL;DR: I love your self confidence Mitch, but understanding HOW to do something and actually being CAPABLE of doing something are two totally different things. There are a lot of physical and mental demands on lifeguards that can’t be learned by reading a book or watching videos, they can only be learned by doing the job. Becoming a good lifeguard takes a lot of time and can’t be “aced straight away”. I love your level of self confidence, however it might not be as easy as you think. From a pool lifeguard (who has good open water confidence as a swimmer and surfer) to a potential future lifeguard (pool or open water), it is important to remember that there is a huge learning curve between what a book or video can teach a person and what can only be learned through experience and repetition. Knowing the steps to doing something is only part of the job, you must also have the physical strength, physical and mental ability, the ability to react quickly and with precision while maintaining a level head, etc. Mother Nature is a tough woman and she will deal you lots of tough blows (massive waves, strong winds, rain, rip currents, etc), but a persons mind in times of crisis can deal even worse blows than Mother Nature does. The fight or flight response can cause people to act erratically in a crisis, even when that same person (not in a crisis situation) could never dream of responding in a manner that may endanger others. People who are drowning and begin to panic tend to lose the ability to think rationally and may ultimately put the life of the person saving them at risk (that’s why there are so many dual rescues when a person and their friend or relative are out swimming together. Many times, the weaker swimmer will grab on to the other person in an attempt to stay above water, and they end up pushing their friend/relative under water. They can do this same thing to a lifeguard, so it is important for the lifeguard to know how to make a safe approach so they don’t become a victim as well. As a lifeguard instructor (again, in a pool environment) I had to teach this safe approach technique to my students, and also teach them how to escape the victims grasp should the victim start pulling/pushing their rescuer underwater.)

I'm not sure if fake drowning is illigal / fined in Australia or anywhere else but it should be.

I am amazed at the low level of understanding that so many people who go to this beach have of water and, in particular, of the sea. Some of the people the lifeguards rescue truly could drown in waist deep water. Even though many people who go to Bondi Beach don't speak English, is there no way to communicate to all people who can't swim, people who have never been in the water, that it is a serious danger to them? And their children! Maybe post pictures with captions in several languages? It's sheer madness out there.

I remember when I was at a water park and there was a pool that had weaves every hour for abt 10-15 minutes, me and my cousin wanted to go closer to the BIG weaves and we held onto a couple ropes that were there to hold onto and like 5 minutes in I accidentally let go and started going under (I was a short cubby 10 year old) and I can’t look under water (still can’t) so I just Swam towards a way and I apparently swam towards the place the weaves where coming out of so I got saved by a lifeguard, if it wasn’t for lifeguards I probably would have serious problems rn, all I want to say is that you guys are awesome!❤️

I fake drowned when I was about 6 or 7. Barbados life guards jumped in the pool and manhandled me infront of the entire hotel. They walked me (pale, ginger and red faced) to my parents. I will never do that again

I feel so sorry for Harries getting attacked by those 3 drunk women.You could see the horror on his face and he only laughs it off because he felt embarrassed and didn't know what to do.Also,all the other lifegaurds looking on from the tower and laughing at him didn't help and wasn't right,they should 've rang the police.

I have so much admiration for these life guards, having to deal with so many idiots who ignore the signs and warnings to get out of the water. Why can't people have fun without drink and drugs, I have no time for their selfish idiocy as for that utter moron, playing dead for attention, his kind need to be arrested and slung in jail for wasting the life guards time and putting others in danger.
