For the first time in democratic South Africa, the Mangaung Metro Municipality in the Free State has a council speaker from a different political party. The Democratic Alliance's Maryke Davies has been elected through a secret ballot at a special council meeting in Bloemfontein.
Davies won with 53 votes, beating the ANC's Lawrence Mathae, who received 40 votes. Mathae, who is also Mangaung ANC Chairperson, was sworn in as a councillor on Tuesday.
