Filipinos were educated and literate up to 20% of the population before the Americans came. One of the higher ones in Asia at that time and in a European technical language. Japan was about 40% at this time for comparison. Spain was 60%. How do we know that Filipinos would not have been able to educate themselves had they been allowed autonomy? Jose Rizal proved in Dapitan what one excellent educator can do without outside resources.

The Japanese had already undergone their wars of unification before Westerners showed up & Thailand was under unified rule of a king. But just think, what if PH was allowed to undergo its own wars of unification with every sultan fighting for supremacy until 1 ruled supreme? Magellan would have been turned away - firmly. Just a dream & even as I think about it, Pinoys back then were believers in peaceful coexistence, not armed warfare with neighboring sultanates or tribes.

THAILAND served as a “buffer” between the British and the French - to prevent any confrontation, the thing they were sick of doing for centuries in Europe. (Prolly same logic to what Spain and Portugal did when they technically divided the new world into two spheres in the Treaty of Tordesillas). 2. One of the terms/conditions of the alliance between the USA/Roosevelt Gov’t w/ Britain’s Churchill during WW2 was DECOLONIZATION - which they upheld through the United Nations - advocating for the right to self-determination, human rights, etc., etc. That is why many countries immediately gained “independence” after WW2. USA did not want a protracted war in the Japanese Mainland (hence the dropping of the 2 suns). WHEN -- two suns were dropped in Japan, the latter was under USA for reconstruction and occupation for 7 years - and under close military supervision aka under the US’ Military Umbrella, even until now. The history is respectful enough to not call it a colonization (for the reasons stated above - and also because Japan prolly “earned” respect when it showed that it can stand up against the USA/West. Japan’s intelligence, unity, hard work, discipline… and friendship w/ the USA - who shared its R&D, innovations, machinery, and technology TO combat communism - Japan turned out to be an economic powerhouse. An economic miracle. 3. What IF the Philippines was “allowed” to undergo its wars of unification … WELL, that’s exactly conflicting w/ the concept of Colonization isn’t it? There is no recognition, “allowance”, nor freedom when a powerful country takes over the weaker one. AND, conquest is conquest regardless of skin color or culture. AND, no - “Filipinos” were not in peaceful co-existence. Do you have any idea why the Aeta-s are located in the Mountains? OR why some group such as the Lumad, chose to live in the elevated areas? Who drove them away before the white people came? Have you heard of the head hunters of Ifugao? Who were they fighting? Even Rajah Humabon and Lapu-Lapu were enemies. IN FACT, it was Humabon who goaded the Spaniards to attack Lapu-Lapu. P.S. You know what’s sad? Our records of Philippine history are mainly from the Spanish and Chinese records, and some from the Jesuit Missionaries e.g. records of Sultan Kudarat.

Poverty has been present during that time. 3 of my grandparents did not even reach college level because of poverty in provinces and they had to work blue collar jobs in Manila like driver and maid in order to survive. Many Filipinos from poor regions in Cebu and Ilocos left for Hawaii to work as indentured laborers "sakada". Also there are many 1950's Filipino films that depict poverty like Anak Dalita (1956), Squatters (1953) and Waray Waray (1954).

There was NO waste water treatment facilities back then and even now in most part of Greater Manila area. No corruption? Again, dream on. It is during this time in Philippine history that 2 party political system existed. If you want to run for the coming election you have to bribe the party bosses or you can not run for the said election. Money talks back then and so does it today. No squatters? Dream some more. Land ownership this time was not that strictly enforced for reasons of impracticality and lack of enforcement on the part of the authorities for they had more pressing problems back then.
