毛利語是新西蘭原住民毛利人的語言。 現在新西蘭約有734,200毛利人。雖然新西蘭距離馬來群島頗遠. 但有趣的是, 有些毛利語和馬來語非常相似。

Malay people and all Austronesian people share a mother root, likely Lapita 3,000 years ago. They came from Southern China. Then 2,000 years ago, evidence of Papuan peoples (call it the father root) spread out into South East Asian, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. These Papuans became known as thee 'Negrito'. South East Asia, through this entire time until today has experienced waves of constant swirling continued migration amongst its other South East Asian nationalities AND influx of Chinese and Indian races. Polynesians stayed mostly isolated, experienced what seems to be 2 or 3 waved (Lapita, Papuan and later South American Native) I say a South American Native because maybe the Maori who had contact with South American natives starting 800 years ago, traded with them and learned some cultural behaviors.

Towards the center of activities where civilization flourished (the Western parts - closer to other civilizations), the lingua franca of the entire region is Malay, and the people of this region were referred to as the Malays, who generally have brown (sawo matang) skin. Usually the head of the islands/tribes would know the Malay language as they wld go/visit/mingle with leader/s of the region/s as that is the known/universal language spoken within the entire region. Thus, the Malay language being the lingua franca for this region. Cheerio.
