I think it’s easy to say you haven’t improved in 2 years, but remember you haven’t been training for the 1500m. You’ve been training for a marathon and they’re such incredibly different events
Can you do a video for what you would do if you don't love the grind? I'm not a runner. I am legally blind and my Dr just diagnosed me with a rare painful heart condition. A few months ago after I was diagnosed I wanted something to help me stay focused and not sad all the time. All the motivational videos were not helping. I needed something out of the box. That is when I found your videos. In a crazy way, your videos helped me get up out of bed, get dressed, and do one task each day. Lol love the grind 😅 Right now, I am rebuilding my body and my mind and it's a struggle. But what do you do if you don't love grind? Anyway I love your videos. Thank you for being so honest. You are helping people like me. Thank you❤
Your mindset totally changed after talking to your coach (I assume that’s who you spoke to). Got you out of that negative space. Really really good to put everything in perspective Phily. That was an incredible run. And great pacing 👌
I can't tell you how much I appreciate seeing your instinctive reactions to dissapointment as well as your rationalisations afterwards, I've felt myself slipping into the trap of needing to be faster every run and it's destroying the joy of it, the way you process things is so insightful and really valuable, so thank you!
I had pacing duties for the first time this week & absolutely completely fell in love with it! What an experience! Helping someone else crush their goal & come up with something that they didn’t think they could do was just so awesome! Going to be doing some more of that whenever I can!!!!
Phily as my pacemaker… the dream! I think that was the shining moment of this video. Getting to see you switch into supporter/encourager mode was inspiring. You definitely have a gifting there. ❤
I really appreciate you showing your initial disappointment and emotions, followed by how you flipped your perspective a little bit later! That's super helpful and insightful! Thank you for that vulnerability!
Kind of excited to watch this because the 1500 is likely the event I’m going to put most of my energy into to PTQ for the 2028 Paralympics!! Always fun to see how other kind of athletes do in your distance 👀
I ran in that 5000m, was not loving the grind went horribly for me, but the fact I made it into you video made it all worth it, love your stuff Phily! And considering all a great performance in the 1500, just a reflection of that moment in time doesn't mean it correlates to what you are capable of :)
As a masters miler myself since the early 70s, I'd say this was very brave of you, Philly. "You can destroy yourself in just one mile." - legendary miler Steve Scott (He ran the sub four-minute mile on 136 occasions in his career, more than any other runner in history.)
Ya live, ya race, ya learn--and sometimes you do it all within the span of one video, and you share the wisdom with your community. It's a gift, Phily, and we thank you for it! And we thank you for YOU! (By the way: "boxy"! That's IT! That's the word for how that feeling feels!)
you can't expect getting better in pole vault while training long jump. Both is about jumping but the training is completely different. You've done VERY good Phily!!
Hahaha! Love seeing your cat "helping" you to limber up. I was trying to stretch my hip flexer earlier and my cat jumped up and sat on my thigh! (Sods law - now I'm relaxing on the couch, watching your video, she's nowhere to be seen - but the minute I try to do something, I'm sure she'll be there to help!)
Best part of this, is you verbalize the entire thing, from the immediate reactionary emotions to the finish, the contemplation, the reasoning, the plan, the encouragement. Disappointment happens, but this feels like healthy approach to it, bravo. 🙌
Hi Phily and Co., congrats for all the videos they are fun and so motivating, even to improve my English as well (I'm from Barcelona), It would be a great idea to rec a video about how you use the Elastic Rubber for the warm up.... or to recovery as well. Go on to 100k!!! Come On Phily!!!
I heard a great mantra recently, for when things aren't quite going your way; "to the moon-not now, but soon" I guess that's what your coach is working on, these experiences propelling you onward & upwards 💪🚀
Love the grind! The good and the bad, did a 35k trail race with 2000 meters elevation, second half was horrible, but finished the damn thing in 5h25. Loved the grind!🥴😂😎
5:06 I guess there's a reason they call it a "back log"? I'd be scheduling regular races to take care of this :) Pacing is awesome! Love seeing you do and enjoy this.
A bit mad to throw yourself into a 1500.. but hats off you you for doing it lol ! They do so much fast work- and clearly not your diet right now. Nice work on the pacing... :)
Interesting seeing the three different energy levels (pre-race, immediately post-race and "upon reflection..."). It's tough not to be hyped about Nandos with bestiest but I think you know you did a good job on the day having had time to think about it. Also - half a second off your PB without specific training is mega!
You are cool and funny to watch, it's the right attitude to take on this sport of running which is very hard, I am a 70 year old and running makes me feel like 40 or 50 year old, keep on thriving for your goals and dreams never give up.
I actually found this to be a really fun video. A perfect mix of racing cats and mobility. Philly does have a unique method of packing I don't think she should advise the rest of us duplicate unless we spend years perfecting it.
It's crazy how emotions and logic don't always work together. It sucks to feel disappointed, but it's okay to feel that way. I think it's healthy how you self talk through it. I had a similar experience running a mile, wanted so bad to break 5 minutes I'd lined up some pacing, I felt had the fitness, and I felt urgent as it was late fall and snow was about to fall. But it just wasn't so. Even though I did get a 2 second PB I still felt let down and disappointed. I guess it's part of the game and part of what makes grind meaningful. The victories can only feel so good because the failures feel bad. From the outside it's really impressive. I never felt like the first mile race of the season was anything near my potential, just because of the pain and dealing with it. It's so easy to feel panicked and give in to the body yelling, "stop you fool!". To run a small PB or anywhere near your PB on a first effort just speaks volume on the training you've done. To be at that speed without specific training shows how much stronger your aerobic engine has gotten. It compensated well for lack of preparation and training of your anaerobic engine. Really impressive.
The fact that you were able to go from a race that didn't go the way you wanted to, directly to supporting someone else having maybe not so great a day, really speaks to your mental strength - love the grind 🤙❤️🏃♀️
It was great to see your reaction to the pacing, sounded lots of fun. It makes me wonder if a great video would be you talking though some of the coaching you do?
8:29 - Yes, it is. I once laughed in the face of a roommate several years after I retired after he told me that he could easily keep up with the Olympic field in the 1500M, "because they're just jogging," or some similar rot. The 1500M, at this level, would KILL most people by shock.
What would you say to one of your athletes, you coach, if they had been training for longer distance, then annoyed with themselves for not improving over 1500ms. It's important to put things into perspective.
its fun to watch how a pro athlete navigates hurdles like disappointment. You could see in real time how she justified the performance and turned a negative to a positive. By the end she was proud again. great!
You don't run or train for 1500's for that run to be scrutinized and draw any strong conclusions. Your competitive instinct can be annoyed, that's a good thing as long as it doesn't to lead to fear (of poor performance) crippling you. Embrace it, love the grind.
Specificity is an underestimated portion of the pie. If you haven't trained for middle distance or top end, then PBs will be hard or impossible. Don't beat yourself up, onto the next
Great achievement Phily 💪🏼😎 You habe massively improved ☝🏼But of course your aerobic system. Your anaerobic system could be tuned in ony a few weeks and you would smash your 1500m PB, but there is no need to it (if you want to still focus on the marathon) So it‘s absolutely impressive that you are at the same level on the 1500m. So called „functional“/encymatical adaptions (improving your anaerobic capacity) is always faster to acheive then improving your aerobic capacity. Keep it up, an keep on rising 🚀🚀💪🏼💪🏼
I'm doing all long runs at d moment and done a mile road race Friday (4.51) last 400.i was breathing but no air would go in, totally different pure hell but kind of enjoyable
That intro is so dramatic 😂😂😂😂 Your last video was legit something like - "I JUST RAN MY FASTEST EVER 10KM!!""" A week later, oh im soooooo disappointed 😂😂😂😂
I'd vote Ciara for president, the next best thing to our lovely Michael D. What a gem of a human and a friend. Phily you're a goddamn athlete and an inspiration to literally thousands of women. LOVE THE GRIND
Quality Phily! You may of seen exact video from myself a month ago, but that was literally weeks after Manchester Marathon so no time to recover. Why so harsh on yourselves at the end? I too am very competitive, but don’t have same reaction after a race.
As Seb Coe once said, everyone can run, not everyone can run fast ! World class marathon runners can all run well at shorter distance and so many runners neglect the benefits that faster work brings.
@@lionheart4552 I've run one. The experience it took getting to that point taught me how hard running is, and how fickle individual performances can be. Really though, the thing you're lacking is empathy and common sense. Phily isn't training for a 1500, she's training for something 30 times longer. She did the only thing she needed to do, which is show up and race.
Quite honestly, Philly, I'm not sure what you could reasonably have expected. What specific 1500 preparation have you done over the last couple of years? Answer, NIL!! How would a highly trained 1500 runner cope with the last ten miles of a marathon? Not very well, I'd suggest! Whe I was racing 1500s seriously i occasionally "raced" a 400. Did Ibenjoy it? No because I was always well beaten - but it served its purpose, it helped the 1500. you have to look at this 1500 in that light.
I'm pretty sure I'm out of my depth every time I "race" in the middle or back of the pack of every half marathon I do... I figure, if I can still "run" when I'm super old I'll beat everyone that way. I'm 5ft tall ... Girl gotta dream.
max anaerobic type efforts seem to have the ability to make a person feel bad about themselves, especially when you arent used to them. I know just how you feel
You are too tough on yourself, Phily. Just look at it as a speed session that hurt more than others because you seldom do that type of training. I know few if any of the middle distance runners could defeat you in the marathon. You are a great runner and person, the latter being the best category of all!
What were you wearing a hat for at 15?!?! THAT on it's own could have cost you a PB!! 😂 (Get some more speed training in and you'll kick ass Missy!) 😁🥰
Great video! Awesome that you showed the initial disappointment in your result and then the process of thinking through it and finding the true positive from the effort and the day!Well done!
My coach had me run a 1500 in college at a dual meet (every other race was 5k or 10k) and I too hated it, coming in last. It just shocked my entire body! So, I empathize with your pain/disgust. I was not John Walker and you aren't Faith Kipyegon - even though we know it - the physical reminder stinks.
It's brilliant to see you put yourself to the test in a distance you don't feel comfortable with. It's really inspiring and points to your dedication to the sport, and stepping out of your comfort zone will only improve your skill!!!!
don't do it. your legs are conditioned for slow switch muscles, doing 1500 requires gast switch muscles. it won't work you will pull muscles because you body is used to the speed. Not worth the rehab if that happens. it happened to me. I rehabed for 1 month. need to train for the faster ran first before you just jump into it.
For a 1500m, even a 10 second improvement is huge significant. That’s about 70 meters faster. Really had to pour out everything for 4 minutes. Had to be 100% both physically and mentally to do it.
