Absolutely. Regardless of one's political colour, it is very difficult to argue anything other than the fact she was a strong leader who had true, deeply-held political conviction. She is a huge inspiration to me.
I had the honor of hearing Lady Thatcher speak at a conference here at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia in the early 2000's. You could hear a pin drop. It was a wonderful speech and an experience I will never forget.
@@arcadian78 I think the mining industry was on It's last legs anyway. Thatcher only slowed down an inevitable decline in this country using casino politics. A short term blip for those who wanted to make money but still a downward trend overall. Its a shame that manufacturing didn't step up in It's place to replace those jobs but the same people who bash Thatcher were quite happy to buy their radios from Taiwan, their TV's from China and their food from the EEC. Her policies were divisive, but can we really say Labour and their strike happy trade unions were any better?
I really do think she was one of our best prime ministers personally .For example she stood up for us internationally. If Mrs thatcher did not lecture the European community and badger them, we would not have the rebate for example. Also, she ruled over her ministers and the opposition with an iron-fist. Since Mrs Thatcher resigned as prime minister, there has not been one single prime minster like her since. She makes me feel proud to be British.
She was easily one of the best prime ministers, people say that her policy's were bad but you have to go through bad times in order to get the good times back.
God bless you, Lady Thatcher I pray your soul and your husbands are resting in peace with our Lord Jesus Christ!! You had more courage than politicians of today, you predicted so many things correctly. For example, you rejected centralized power from Brussels. Praise God that the UK have left, thanks to the efforts of Nigel Farage, whom I feel you would admire. 💕💖
"I reckon I am too old." Well she was still young enough to be back in the office again back in the mid 90s. After all she was still 70 back then; she could have been PM again for another few years.
I like the way Margaret Thatcher answered to the question: "Does this make Labour happy?" Her response implies how amazing she was with Larry King. And I hate to see the fact that she now suffers from dementia--the last disease she should have deserved to have when we consider her hey day as the PM of the UK. Controversial as she remains even now, I like her very much. We need a great leader like her. Despite her current condition, her legend will exist forever.
well said, im a working class lorry driver in Birmingham UK, the disgraceful state this country was in when she took over was unbelievable !! crazy unions, mind numbing inflation, horrific public pay settlements !! i could go on, agter a few years of tory Britian nearly everyone had so much more money in their pockets !! and she didnt take any crap from Europe !!
Whether you liked Thatcher or not, I think what made her stand out is that she stood for something compared to a lot of wishy-washy politicians of today.
Looking at Thatcher's leadership objectively - without any political bias - you have to give her credit for being principled; steadfast; decisive; assertive; and for sticking to her guns. She wasn't a populist leader who flipped-flopped on issues in order to remain popular and keep office. She was a genuine leader.
@sysmoute ha ha you're really funny, do you do stand up? you could if you wanted to, you've got me in fits of laughter, stop it my tummy hurts! ha ha ha ha ha!
@MrXray2011 so what you're saying is it's ok to do these things to the ordinary people of the uk? as thatcher used to say "high unemployment is a small price to pay"
Wow. Margaret Thatcher was one of the best Prime Ministers our country has ever had. She might be unliked, but at the end of the day she did what she said she was going to do - and she was elected three times in a row for that reason. If she wasn't liked then why would she be one of the longest serving PM's the UK has ever had? Like some other comments, Thatcher was the last PM who allowed us to feel proud to be British. 13 years of Socialism has sucked all of our Great Britishness out of us.
she was fearless and if she was priminister today she would have told the eu where to go...........yes she made mistakes..it wasnt made easy for her by her own cabinet ....but she also did good...noone has come close to her since she gone...john major..tony blair..gordon brown ..cameron?....she would eat them all for breakfast...none of them have wat she had...she stuck up for us and i loved her for that
@tdp1909 Was she from Lincolnshire? I've never been there. What is it like? I am interested because I am American but my great-great grandfather was born in LIncolnshire.
tdp1909- her father was an alderman and the lord mayor of grantham, he owned 2 grocery stores at a time when most people in the big northern cities didnt even own a pair of shoes. she went to university in an era when only the rich and privaleged went, and not just any old university either, she went to oxford. by tory party standards of the time she was from a modest background but compared to what most people had to put up with in the 30`s she was from a very affluent background.
@poetsdontknowit The 30s were two tiered from the point of view that heavy industrialised industries suffered massive decline (majority in the north), whereas the less industrialised Midlands and Southern England faired rather well due to the growth in modern manufacturing of electrical goods and a boom in the motor industry, spurred on by a growing affleunt southern middle class.
@MrXray2011 Oh and I have great admiration and respect for your father and many of my relatives who fought in the War! And I corrected myself on the "insiniates" spelling!
Oh i remember when she resigned she went befors the commons for her last question session. I remember the talk about the currency and how she was booed for it. I too have thought back on her currency views. I also find it incrediable that so many people are offended by my earlier statement.
@SkullOfYorick For one thing he left a golden economic legacy to labour- falling unemployment, fastest growing economy in europe, low inflation, a low budget deficit.
i'm more or less a left-wing but what margaret has said in this clip and several others is completely true and what i would've expected from a labour party (as in any left-wing party). Her bold and decisive policies were what made her such a famous (and consequently infamous) figure in politics. alhough she proposed such, dare i say, stupid ideas as the poll tax and budget cuts (my politics aren't that great but bear with me) she was able to accurately predict the consequences that came with it.
@sysmoute actually i was out last night and didn't get in until very late indeed, and let's admit the unemployment figures are steadily rising, won't be long now until we're at 4 million again! back to the 80's, back to the thatcher era lol
@RJY4356 I grew up there in a town called Spalding, now I'm at Uni in Bath....it's a nice enough place, geographically I think it's the largest county in England. There's quite a lot of farming activity and it's very flat. As well as Thatcher, Newton lived in Lincolnshire near Colsterworth and did much of his work at his manor.
me too, i cant say much after what you have written...male 48 Birmngham lorry driver..., obviously working class,...the flippin last government allowed all the foreigners to move here what a disgrace !
@aFemale1 i always get a hard time on these videos because i hate thatcher and the tories, so it's really nice to talk to someone polite for a change lol
Just compare the economic markers of the UK before Thatcher and after Thatcher. She brought the UK from a deep recession, if she hadn't done what she did the UK economy would be even worse today. Do you think an entire industry could be government owned and be productive?
@bloodrunsclear well then we should feel indebted to her for being the primary inspiration behind such a great fictional storyline! Anyone who can woop the Argies asses from 8,000 miles away is worthy of praise in my books.
@MrXray2011 but when thatcher was in the economy may have been running well and inflation was down but look at how the ordinary people were living, i lived through it and it was horrible
@RJY4356 Yea - Grantham to be precise. Have a look at the Wikipedia article under 'Lincolnshire' - apparently John Wesley and Jim Broadbent (the actor who plays Dennis Thatcher in the film) were also from the County. In truth, I live in Northamptonshire and, IMHO, Lincolnshire is fairly flat and is run of the mill as counties go. It can be interesting though - it's like a Northern county in the South as it used to be part of Viking Danelaw...
@aeronuk1 well inflation must be out of hand every time there's a tory government, because every time there's a tory government there's high unemployment!
@saveen3 In your opinion. She grew up in the Great Depression and worked as the daughter of a greengrocer. She may not have been working class, but she understood hardship and poverty - Lincolnshire is hardly Gerrards cross...
@TheChairoplane I've seen the Iron Lady as well, and to me at least, Streep seemed like a risible caricature of Thatcher. The younger version, I mean; she played the Elder Thatcher with dementia quite well.
this woman has been my idol since my childhood. I always wanted to be like her. Unfortunately I have none of her strength and will. I wanted, speaking of personality to be a second margaret thatcher, I'm becoming a second lady Diana, and that makes me mad. I'm so angry with myself.
