Funny how the type of players Sakkari,Halep,Andrescu are its always "They sucked but SW was worse" or "SW lost this match and handed them the win" and never say "SW's primitive game was beaten by a modern all around game" Athletic Heavy shot making from defensive positions favoring accuracy over power> Big Babe Tennis
@@loveforever6226 people grow and age. most athletes aren't who they were when they reach that age. but a win is still a win, even if it's up against a 23-time major winner who's not in her prime. Not the best performance from Maria Sakkari, but Serena Williams did looked stiff and tired.
Anugerah Uga she was literally giving up and aiming outside the lines...when she hit an ace to save match point , she looked so frustrated and was just waiting to go home...no fight whatever...
I have been a serena fan for a long time, and I want her to pass margaret court's 24 majors but if she doesn't I will be okay with it because to me by having the most grand slams in the open era at 23 is just as amazing and who knows if anyone will ever pass her at 23. No one will ever beat father time, no matter how great you are.
She is playing in the era where Australian Open has attained similar status with the other 3 slams in term of prize money. Navratilova commented that some top players during her era regularly skipped the AO back then because the money was so bad.Even Steffi Graf seemingly skipped the AO on a few occasions, notably in 95 and 96 when she won all of the other 6 Grand Slams that she played. Serena singles Grand Slam tally is made up of 7 AO titles.
I think she is waiting for one more title and she is going to retire she's great athlete of all time none of these youngsters will get her titles fair play to Maria she played well
Agree. Her stamina has never been the same as before she had the baby and the medical difficulty at that time. The press should dig into that, but they protect "the Queen."
Is a 24th grand slam to beat another’s record really worth her own health? She really struggled but being the professional she is, she soldiered on til the end. Look after yourself Serena.
As a big fan of Serena, I am very saddened by her defeat. She looked very disappointed and sick in this match. If she continues to play like this, it will be very difficult for her to win the US Open. She will definitely elevate her performance in the US Open as she is more focused on big competitions..
she had all these months to get fit and play practice matches, but she said she didn't play ANYTHING until lexington...her and patrick are too comfortable...they aren't hungry...meanwhile, these other girls are starving and ready to devour serena any chance they get! She cant "play her way" into tournaments like she used to...those days are OVER
Serena had more opportunity to keep fit than anyone during COVID shut down. Not only does she have a tennis court in her backyard but she had Venus living with her, so had a great practice partner.
Suraj Parmekar it should have been over she legit had the match in the palm of her hand and she let it slip away and I guess she just didn’t want to be bothered to play in the 3rd set.😂
@@justicestewart8823 11 hrs in two weeks is really too much. She was already thinking of Konta at 5-3 second set and just didn't see this coming. God this was awful 😭
@@anugerahuga7904 She'll do better with a day off in between matches... Needs to figure how to close matches out really. But then again she's Serena! We'll see❤
The Williams sisters are practically the last two standing from a long gone generation! Besides Clijsters coming back, everyone else that was in their age group has retired! Hingis, Sharapova, Kournikova, Henin, Hantuchova, Jancovic, Dementieva, the list goes on and on!!
Yawl please don’t act like Serena didn’t play amazing in this match! She just couldn’t finish and that’s what’s making me mad! Patrick needs to get it together and push Serena! I’m looking at the coaching staff because they need to add something new to it because I can see shes playing but she’s still not passing that mark!
Serena's defeats become commonplace; apparently, like the sister, she will have to apply for therapeutic exceptions otherwise she will not be able to compete with the young
That point basically changed the whole match 4:16 , she went for it but it was crucial. That whole TB Maria came up clutch and basically that won her the match up
serena should really work on her endurance and mobility ever since aft her comeback it seems she easily lacks fuel as the game progresses, and her service is already not as sharp as compared to her prime years, tho still hoping for another grand slam before she will retire
its true.....what at first seemed to just be normal rust from being away seems to be a chronic problem...the fact that she's been so close to the finish line several times and hasn't done it (often against players she should have beaten) has got to be frustrating for her
@@ardakarabacak1893 a joke? Konta is a top ranked player and has been playing great this tournament. Hadn't even faced a break point till her match with Sakkari
I watched this match until 3-0 in the final set. It was so disheartening to Serena fade away. I'm not sure what happened in the 2nd set. She just completely unraveled. She had her chances to end that match in 2 sets. Credit to Sakkari for not giving up, but Serena just started missing and lost her consistency and her confidence.
Serena looked slow af- and also in pain, I just pray, and hope, she doesn't have Corona, but she's playing like she does, just like Thiem was playing, a few days ago!
Do you know how many MEN do things like that? She has NEVER cheated in her life. She is a mother, she has a daughter and will stand by what's right for her.
Damn, this really feels like an end of an era. Serena managed to overcome racism, injuries, surgeries, personal tragedy, depression, a freaking coma, having a baby, dropping out of the top 100 three times, but I guess this is the one hurdle she won't be able to overcome. It's sad seeing her like this. I really wish she had retired after the 2017 AO after breaking Steffi's record and getting back to #1. Would have been the fairytale ending, sharing her retirement in a final against Venus. Now she'll retire losing in 1st rounds of Slams like Sharapova.
I don’t honestly think so like she had this match won. She just couldn’t close at she knew that. And overall in the third she wasn’t there at all. Like she Just gave up.
Serena can still win: Fire Patrick/ Decide to go all out for two years or until she wins another slam/ Fitness Fitness Fitness/ Cut back on some outside interest and delegate
The Confidant I don’t know why people hate patrick but whatever but yeah I agree she probably used to be able to come out and win slams with very little practice she obviously can’t do that anymore she has to stay fresh. And do some serious reflection heading into the slam which if she’s on top of her game very much well has a chance
The thing that bothers me is that Serena had this match won. And she just couldn’t close it. That the main problem. But Serena honestly needs to fix whatever’s not working. I don’t know what it is but she needs to fix it because she can’t go into us open and be having 3 setters every match.
It called a Patrick!! I believe he just goes through at the motions of being a Diva and Serena coach! She needs new blood these last years! And a coach that is going to say you’re to HEAVY!
she just doesn't seem to have that same will to win that was one of the hallmarks of her greatness....there are a lot of iconic matches that she by all rights probably should have lost but she just refused to be defeated....i don't see that same fire
It's so incredibly sad to see one of the greatest players of all time decline this badly, but I guess nobody can beat time. Everything that made Serena a great player is now long gone. No amount of good serves or shot selection can make up for her non-existent lateral movement. This is turning out to be the worst year of her career and at this point I'm pretty certain her final against Andreescu last year will end up being her last ever Slam final.
The Confidant yeah but she also had the match won. This was mental for her at least I feel she just gave up at the 3rd cause to me in her head she wasn’t there at all
@@justicestewart8823 And I agree! Yesterday had a three setter also and cramping today! Go to the market and pick up two five pounds bags of potatoes in each hand and picture running for a tennis ball! That’s what I tell players I coach who are overweight tennis shape wise. It may be alright in all the gowns she is trying on with her daughter but on that tennis court it’s problematic.
Sakkari needs to come in to the net more. She has the athletic ability and talent. If Sakkari uses more of her all court ability, she has an excellent chance of winning a Grand Slam Singles title; especially, in Australia, followed by US Open, then French and Wimbledon. If Sakkari fully commits to adding serving and volleying a la Navratilova and with her powerful groundstrokes, she should win Wimbledon. And, be more like Hingis and Federer, cut down on unforced errors.
I honestly just commend Serena for even wanting to still play 20+ years later. The stress/anxiety of always being expected to win no matter what is a lot. Federer loses plenty, and it’s well done See ya next time.
All of the players are getting back mentally In the game. Cut them some slack dosent mean their careers are over. The past 5 years she has lost in 8 major finals and won 5 don’t think her career is over. New day comes with new challenges.
Thank you! I thought I was the only that feel like Serena is not totally committed! She needs a new coach for these last years on tour if she really wants to win. Patrick is no longer useful! She fresh blood! Where is Sasha or Richard for her last years!
jack nulty not enough, those young ladies are hitting hard balls because of her, they emulate her,she has to work harder, she is not that young, she seem to be unbalance all the time, she is not hitting her forehand and backhand the way she used to,good day!
Serena is expecting that her opponents are so afraid of her and they will just give the game after the first lost set. Well not today. Her fitness gone in the last set also.
again another match where serena is on serve to close out the match and can't do it. her serve is no longer invincible. if anything, it's as easy to break as anyone else on WTA now.
I'm a huge fan of serena, It suck's seeing her lose. But it is what it is, Sakkari played a great match. I couldn't see serena's crying facial expression right from the middle of second set and In the third she wasn't even interested in playing as if someone is forcing her to play. I hope Old serena will be back at The US OPEN. #GOAT
not a hardcore tennis watcher but I feel that serena needs to change her game up a bit in order to get 1-2 more years of decent play, I think she needs to be more aggressive and come to net as much as possible to shorten the points. She looked real slow compared to maria in the 3rd set, maybe implement the slice and drop shots even more cuz once she gets into a rally she doesn't have the strength to hit the ball deep and fast due to her movement and that's where I noticed maria taking advantage stepping up and just ripping winner after winner especially in the 2nd set
@@xmv1404 No, it's true, she rolled her ankle on her first match point. From the Australian Open website: "But on her first match point in the serve game, with scores at 40-30, Williams rolled her left ankle mid-rally and lost the point. She double faulted on the next point, and then lost the game." ausopen.com/articles/match-report/pliskova-stuns-serena-quarterfinal-upset Williams was ahead 5-1 in the 3rd set, got herself 4 match points, and then lost them all and the match.
She is always hurt when she loses and pulls out of the next tournament. That is why she is 5th on tournament wins. She has 72 and Evert and Navratilova have over 150. Serena has 6 more than Goolagong who played less than 10 years and had a baby. Players use to skip grand slams.
It's going to be a tough ask for Serena to win another major - 7 matches over two weeks against young up and coming players with power to match hers, and better fitness and stamina.
Maria played really well I believe Serena is going to be more than OK at the U.S. Open she just needs to work a little bit harder on her movement and just her attitude. I think she will be refreshed, there’s no excuse to honestly I am not even going to say get to final, theres no excuse for her not to win the title I’m sorry but she has to win.
Decent players on the tour now have a blue print to beat Serena and that has never been the case before. I think Naomi and Bianca really dismantled her game so much that other players were able to learn from it. Serena looks a shadow of herself here and I know some believe she is starting to tarnish her legacy with such performances. Of course the US Open is the scene of many a Serena crime so i wonder whats next? Looking forward to watching things unfold. Nice match in the Q/F Konta vs Sakkari - Konta in 3 for me.
Just like the match with Gauff, Sakkari was not the favourite, or at least, all the talk was about her opponent, but in this matchup, however, she was only two points away from defeat, and apparently, as the commentator said, match point down at one point. I thought at 5-4 30-30, the match was over. Congrats to her, and she may go far pin this tournament and upcoming ones too. I feel Serena just does have the fight or motivation anymore, or maybe she was just feeling tired and exhausted from her last match...
Not a fan of Serena, but still very painful to watch her struggling in the last set. She fought her best, she is the greatest of all time, but yeah, she may never be able to collect her 24th Major title. Her game is just not there anymore, her ground strokes are not penetrating as they used to be, plus lack of movements drags her down.

Lol! Greatest doper of all-time!! Your an idiot. Martina Navratilova is the greatest tennis player in history
Not a great match, both ladies are capable of much better. Understandable though after such a long break. Serena looking very beatable heading into the USO.
