Based on her careful observation, Maria Sibylla Merian systematically illustrated different stages of the insect's development: young brown caterpillar and mature green caterpillar, spun cocoon and glistening pupa, and, hovering above, an adult moth. Merian took special care to describe each element in vivid detail, using vibrant and varied colors of green to capture the individual leaves of the tree as early beginnings of a scientific drawing.

Of all the ways I might've imagined the Baroque playlist ending... you guys got me again, lol. "...raising children and raising insects..." What's the difference, really? lol. This is very interesting. I used to love seeing creepy crawlies in nature docs, so I appreciated the video of them squirming around. 🙊 I'm into the idea of natural theology, but I would be. This playlist was worth the wait. As always, there was much to learn and be awed by. I look forward to seeing what lies ahead. ❤

Maria Sibylla Merian (2 April 1647 - 13 January 1717[1]) was a German entomologist, naturalist and scientific illustrator. She was one of the earliest European naturalists to document observations about insects directly. Merian was a descendant of the Frankfurt branch of the Swiss Merian family. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Sibylla_Merian

4:28 if metamorphosis in a Christian world can be associated with the resurrection, what thoughts did Ovid have about metamorphosis when he spent so much time and effort on just that? There was no Christianity or anything? Else, it is fantastic to see all these artists with their sharp eyes and dedication spending so much time and effort, creating artwork we can enjoy hundreds of years later, something to think about sometimes

I much prefer the interconnectedness of things to the internet of things. And she was a very skillful artist. Thanks for sharing.
