Did you know that the province of Newfoundland is a whopping 6-hour ferry ride from the mainland of Canada? We've taken the Marine Atlantic Ferry many times from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland and back but this as the first time we booked ourselves a private room and created a video to show you what this ferry is all about. Enjoy!

Over the past 10 years, we have travelled to 42 countries spanning six continents, which has given us the expertise to plan amazing trips and find memorable experiences.
In 2017, we decided to explore our own massive backyard with Road to 150, a 150-day #roadtrip across #Canada, witnessing the beauty and diversity of this country and sharing our experiences through video, pictures, social media, and articles. Great video! My fav part “are you going to miss Newfoundland?” “I always miss Newfoundland “. Spoken like a true Newfoundlander! There’s something special about this place and while I’ve travelled the world, there’s no place like the one I call home! The director of the movie “The Shipping News” once said something like- in a place of high unemployment, high cost of living and other challenges - the rest of Canada may sometimes laugh at the newfies but the newfies are laughing back much louder. Sounds about right! Thank you for showing the beauty and respect our province deserves.

Many years ago, I flew with a pilot-friend in his small plane from San Francisco, to St. John's, Newfoundland. Among the most stunning visuals during that trip occurred on the leg from Charlottetown, where we re-fueled, to St. Johns. The island of Newfoundland is astonishing in forest density. Potential emergency landing spots are not visible from the air. Gander checks in with general aviation every 20 minutes, or so, to be sure that all is well. You mentioned the coastal fog ... being from San Francisco, I know it well . All along the southern coast of this gorgeous island were wisps of white fog, lapping up over the deep green trees. Beautiful! I love being on the water. Maybe someday I'll be able to enjoy that ferry ride. Hopefully, after Covid.

Well, some pro-tips for the fairy to help with the experience: Get outside as soon as you can when the boat is starting to leave. If you can (especially spring to fall) while its still in Sydney harbor (when you have land on both sides) keep an eye on the water as you're going to see otters, sometimes seals and other aquatic wildlife that like to chase the boat. Likewise, especially during the summer, when the boat is getting near the tip of Cape Breton (the land on the western side of the boat) you will usually see pods of dolphins chasing the boat and have a high chance of seeing whales near by. Just scan the horizon for their spouts and when you spot one, keep watching that area. The berths are small and feature-less because frankly, they're rarely used. Were it not for covid, there's more than enough stuff to do on the boat to fill 8 hours. I'm not 100% sure about the new boats, but I know the old ones usually had live music at the bar area. The larger boat has a few other things too, like a spa. They're not like the carnival cruises but not bad for what essentially serves as a short run ferry. The berths are basically just for storing stuff. At least on the port aux basque run. If you take the longer run, which goes all the way to saint johns, you're going to want the berths for sleeping as that run is considerably longer.

This reminds me of a trip we took on the Scotia Prince ferry from Portland, Maine to Yarmouth Nova Scotia. It was a driving vacation, and the Scotia prince company booked all our hotels all the way around Nova Scotia from Yarmouth to Cape Breton, and back. One of the best vacations I ever took. Sadly, the Scotia prince is no longer in operation. If this trip is as good as that, I urge all to take it.

Did that trip a few years ago,with the our trailer. we did trip from Ontario, to NFL, took the ferry paid for reserved seats upstairs also a cabin. Did day trip going and night trip coming back. Went to see Gros morne, the kids will never forget it and asked to do it again. Amazing Journey

I go over every year from Nova Scotia to Moose Hunt. Been doing it for over a decade.I enjoy the trip, get a Cabin each trip. Marine Atlantic offers great service. A plus, Newfoundland is one of the most beautiful places i have ever been.

We just did the whole drive across Canada this summer from Yukon to Newfoundland and back over a six week honeymoon. The ferry was a highlight both ways and your videos are a nice reminder of our travels!!!!

Just took Argentia ferry last week due to the road emergency at Port Aux Basque. I also had taken it on the scheduled last trip in September. Certainly a long driving trip but great service and a great experience. I took a sleeper on the Argentia on the second trip last week. 17 hour on the Argentia. Have done the Port Aux Basque as well.

I rode my Harley from BC to St. Johns, picked up the wife in Halifax and took this ferry over to the Island and the long one back, bedroom both times, was a great trip. We had a bedroom right at the bow with a window, great trip, loved Newfoundland.

Excellent vidéo! Brings back memories of our trip in 2018. Viewers should note that there can be delays in rough weather. We booked our passage months in advance an there were windy conditions for days before we were to go thus cancelling all passages . Our Monday morning trip was the first trip in days and it was packed!

I've been on the Marine Atlantic ferries often through my life and the last time was about 4 years ago. They've made some significant upgrades since the last time I was on one of them! I've never had a tv in my cabins and they didn't have free wifi. The last time I was in PAB the ferry was delayed and it was a 13 hour wait on probably the hottest day the area has ever seen, it was 31°C. I'm planning a trip on the ferry for the summer and I'm excited to see how they are now!

@@evelynclements8649 We do have two videos coming, but they are about two hikes in Gros Morne. The rest of the trip was visiting family, but we do have other Newfoundland videos from previous years, including St.John's, the Viking Trail, and a small community my dad grew up in called Deer Harbour

All of your Canada videos make me want to revisit all of these places. We flew to NFLD from Toronto for our last trip but I have to say that part of me missed the "getting there". Something about driving from Toronto through Quebec, NB, Nova Scotia and on to Cape Breton to the ferry is all part of the adventure. We don't book accommodation for the Port Aux Basques ferry but did for the Looooong trip to Argentia. We had booked a room but the reservation was messed up and they ended up putting us well below deck in the crew area! All part of the Adventure too!

haha oh wow. Yeah, it can be an adventure, but if you don't have time to stop, flying is the way to go. My mom and dad used to the 7 day drive from AB. And then in 2013, we went again but I spread it out over three weeks and they had a much better time lol

visited NF in Sept 2016 was memorable and the ferry was amazing took it at night so once arrived at PortauxBasque we got to see the sunrise... Rocky Harbour stay to Gros Morne hike to Road Trip to St-Johns, truly amazing, definitively need to re-visite that province again real soon

I've done the overnight trips multiple times, those chairs are actually very comfortable to sleep in, lol I've also seen multiple people curl up under their chair and sleep on the floor.

Obviously, the trip is much nicer when all the amenities are available. We had a trip on the Atlantic Vision from Argentia to North Sydney ( an 18 hour steam) pre covid and the food was fantastic! The restaurant was buffet style and lots of dinner or breakfast items to choose from. There was even a live band in the bar!

@@MustDoCanada In the summer of 1977, a friend and I took a cabin on a coastal boat that went from Argentia to Port Aux Basques. Great trip for $54 Canadian for the both of us. . We even stopped in St Pierre. My friend and I got out and stretched our legs and came back on board. The Newfoundland crew was super nice to us ! All kinds of tourists went from Fortune to St Pierre, but not too many took the coastal boat from Argentia to Port aux Basques.

I live 10 minutes from the north sydney terminal. I traveled on the ferry once, I was sick the entire time lol about 9 years. Over and back. I never went back across 🤣 I will go again with gravol... lol as NFLD Is absolutely gorgeous !

My mother’s family has a long history with PAB. My mother grew up as a child and young teen there as her father worked as an engineer on the SS Caribou until it was was sunk by torpedo by a U-boat in 1942. As a child/teen I’ve made 11 crossings visiting relatives. Our family of 5 crammed into a a 4-berth cabin for overnight crossings..!! I haven’t been back to NL in decades but it is still a part of my blood. Thanks for showing the updates amenities!! 🙂

haha yeah I bet the ferry has come a long way. My first one was the MV Caribou. That's crazy that it was sunk. People often say "the world has gone mad" but in reality, it's better now than it was before

@@MustDoCanada I traveled on the MV Carson which also sunk. Thankfully I was not on it when it went down. It was crushed in the winter by the ice. Thankfully everyone was able to get off safely!!)

The MV Caribou was my favorite ferry in all of Canada still to this day.. She was Canadian built and she had character and one solid boat.. unlike the European made cookie cutters that are widely used today in most ferry fleets. The MV Caribou was named the Caribou in honour of the SS Caribou that went down not far from PAB due to a U-Boat torpedo during WW2

Hat Frey. It ended up being approx 12 hrs because an engine failed and we had only half power. There was 4 of us travelling on motorcycles so we were fortunate to have a room with 2 beds and we took turns getting some rest

I just spotted your video! I was born in Ontario and have lived here all my life. My husband, however, was born in Springhill, NS. I have been to the East Coast 5 times altogether. One of the times we went down there I drove an RV and we took the ferry from NS to PEI so I know the routine with vehicles!! Did you notice my married name? BAILEY lol. Enjoyed your tour of both ferries and would love to take the ferry from North Sydney to Newfoundland! It is now on my bucket list!!

I'm glad you made this video is a great starting point for most travellers. I feel that you missed a few of the finer points like the Cape Ray sunsets and sunrises their amazing and it's not a far drive from PAB.. but all and all good content a little simple for us avid travellers but it was Covid what can you do eh?

Lived in Newfoundland all of my life.. took many of trips via plane, never was on the ferry. Always led to believe that the Ferry is a pain in the butt. Especially in the winter with bad weather. Recently Port-Aux-Basques and area had 200mm+ of rain a couple of weeks ago and the highway literally washed out in a few spots, preventing any ferry travels to there. They opened up the Argentia port for emergency purposes, but that one takes 16 hours from North Sydney to Argentia.

The ferry is not always a pain in the butt, especially when you say you've never been on it. Been using Marine Atlantic since 1991, a lot more positive experiences than negative.

I remember leaving NL in 1977 between Christmas and New Year's. I was told I could have a berth for the night! I wasn't expecting that, but loved it. Then, an Ontario trucker's wife came on board. She was having none of being forced to sleep in a berth next to "strangers" (that was me and another trucker's wife! The CN Marine crew got her and her husband their own cabin somehow. @@MustDoCanada It's a movie documentary about how all air traffic was grounded just after 9/11. International flights coming into the US were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland. They had 38 planes and almost 7,000 people land at that tiny airport. It just shows how amazing the people of Gander were and how they treated the stranded passengers during the week or so after 9/11. It's a really beautiful documentary.

I really enjoyed this video, it brought back a lot of happy memories of when we travelled with my 2 boys. We had a Coleman trailer so we camped in each province from Ontario to Nova Scotia before catching the ferry to NFLD....I think the most memorable part for the boys was the ferry, they loved that they got to play in the arcade and watch movies, both about 7 and 11 at the time, almost 25 yrs ago. My youngest was only a few days ago reminiscing about the ferry and how much he enjoyed it. :) I should mention, I'm originally from NFLD ( Bell Island ) and this was my families first trip to NFLD so it was extra special.

It is definitely worth driving across Newfoundland. I, also, am a Bell Islander. On one trip a huge bull moose was at the top of a hill beside the highway. He was enormous!🌲 My hands started sweating and all that was on my mind was "please God, let him stay up there.🙏 I can't wait till summer 22 to drive it again. Google loves when we post pictures. haha was it surprising to see it without fog? Yeah, WiFi is nice, however, it's quite slow. Surprisingly, I had phone service for most of the trip.

Hello I believe a ferry trip u should take is from Port Hardy B.C. to Prince Ruper B.C. and then the ferry from Prince Rupert B.C. to Haida Gwaii B.C

If you are ever in Manitoba try Clearwater Provincial Park north of The Pas. It is the clearest blue water lake in the world. The waters so clear you can see 30 feet down no problem. Also there are sand beaches and camp grounds and lodges in the park.

The Pas also hosts The Pas Tappers festival in February which highlights the skills needed to survive up here in the old days including king and queen trapper competitions. The big draw is the dog sled races, one of the oldest , if not THE oldest in Canada. The museum here is really neat as well with lots of interesting stuff.

Those Marine Atlantic ferries look much nicer than the BC Ferries we have over here, but that makes sense considering how much longer you're on the Marine Atlantic ferry. I haven't been on the ferry to Prince Rupert; it's a longer route but from what I've heard and photos I've seen, it's not as nice as Marine Atlantic. Has Karla done the Newfoundland Screech-in Ceremony?

I always laugh when people point out the bar. The ferry often hits a few “bumps in the road” on the trip across the pond and newbies quickly figure out that alcohol and motion sickness don’t mix.

We have always taken the night ferry on our migration back each summer. You should have driven across the province and taken the short ferry to Labrador and driven through Labrador and Quebec.

The road from Blanc Sablon up to Happy Valley-Goose Bay is almost all paved now (approximately 30 km of gravel left as of October) and for the most part its very good road. Long drive though!

I did the trip this spring, the gravel section isn't bad at all, it's all capped with class A and ready for paving. I keep saying the gravel on the trans Labrador is better than most of the pavement on the island. If you ever do that drive you will understand why Labrador had a spruce twig on its flag.

They used to have board games you could get at the desk. You really dont need rooms on the port aux basques trip its only 6 hours. The Argentia one is 16 hours so you might want sleep then. They are expensive though. These ferries are much nicer than the old boats. I am in St. John's Newfoundland but im from Ontario originally.

I've been on 3 N Sydney to Port Aux Basque ferries , the Leif Erikson William Carson and the Ambrose Shea in the 60's and 70's. Two of these mighty ships sank. Happy to be here. ✌️
