There's a lot more evidence of Lucas planning the prequels this early on. - Lucas is interviewed on the set of Empire about it in Alan Arnold's making of journal called Once Upon a Galaxy. - This made it into the liner notes of the Empire soundtrack album. - Which verifies the Episode V number in the crawl. Meaning if the original movie was IV then there must be 3 earlier movies coming. - It goes all the way back publicly to a Rolling Stone interview in 1977 called "The Wizard of Star Wars" where he pontificates on maybe doing a sequel about young Ben and Vader. - Earlier than even that JW Rinzler's 2007 book The Making of Star Wars excerpts transcripts of a December 29, 1975 conversation where Lucas tells Alan Dean Foster that one day he'd like to do the backstory of how the Emperor takes over. - The broad outline of that is in the prologue of the novelization ghost written by Foster.

I saw" Star Wars" in the theater soon after the movie was first released. I remember and it has been confirmed elsewhere that the opening "crawl" as you call it, was different, longer (more details). I was young, certainly I didn't write it down but it was different than what is on the DVD and even on VHS (which I own) and I remember well, that it was many years after the release of "Star Wars" that the movie was finally for sale first on VHS only, of course. Han Solo NEVER spoke with Jabba the Hut in "Star Wars" (not in theaters, not on VHS - Only on the DVD release). So : changes were made, in other words. I'm commenting elsewhere as well but I will not engage in a long debate about it all, I simply don't care enough, I'm just offering witness to the truth. The ending of "Saving Private Ryan" was changed as well but I will never like that piece of crap.
