Been listening to ML for nearly 35 years and I still love seeing reactions like yours and others when finding out about him. I still get goosebumps listening to ML every time I hear his voice. His music has got me through quite a few tough times but also makes me just sit back and smile. You want something to get you on your feet, try Ode To Sad Disco on the Blues Funeral album. A voice and sound for every occasion. The greatest, end of!
The five solo records he released in the 90's are all classics. They have such an intimate, unique sound. Like some hybrid of folk, blues and rock. There has never been anything like those records. They are all just so brilliant.
Prepare to spend a few years going through Marks catalogue. The man was nothing if not prolific. Since his passing I've gotten into more of his collaborations and I can't believe I've deprived myself up until now. The Gutter Twins and The Soulsavers Albums are my stand outs so far.
you can't go wrong with "Whiskey For The Ghost" album ,you should read his poems... Leaving California (2021) Devil in a Coma (2021) I am the wolf lyrics and writings (2017) Plague Poems(2020) Year Zero-A World With No Flowers(2022)
Thanks for this recommendation and reaction! This is the first time I've heard this track and I've been playing it on repeat. P.S. I'm also listening to his book. Very interesting guy and worth the listen.
The big difference between Mark's solo work and the Trees is that the Screaming Trees were never his band, he was just the vocalist. The Conner brothers were the leaders of that band and Lanegan had a limited input in the creative process.
I think what you’re referring to with Mark Lanegan - he’s able to truly express himself and hit the truth frequency. And share it with the world thru his writing; songs and expression. He’s not playing at being an artists he is just being.
