Sounded like he was a little jealous of Burt Reynolds here, who was one of the most popular stars at that time. Reynolds has said he was a fan of Brando and approached him at a party to say how much he appreciated his work and that he was a fan, only to be brushed off by Brando. As far as I can tell, sounded like Brando had a chip on his shoulders from the get-go.

"He worships at the temple of his own narcissism." Projection of guilt from Brando, much? Marlon was super talented, but he was lazy and often difficult on purpose. He took millions from Coppola to play Kurtz on Apocalypse Now and then never read any of the material. You can even hear Coppola trying to cut short the idle chatter here and want to get back to work. I think Brando had a grudge against Reynolds because Burt actually lampooned Brando in an episode of The Twilight Zone.

Don’t forget his wounded “white saviour ” pride over native Americans, refusing his oscar using a “pet” Indian and then seeing Reynolds in “the man who loved cat dancing”, using a Native American child to promote the movie must have stuck right in his throat - underneath it all Brando was using native Americans for his own purposes in the same way that Reynold’s film was and he didn’t want to think that he was part of that same system of “acting” which he so contemptuously in denial of. To see a younger actor such as Reynolds who looked more like Brando than Brando, yet still had his looks through youth and doing things like that, must have been hard for his enormous ego to handle.

@@georgemorley1029 You are oblivious. Marlon didnt use the first nations speaker to make himself look good, because he knew it would do the opposoite and didnt care, as such he planned to reject his oscar and knew hollywoods systemic view on first nations people, as he cared about the issue. This point proven when the audience started boooing at the lady and didnt give a shit or wanted to hear what she had to say, even if it was on the behalf of Marlon, whom hollywood already admired. The point of Brandos move was to shed light on the mistreatment and generalized misrepresentation of first nations people in hollywood, that was all. On the largest stage of hollywood, the oscars, he had the chance and took it to do so. To call the person a "pet" who as an adult, was asked and who agreed to represent herself and her peoples and their experiences in society, and the issue at hand is just down right sensless. She was'nt forced to go on stage. You think that little boy enjoyed and wanted to leave his place of living and his mother, just so he can go onto a movie set to be fakely hugged and played by a complete stranger, for the strangers benefit of self promotion? "hey im a good guy, I hugged a first nations child" . You think thats the same purposefulness to make your self look better or to build your ego, or to use it as a self image tool? Equating these two uses , with complete differences in thier context and reasons is utterly stupid. Your thinking is so out of feild and archeiac that the first thing you thought was a battle of the egos, and speculated instead of stopping for a second to critically think about the fundamental reason why Brando did such a thing. If your saying that move at the oscars was for his own promotion and benefits, how did it benefit him for his public image and ego? You are a complete dip shit.

And I don't even think Reynolds's impression of Brando was a lampoon. I think he did it out of respect and admiration. But it also happened to launch his career, so Brando probably thinks Burt owes him royalties for that performance. Or he's pissed off that anyone would "steal" Stanley Kowalski from him.

I doubt Brando was so petty that he held a grudge from a sketch from years ago. Seemed to me that he hated fakes. He had faults himself and had admitted this in his biography. I'd say he might have misjudged Burt a bit though.

Brando hated fake people. He hated scripted dialogue, he hated Hollywood, he hated falseness. You can see this throughout the last half of his career, as he pissed around on set, was paid incredible sums of money for very little screentime, gained a tremendous amount of weight, rarely appeared in interviews to promote his films, and never talked about himself, always diverting the conversation onto somebody else or an idea. He always downplayed acting in every interview I've watched and too right he should have. He saw it for what it was, and that is glorified and worthless. He always said that everybody can act and that films are not art, they are simply a means of making money. A very thoughtful, and self-aware man at that.

@@The_Joker_ Whether Reynolds was a better actor than Brando, I'm sure most would disagree w/you. In his defense, Reynolds wasn't given many plum roles (& he turned down too many that were!). Therefore, his true talent was largely unproven for most of his career. But the talent was absolutely there, as an actor & director. In his frustration w/this fact, he admits he sold out his talent for easy parts (basically playing himself) for t/loads of money he earned in them. But Brando's "bizaare" obsession w/Reynolds, a person he didn't know or socialize w/at all, was 100% irrational & definately NOT sane. You are absolutely correct!

Cold Winter As per usual the majority would only see Brando as a world class actor simply because of the publicity that Hollywood are so good at. At least Reynolds could memorise a script. The better actor by far was Reynolds. Slowly over the years the truth behind Brando has come out, how he attempted to destroy Reynolds because he was a younger better looking and more talented actor. It got so bad that Brando had Reynolds shunned because of his Native American heritage. Brando was the guy who would only accept cash for his rolls and of course acquired many political friends. It’s sad that Reynolds was a class A actor but had no choice but to accept rolls that were B actor titles. Actors like Clint Eastwood had to do a very similar thing because he was not in the elite circles that exist in Hollywood. Sad that real actors are pushed aside so bad actors can get their way.

@@The_Joker_ You'll get no arguments from me regarding Brando...he was extremely self absorbed & a class A jerk to a lot of people. Reynolds was just the opposite...while he could be hot headed at times, he was extremely generous & kind to most everyone in t/business. T/industry should've given Reynolds better opps. He proved himself well later in his career in t/fantastic TV series Evening Shade & again of course in Boogie Nights. Why more A list films/TV didn't come to him after that is a mystery. He obviously had much more in t/tank. His poor financial situation, due to t/Loni nightmare, forced him to accept whatever work he could get. Very Sad. I don't think Clint stayed on B list for long. There's so many of those 'thespian' actors in Hollywood. Sean Penn, Sean Connery, Alec Baldwin, David Harbour....They're all so self important and pompous. They actually think that being an actor is up there with being a brain surgeon or a paramedic. Listening to them stroke their own egos when they give speeches where they talk about how important acting and movies are, how they change the world and how, as actors, they are shepherds leading the rest of us to a brighter future....the sheer arrogance of thinking that they're so much higher than us 'ordinary folk' that they have a responsibility to lead us. It's sickening. Most of them are all extreme Socialists and when they talk about guiding society 'forward' what they mean is 'towards Socialism', they just don't have the balls to come right out and say it. I love actors like Brando who just see acting for what it is: a job.

This is a total joke. Brando was a HUGE narcissist! His very weird obsession w/Burt defies logic. Burt was introduced to Brando once (when he was new in Hollywood) & he wouldn't even shake Burt's hand. Also Brando's story about Burt on t/Cat Dancing set is total BS. Burt was 1/4 Cherokee & played several Indian parts. He was a huge advocate for t/American Indian & would never do or say anything to offend t/heritage...or to offend any child. Burt loved kids & always wanted a big family of his own. Brando admits he didn't know Burt, but he knew Burt knew a lot of him. Burt was very close friends w/Rita Moreno, who had a long affair w/ Brando, whom Brando abused. He orig hated that some "new kid", who looked like him at t/time, might steel a bit of his thunder. Burt was well received & well liked by his peers. He was known as a fun-loving guy who didn't take himself too seriously. Burt was an extremely generous person & an amazing friend to those who were closest to him. Everything Brando hated. Everything Brando was not. While Brando was certainly a more acclaimed actor, he was an asshole and a strange human being, who I doubt had any real friends. He had deep emotional issues & his weird obsession w/Burt was just a symptom of that. Would Burt have liked to have been more respected as a serious actor, I'm sure yes. But I think Burt was just fine being Burt...not Brando.

Apparently the story is when Burt came onto the scene he was viewed as a younger up and coming Brando type and wanted to meet Brando and become friends with him. They eventually met at some club and Brando basically shunned him and was rude towards him. I don't know the rest of the story but word definitely got around that Brando was not the friendliest guy to people he didn't like and was often problematic on movie sets. Burt at one point looked up to him as many younger actors did but Brando wasn't willing to be friendly towards him. Maybe that impression Burt did of Brando played a part in him not liking Burt but it likely goes deeper than that. He definitely held some strange grudge against Burt who by nearly all accounts was said to have been a nice guy. It's pretty hypocritical of Brando to be critical of others when he had many issues himself.
